My first service included $2k in work, to include the carburetor cleaning/re-jetting/tuning. I was happy. Awhile later, pipes seemed to glow red after 10min of idling. This was even at 39 degrees outside. I called Chris and he said to bring it in so he could "turn down the idle" I then also had them perform new sprockets/chain. After awhile the adjustments Cycletune made, seemed too low and the bike was dying. I called and was told that I could stop by at 4pm. I was hoping to quickly discuss my issues and possibly get on their schedule. I was even interested in more services from them. (Services and accessories Chris and I previously discussed) He comes to look at my bike outside, and seems immediately irritated. He literally told me a lot of the work I should do myself, said he doesn't have time for customization because it's the summer. Then he literally raised his palm to me, interrupted me mid-conversation, and said he needed to cut me off because he was too busy. Wow. He made me feel terrible. 10 mins pass, and I walk into the shop to apologize if I came across a certain way, and to tell him I was hurt by how he treated me. Chris got very angry in front of all the staff, and said things like "if you're going to ride a carbureted bike, read the manual" and accused me of trying to cut in front of line of other customers? He literally said "you have the audacity to walk back into my shop and waste more of my time" I was very confused and hurt. Have a conversation with this guy and you can feel the negative energy he projects outward. I may have caught him on a bad day, but looking at these reviews, this guy is a loose cannon. Looking back on past reviews, this should be no surprise. The shop does good mechanical work, mostly. But their communication and customer service is terrible. I've repeatedly given them a chance and it just doesn't get any better. As stated in an earlier review, Chris is friendly only if you like their work and don't have any complaints. Don't try asking these folks to do right by their customers if you're unhappy about something. In fairness, the mechanical work they do is generally pretty good. They botched a repair for me, but did cover fixing it under warranty: something Chris was very unhappy about and called to berate me about, pointing fingers at reasons the bad work must have been my fault. That's actually not my gripe (my bike sat for months before I noticed it was botched, so I get it. Still bad service to do that with customers, especially when I hadn't asked for it to be done under warranty--that was the service desk's call--but whatever). My gripe is that on several occasions I've wasted trips down to the shop. The last straw was coming down to the shop from Seattle (I had to do that because they missed the original delivery estimate that was over 2 weeks out and I was leaving town--a deadline they knew was a problem for me) to pick up the bike I'd confirmed I'd pick up that day. When I got there, the shop was closed. During normal business hours, at 4pm. No notice. No one returned calls. Or apparently checked messages. Nothing. And no remorse either. Just eat a load of crap and be happy about it, dear customer. I'm not some rando one time customer either. I'd come in on a few occasions. I kept overlooking the communication issues because it was otherwise good work for the most part. Apparently in all these years, Chris still hasn't learned the value of customer service or caring about making things right when they screw up. Read the bad reviews. Yup. That might happen to you too. They do good mechanical work. But if you care about your time, you value professional relationships, or you want a shop you can trust, move on and keep looking. I needed new tires I had bought online mounted, and called to see whether they could do it that same day. I also asked whether they would mind showing me the balancing, as I'd had problems with another shop's balancing and that shop would not let me see their work. Aaron said they could do the tires that day, and had no problem showing me the balance once done. I took the wheels and tires in, it was done in under an hour, and he showed me the balancing, putting my mind at ease. That's great customer service in my book, and I appreciate it. Chris does great work. I would trust this shop with any kind of work. And they always seem to complete the work before the date they predict when I drop the bike off. Also, when I ask for an estimate for specific work, they provide one in a price range. No problem. I don't need a precise amount; a range is fine. However, my one complaint is that, on several occasions over 4-5 years, the final price of the work is higher than the high end of the estimate. Not by a lot; just enough for me to feel like I shouldn't bother them about the overrun. But the last time, I sensed that this was a pattern and that Cycletune may be taking advantage of me. This was a specific service that dealers also do, and I had called Pro Caliber and Lanphere to get their price on the same work. Both were precise quotes (not estimated ranges) and both were lower than the high end of Cycletune's range. I'd rather give my biz to a small shop, so I still did the work with Cycletune. When they sent the final invoice, I decided to ask about the price overrun, and they explained that one task in the work, a task that they specifically mentioned in their initial estimate, took longer than they anticipated. My issue, and the reason I don't give them 5 stars, is that I don't think a customer (especially a repeat customer) should bear the costs of the extra time above the high end of their estimate. Importantly, nothing about the final work was outside the scope of the estimate. I realize the customer should pay for work outside the initial estimate, and Cycletune is very good about contacting me in advance to get authorization when they think there is work outside the scope of the initial estimate. In short, I feel really good about the work (which matters most to me), but not the place, and I don't know of a good alternative in Portland, so I still work with Cycletune when I cannot find another resource. read more

Took my motorcycle in after having seen a beautiful weekend calling me as the winter weather was releasing it's hold. I checked out their website first and decided to treat my bike to the level 2 service because I am not as hands on with my bike as I would like. The guys running it were very nice and asked me a few questions about the bike and let me ask my beginner questions without any complaints. Turned my bike over to them and got my quote for service. They email you the quote so you don't need to come back in to have to just say yes. Got my bike back now and it runs like a dream. I will be coming back to this place if I decide to take my bike to track days. Highly recommended. read more

I have a mixed review on these guys. The first time I called them I talked to Chris, the owner. He was great. I needed some simple work done on my Honda CFR250L. He literally squeezed me in the next day and showed me how I could do some of the work myself. Great! So, now i thought i would give them some repeat business and get new tires, chain, sprockets with them. I called to make an appointment. Did not get Chris but got some surly guy instead. Pretty rude and short. Said I could not make an appointment without them seeing the bike first - even though they had already worked on it. Said it would take them 2 weeks to 10 days to get the tires I wanted - nothing special - D606s. Made it clear that they just didn't really want my business. I called another local shop and they can get the tires in 2 days and glad to have my business. Very mixed message from these guys. Too bad. I was hoping I had found my new shop..... read more

This outfit had quite a few bad reviews which seem to have "mysteriously" disappeared. And now there are all of these new, glowing reviews.... suspicious.. These guys are off-the-scale rude as well as incompetent. I was told that I could not have a particular tire (ME880) installed on my bike because Metzeler does not make one in my bike's size. When I informed them that Metzeler's application spec and support guys said differently and that I was currently running that same exact size on my bike right now, I was told: "I am not interested in mounting the Wrong tire on a large bike that needs a large tire. No debate here." Do whatever makes you happy but I wouldn't trust these guys to fix a broken shoelace, much less work on my motorcycle. I've visited CycleTune multiple times with two different bikes and have had nothing other than stellar experiences. The first experience was with a 1980 Honda CB750 which CycleTune resurrected from the dead for me. From the get-go, Chris and Rob explained thoroughly what needed to be done immediately and what could wait. The bike was completed on-time and on budget and is still running strong. Most recently, I took them my new bike, a 2002 BMW for which I had no previous maintenance records. I had taken the bike to the dealer for some diagnostic work a couple weeks ago (because of proprietary computer programs) and not only did they miss some critical safety issues, they charged me for 5+ hours shop time at $100+ per hour. I then took the bike to CycleTune to have the remaining 24k service done (at a much more reasonable shop rate). Chris went over the bike thoroughly and pointed out what needed to be done immediately and what could wait a few months. When he was thrown a curve due to a non-maintained brake caliper, he worked with me to find a used caliper rather than having to buy a new part, saving me almost $500. Furthermore, he and Rob found a resourceful way to install it eliminating the need to return to the dealer for another $500+ bleed repair. I can't say enough good things about CycleTune. There main goal is rider safety and not once have I felt I was being sold a bill of goods. In reading the two negative reviews at the bottom, I believe the people have the shop confused with other shops because its not in Chris' or Rob's bones to treat people that way. I ended up getting the "Level 3" service as it would've been due soon anyway. The price was reasonable, the service was done quickly, and the explanation of services and recommendations for the future were beyond anything I've ever received at any car or bike shop. Brought in my Sv650 k3 for a level 3 tune up. These guys had good service and know how to work on bikes for sure. They let you know what is being done and how much that specific service is going to cost. So I felt comfortable knowing what I was paying for. They're a little busy, but its that time of the year again. So, what can you expect. Everywhere is gonna be busy. Prices are pretty good. So, at least check these guys out if you need a tune up before you decide on where to go. You might be able to find better prices for services, but they probably wont be done as well as these guys. I dropped my bike off 2 weeks ago to have heated grips installed. I was told they couldn't start on it that day, but they would get to it soon. I made just 1 request: don't power the heated grips off the accessory connector. I explained that I've read a lot of horror stories online about people regretting that mistake, because it's just not made for that kind of load. A week later they emailed me a price estimate that matched the price they quoted over the phone and the price they told me when I dropped the bike off. I emailed back to ask if the bike was done; they said they'd be starting on it the following week. This had me pretty annoyed; why did they ask me to drop it off a week ago if they still can't start on it? But I gave them the benefit of the doubt. They're bad at scheduling, but hey, they'll probably do good work, right? So this week they call me to say the bike's done. I come in to pick it up. They're going to need to charge me quite a bit more than they quoted because it took extra time. I'm a little annoyed that they didn't call me to OK the extra charge, but whatever, at least i get my bike back. Then i asked if they had problems finding power for the heated grips. No, they told me they had no problems with it, because they just used the accessory connector. The one I asked you guys not to use? Yes, that one. I reiterated what I had said when I brought the bike in; I didn't want the heated grips on that connector because it wasn't rated for that kind of power. They told me I was wrong and treated me like I'm an idiot and don't understand electricity. I'm an electrical engineer. I design electronics systems for a living. That connector is not meant to power heated grips. But who cares; even if it was, they specifically did what I asked them not to do. That makes them jerkfaces. Not only that, but they charged me extra for doing exactly what I asked them not to do. That makes them huge jerkfaces. And it makes me feel like a chump. I will never go back to Cycletune. I will highly discourage anyone I meet who has a motorcycle from going to Cycletune. Please, don't go to Cycletune. They're jerkfaces. read more

Odd, last time I checked, before July 2011, there were about 6 reviews for this place on Yelp, all not so good as the one posted previous to mine. Here is my bad experience. I showed up at the shop for what I perceived to be a tune up on my bike. After waiting around the lobby for 5 minutes for no apparent reason while the owner shined some guys tires, he came over to casually peruse my bike. He immediately identified 5 things my bike needed as well as a new chain. Wow either he has x-ray vision or I'm gonna get screwed- guess which. Anyway he said he can give me an emailed estimate, and as I was already there, I said why not- Bad move. Later the next day I get an estimate for a bunch of stuff besides the tune up, that I'm fairly certain I don't need,. No thanks. I go back to the shop the next day to pickup my bike, and after again waiting in the lobby for no apparent reason, other than to establish social dominance by making me wait, the owner comes over to help me. I tell him no thanks on the repairs just give me my bike. He informs me the same verbal estimation he ends up writing down that night and emailing me, with no additions to what he told me within 2 minutes of looking at the bike in his shop is like $105. No thanks, I told him that's unreasonable, he ended up lowering it to half of the previous amount which was still way too much but I didn't want to argue and I was getting mad as I already didn't like this guy. I ended up taking my bike somewhere else and the shop there told me the chain was fine and the other half of the non-tune up related stuff was unnecessary. I'm sure this guy is technically competent but make sure you watch what you're paying and be clear how much the estimate is going to be before you get stuck like me. read more

Awful. Do NOT Trust this place. I had recently bought a "new" older bike and wanted someone to check it out and mount a newer used tire on the front wheel. I had rode over hauling the tire strapped to my backpack. The one on the bike was a mess and extremely dangerous. When I arrived I stood around for awhile, before spotting the owner (I think) in the work area, chowing down on a subway...So, yeah I guess I disturbed his lunch...That was a mistake. I told him that I just wanted to him to give it a once over ..maybe test ride it and let me know if there's any serious issues with it. He started to berate the condition of the bike and told me that he couldn't put an old tire on the bike even if the one on there was worse. Meanwhile, the front desk gal shows up (probably back from her lunch) and gets some paper work going. She comes over as the owner is explaining that my bike needed a new "this and that"...and he wouldn't take it for a test ride because of the condition of the back sprocket and chain..."this is so bad I would never ride a bike with that badly worn" ..the girl next to him chimes in.." yeah, that's the worst I've ever seen"...I was like ????? this was an '08 650R with 8k on it ..the chain and sprocket were FINE and not dangerous. I really felt like I was being scammed ..especially when his puppet employee echoed his assessment in a most insincere tone. I left and went to another shop in SE and asked all the same questions..THAT mechanic did the work I needed (had me sign a waiver for the tire I brought with me which I gladly did) and expressly told me that the chain and sprocket had plenty of life on them ..and didn't need replacing at this time. Are you sure ??I grilled ..."Yes..who told you different"? Cycletune that's who. The positive reviews are most likely friends of the owner because if they conduct business as I have experienced it ...there is NO way the positive reviews are legit. Just beware. read more

A car made my bike fell off its stand at a parking at night and broke my clutch lever. I was on my way to California and couldn't find a place to have it changed quickly. Called 2 weeks ago to see if they could do carb work on my 87 Honda Rebel 450. Been working on bikes for years, cleaned and rebuilt the carbs on the bike a little while ago but had an annoying little flat spot that was in need of a carb guru. Over the phone they said sure we work on older Hondas all the time and to bring it by. I asked them to double check with a tech since it was only made for a few years, they assured me it would be no problem. I burn my one day off this week to ride it down there and without looking at the bike or asking details about what need to be done they declined to work on the bike. Very disappointing they weren't able to tell me this over the phone, rode home disappointed. All things aside they appear to be a small-ish shop with two tech, 4 lifts and a receptionist. read more

Had tune up done to 2001 Honda shadow, upon return the bike ran like new, there was an issue with a rear wheel spacer that was missing. They Got a temporary replacement while the other was ordered so I could ride the bike while waiting. When part arrived it was replaced for just the cost of the part. I called Cycletune attempting to set up a service date for their Level Two Tune up and was told I needed to bring the motorcycle in for inspection(wtf?!). I found time in my schedule to ride over and leave the bike. Like others, I was told by a guy named Chris that I'd receive an estimate via email the next day. 4 & 1/2 days later, I'd received no estimate and so returned to Cycletune to retrieve my bike. I was told my estimate slipped through the cracks, so sorry, that I'd receive a discount on parts, etc. Another 3 days passed and I finally received the lost, somewhat exorbitant estimate via email. No way, pardner. No thanks for the major inconvenience of dispossessing me of my bike for the better part of a week, and no thanks for the abysmally poor customer service. I wouldn't know if they're proficient motorcycle mechanics. Spend your hard-earned $$$ somewhere else. read more

This shops practices are Abominable!!! The Owner has no moral hangups with scamming his customers! These guys are Crooks! Go to Motorcycle Warehouse! My story is this... I had bought my first motorcycle (an 82 Honda cb750f) from a friend. Before the purchase my friend had taken the bike in to get an estimate done (since it was not in perfect condition but was running) and had been told it needed carb work and a few other minor things and the cost would be $600 to $800. I decided it was reasonable and was told by the shop that the estimate would be honored since it was only a few months ago that the estimate was done. So I agreed to have the work done on the invoice. This was the first week of June 2015. They said two weeks tops for the work. I was stoked! Then two days later I was contacted by the shop and told i needed a new tire and other work done, so they sent a new estimate and the new total was now approximately $1300. I also was told they would not touch my bike unless they were approved to do all work. After talking with the owner Chris about just doing the work I wanted I was told "It is not worth working on your motorcycle without the extra work because we could be making more $ working on other bikes." First red flag. I really wanted the repairs done so I could ride over the summer so I agreed to the extra work. Two weeks went by and I heard nothing. So I waited three extra days and then called. I was told It was half done, just waiting on parts but should be done by the following week. I let another week and a half go by (yet again without hearing anything from the shop) and then went in to check on the bike. To my astonishment the bike was not even touched!! When I asked why I was lied to they denied even telling me it had been worked on and then tried to tell me the bike did not run and needed extensive work that would cost aprox. $2600! not to mention I needed to find and buy the parts myself. I refused and pulled the bike. It was no longer starting up, so I had to push it home (remember it did run when I brought it in!) When I took a look at why it was not starting I figured out that some wires were disconnected. I reconnected them and she fired right up, albeit still not sounding great....So again I was lied to and my motorcycle was messed with to make it look worse than it was. I ended up buying another bike to ride over the summer, but just took my CB in to Motorcycle Warehouse to get it done over...Funny thing is it took them two weeks exactly and only ended up costing just over $350. Don't waste your time, or give these crooks your hard earned money! Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere! read more

Heads up: I'd give zero stars if Yelp allowed it. This place came highly recommended to me. At first, I was stoked about them; they sent me a list of all the parts they would need for the services I needed... Which was awesome cause I was able to research the parts and ensure they weren't over-charging me (mechanics and women, clearly). My bike arrived at the shop on April 9th. The promise date for everything being done was May third- they gave me time to save money. This is when the bullshit started. I called on May third to find out what time to pick up my motorcycle (I was SO STOKED), I hadn't ridden in weeks and it was nice weather), only to find out that the tires were one back order, but everything else was done. It would be "done in ten days." Ten days later I received a phone call from Deena (the only professional at this shop apparently), saying the tires still hadn't arrived. This happened four more times, eventually they had to order a different, CHEAPER, set of tires (Sooo, the payment should be cheaper, right?). Finally, by June 7th, Deena called and said the new tires were on- but they were still syncing the carbs (WHAT? I was told everything was done but the tires)! My bike would be done June 10th. Keep in mind, this is my only mode of transportation, and I pay $55/month for parking garage. Today, June 13th, I went in pretty upset with the total lack of communication and absolutely asinine amount of time they took. I spoke with the owner, Chris, and voiced my frustrations (if you want returning customers, you treat them right). And that's when things went REALLY downhills for this relationship. Chris basically told me that communication with his customers, "wasn't his job." Then tried saying he'd give me a free oil change (1: they already changed my oil 2: I can change my own oil 3: fuck that shit). When I pointed this out, he turned to my boyfriend, and (probably assuming some sort of male reasoning bond) asked him his opinion (as if my boyfriend would take HIS side and not mine). Eventually, he asked me what sort of discount I wanted. I said 15% discount on the tires, since they were what cause the wait in the first place. Chris's reaction was ( and I quote): "I'll take the risk with you guys (as far as returning customers go), this is a waste of my time." I set the money on the counter. Asked for my change and my bike. Chris was completely disrespectful to me, and clearly was not concerned about making his customer satisfied. At the end he tried smoothing things over by showing everything they did (it's all on the receipt, what do you want, a gold sticker?). In the end, the work was all done. They are flexible, but their customer service skills are worse than anal rape. Chris is a prick, and only nice if you are happy with their work. Two months of good weather, a good chunk of money, and a lot of frustration wasted on this guy. My suggestion? Find somewhere that will COMMUNICATE with you when there's some sort of issue or delay, cause that's the PROFESSIONAL thing to do (right?). read more

I hired a truck and took it in. Four days later they called and said they wouldn't fix it unless I signed on for the $451 level 2 maintenance program. I brought my Yamaha here for the standard 8000 mile service. I found them on Craigslist and they had an offer of 10% off service. I was fairly happy with services provided. My biggest issue with Cycletune was the communication. I had tried to call and get an update on the status of my bike multiple times but got the answering machine and no call back. It was recommended to me that I needed new tires and that they would not perform service without which is fine. For the first week my bike sat, 3rd party tires arrived and I brought them to the shop in hopes it would be by the end of that day before my bike was done. It took another 3 days to finish up. I go to pick up the bike and I say" I found you guys on Craigslist so can I save 10%? Sure we take it off of parts!! I saved $12.00!! But I did get handed a coupon for 10% off everything the next time I come in. When all was said and done I paid about $800 bucks for service and tires, which is about 10% of the bikes cost new in '09. For the most part I didn't get the feeling as to the shops greatness as I had read elsewhere! Not sure if there will be a next time. read more

Service snob, not a foodie, but since I don't eat motorcycle, you can guess this is about service. I have gone to Cycletune for about 8 years. Back when he was jammed in the back of another shop on Division. Back then his (Chris) prices for work were good (like real good) he did unparalleled work and when you went in you spoke to the owner, the guy who would do the work. Oh how times have changed. No no the quality but Chris now has a staff. He has a person who answers the phone, he had folks who do work and just like every good service provider the people he hires are even more skilled in specialized aspect than he is (and he knows his business). These days his shop is hopping. 3-4 guys working on bikes, Chris and an office manager in the office and nearly 100 bikes in various state of repair. If your bike part is easy to get, you can get it fixed in three days tops. I have walked in and walked out 30 minutes later with a repaired bike. If the parts are more challenging, you will have a longer wait, but it's not the guys, I have seen them do some excellent work very quickly. Note he only works on Asian bikes, but that is pretty much anything not Italian, German or a Harley. Not that his guys couldn't, but you gotta specialize somehow. This is what I suggest. Get an oil change and eat at DiNicola's or The Original Taco house nearby. Get a great meal, work done on your bike and spend less than $150 in total. Assuming you don't order drinks.
