CW Taekwondo is a cool place. I've been coming for nearly six years, and hope to advance in TKD as much as I can.

Hi I am interested in the kickfit classes. Could you let me know more or less the prices per month? Many thanks! Joana

Hi Joana - unfortunately, we no longer offer our kickfit classes. But a membership still offers unlimited access to our other 13 weekly adult classes!

Hello, I'm interested in the cardio KickFit class- do these classes use gloves? If so, are gloves provided?

Hi Nicholas, Thanks for your question! We use target mitts without gloves or hand wraps. If you want to bring your own gloves or hand wraps, feel free to do so! Just note that we often work in partner pairs and trade the target mitts back and forth… Read more

Are the instructors qualified to teach or care about their students? Are there enough classes offered to keep a regular schedule? This school checks all right criteria to be a good school. Not only a good one, it is probably one of the best one in the world! This happens to be my 22nd martial arts school I attended during my lifetime, and I will have really hard time when I need to relocate due to my job. I am spoiled to drop in whenever I want since there are classes both noon time and in the afternoon all week. No schools have such a vast class offering. Thank you Mr. Hwang!

Each teacher definitely has their different styles--some were really good at verbally explaining a particular technique, while others taught best through physical instruction. Apparently, the man who started this school, Jae H Kim, studied with the best tae kwon do master of this century (I've been told Kim's mentor created this particular martial art, but it's been around, in some form, for hundreds of years, so...) My fellow classmates were helpful and I never felt I was being judged if I hadn't fully learned a move. The manager of the school, Mr Wong, is the sort of teacher every student (child or adult) loves to have: he's relaxed and compassionate, but still gets you to do the work! You learn discipline here, but don't feel like anyone will get out the rod if you mess up. And...it's a true community. It's not quite as tight as the capoeira group I studied with, but still a definite collective. You'll have to sign up for a 6-month commitment when you join, which I think is good, since the whole reason I joined was to gain more discipline. And they'll hook you up with a uniform and make you feel at home. So go try it out!

It should be noted that this school is nonprofit, and all of the instructors have day jobs. They teach because they all truly love the art and want to pass it along to those who want to learn. This is not to put down any of the reputable for-profit martial arts studios in the area, but it is just one of the things that makes Cambridge TSD different. Back to the class...you will learn something new each session. Other students are friendly and always willing to help each other out, as courtesy and respect are the foundations of our art. The location of the school is actually in the Cambridge Athletic Club in the Atheneaum Building in Kendall Square. You can either join the gym or just sign up for the martial arts training. Classes are primarily held in the newly renovated "dojang" which is also doubles as the gym's group exercise room. On weekends, there are kids classes as well and parents are encouraged to join. I switched from taekwondo, which had more of a focus on sport sparring, to tang soo do. I find that tang soo do has more of a complete martial art focus, because we train both hand and foot techniques, self defense, weaponry, sparring, forms, and more. Additionally, there is a great emphasis on truly learning the art, the history and meaning behind each move and why it's done. If you're curious about the martial arts, learning self defense, or looking for a new form of exercise, then I highly recommend checking this place out. Convenient to the T and free parking as well.

After looking at many different schools, we were sold on the Cha family as soon as we watched one of their classes for children. The Cha's artfully mixed rigor and discipline with compassion and understanding in managing a diverse group of students while keeping the class fun but structured. We were also impressed with their offering of family classes that allowed parents and children to train together--something which helped keep my son going through the program and kept him committed past his black belt. The Cha's are also very committed to the community they have built among their school's members. They do what they can to help and support families and were outstanding during the pandemic by structuring online classes, developing a remote testing program so that students could advance in rank, and driving and delivering belts to the students. Leading by example, the Cha's have created a community of members who are all supportive and respectful of each other. Since re-opening in the summer of 2021 in a beautiful new location, the Cha's are offering an outstanding program of in-person training (masked for now). Cha's Taekwon-Do is an excellent place for children to build confidence and discipline (that translates to school work), for families to train together and share in the experience, and for adults to improve their fitness and flexibility while learning a practical martial art. I have seen many other martial arts schools over the years and none compares to Cha's Taekwon-Do. It is definitely worth a look.

Next, I've gone to a lot of different tai chi classes over the years, and this was not traditional at all. It was in a room where people were practicing martial arts, so there was a lot of grunting and fast movements as well as a few collisions as I was standing, trying to do tai chi. If you're OK with that sort of chaos, it might be entertaining to you, but don't expect anything traditional. Oom Yung Doe combines movement and meditation in a balance to create individualized programs for each and every student. The instructors are very knowledgable and give individualized attention, as well as are flexible in their schedules. Not only are there classes every weekday in the afternoon and evening, plus on Saturdays, but more than once, when I could not make it in for a class, an instructor has moved his schedule around so I could come in. If you are dedicated to the school, the school will be dedicated to you. Movement-wise, students study forms in eight different types and styles of martial arts, including many different weapons. While there is not an emphasis put on sparring, there are frequent self-defense portions of class so that students can defend themselves if faced with a bad situation. Students are also taught movements to help in medical issues they might have coming in, or to help prevent issues from coming up in the future. I have never been in better shape in my life. On top of it all, the school puts an emphasis on helping others in your every day life. While the message can get repetitive, it is always a good reminder that while you are helping yourself, you can always spend a little extra effort to help a fellow human being. Overall, I would highly recommend this school.
