Not too good for buying mountain bikes, but OK for lots of other things…read more I've been into The Bike Shop on Crossgates Road quite a few times over the last few weeks as I have been in the process of buying bikes for myself and my fiance. It's great for the casual cyclist. However, and it's quite a big however, they don't have that much choice of manufactures and they don't have a lot of bikes out on display. For example, they only had Specialized women's bikes built up and in the store. Their other relatively high-end manufacturer is Kona and they have some pricing issues at the moment as most people will be aware. On the plus side, the staff are extremely helpful, and they have a very good selection of kids bikes, BMX and commuter cycles. Although we bought our bikes elsewhere, we did go back to this store to purchase a car rack and a fair few other accessories and they were really helpful showing me how to set the bike rack up on my car.

We went back on the internet and found the Bike Shop on Crossgates Road, Leeds. What an amazing experience! A massive range of quality bikes. The staff are so helpful and can't do enough for you. Apparently that wasn't clear enough and they just went ahead and changed things and did what they decided they wanted to! The person in charge started off as unhelpful and then progressed to defensive and finally offensive. I do not expect to be sworn at by someone I am paying to provide a service! If you like to receive a bike back that is in worse mechanical shape than when it went in, then by all means, visit Haxby Cycles!

I always take my bike here even though I live the other side of York. PS: They are also great with female cyclists, when I say this I mean that in my experience there are some shops (Bob Trotters to name the worst in York) who are lacking some equality in the way they approach female customers, as with most places in York here, they provide great service to everyone with a bicycle.

Then when someone did serve me he walked off halfway through me choosing something. On a number of visits the service did improve slightly. It's been in business in one…read moreform or another since the 1930s, fulfilling all the locals' cycling needs and generally doing an admirable job of keeping money out of the pockets of the huge chains that increasingly dominate this sort of trade. Nowadays, you can take your pick from a range of new bikes, often heavily discounted, or choose an 'off the peg' or custom frame. They do repair work at very reasonable prices too, and will even chrome-plate your tandem, should that be a service you ever require.

Actually a pretty good shop, but the single brand choice of hardware didn't really excite me. They have a better range of clothing and other accessories. The shop is actually run by the same people that own another cycle shop in Harrogate - Boneshaker Performance Cycles - this one is more up my street and stocks mass produced trail bike maker extraordinaire Lapierre, which is an altogether better proposition than Specialized, at least as far as I'm concerned it is. Visit on a day of that isn't Sunday or Monday and both stores will be open and you can see the full range of product in the two shops.

Specialist shops like this are always going to cost a bit to shop in, but I was pleasantly surprised to get a decent bike in the for about £200. The staff initially appear to be reassuringly knowledgeable, capable and friendly. However, every time I have been in there I have ended up with the same member of staff dealing with me. He appears to be unable to set my gears up right and when I took my bike in for a service and mentioned that they were not right he some how managed to make them worse. I was surprised by this. But they do seem quite busy which might have been the problem? What should be an excellent shop has been marred by of incidents of ineptness; perhaps I just got unlucky?

They are well-stocked with high quality cycling equipment and have a broad range of products for all kinds of cyclists and price-ranges. The shop is a good size and neatly stocked with a pleasant, welcoming atmosphere. They also do a wide range of repair services and the quality of their work can be evidenced by the fact that they also service the bikes of local police and paramedics! I recently bought a bike lock there and they were happy to give honest advice on the quality versus price dilemma, making me feel confident that I'd made the best choice for my budget.

I've never been into a specialist bike shop before (and probably won't again for a while!) but…read morehubby dragged me in today to 'show' me a bike he's been looking at. They had an absolutely enormous array of bikes on display, quite amazing for such a small shop, and there were plenty of customers so they must be doing something right. They've got a little lift at the back, which is great for such a small store for disabled access, or as I used it, to get a pushchair upstairs. Only complaint in that department was that it was very difficult to steer the pram between the displays and I couldn't actually fit through a lot of the gaps, so I guess it would be near impossible with a wheelchair. My husband had a discussion with one of the staff which comprised a load of words I've never heard before, but apparently the guy certainly knew his stuff. The kids section was small and rather disappointing, with only £100+ bikes on display - I don't really want to spend this on something a 4yr old is only going to trash in the back garden before promptly growing out of it, so I was a little put off at the lack of budget bikes for kids. Otherwise, it was a good experience, and although the bikes are expensive (they've got some in there that cost more than a small car!), there seemed to be some decent sale prices.

Again with the cuddling of the bike, we wander in and are greeted by a smiley chappy who seemed to telepathically sense my friend's utter sense of loss. Taking it off her, they both engaged in mutual admiration of the bike, sorry Marin. He feels her pain, says it'll take a while, but it's totally fixable, he can have it as good as new. She asks a pitiful "do you promise?", followed by more reassurances. A few days later, we return, the bike looks all pretty again, and she seemed super pleased. It was a lot of money in my opinion, but again I was reassured this was a bargain, and after a test ride, she swore it was worth every penny. So excellent place to go if you've got a two wheeled treasure in sincere need of some TLC.
