Had a pic of "cut" I was given. I warned the stylist that I had a number of " "cowlicks" and to be aware of them. The stylist started slowly brushing through my hair to see which way my hair fell (which should be the proper procedure). That is when the owner came by, wound up a timer and set it for about 20 minutes. She then promptly sat down, arms crossed and watched. Obviously, this got the stylist nervous and she quickly started cutting. And out popped my cowlicks like 'wack-a-moles! At the end of the cutting, hair product was liberally applied to control what was left of my hair. What a disaster! read more

This is my new "go to", for colouring and haircuts! Jeez where to begin. Ok, PROS: the place looks very nice and is kept spotless; the staff are helpful but not pushy; Benji was both my colourist and stylist - she asked me questions about my hair such as how much time I wanted to spend working with it each day; how short/thick I wanted it, etc. She was excellent! I came away feeling Beautiful! I'm definitely going back! CONS: well, ok. There are steps involved if one is going in for a Colouring as that is done upstairs. Also, If you are looking for a really cheap hair salon - this isn't it: I had highlights put in to take away some of the white (I passed grey some time ago). This, together with the Excellent head massage done while rinsing after the colouring and cut & style, set me back about $160. These people know their worth - and believe me, they are worth it! read more

This salon is amazing: well-organized and clean which was my first impression. Fiona and her team were skillful and genuine in giving me the service I wanted that I felt welcomed having my hair done. The price was a bit up there but based on my hair goal and service they gave, totally worth it. I knew what they were doing with my hair, every step taken and what the expectations were, in comparison with what I wanted at first point, based on the previous colour I had and my hair bond. I am so happy we have a salon like Cutting Room in Nanaimo. I have been going for almost 3 years now and I like to drastically change hairstyle on a regular basis. My stylist Candace has always met my expectations. I always get compliments after a new cut and regularly have people ask where I get my hair cut. Each time I visit I see many customers getting new cuts and they always leave looking amazing and happy. Their stylists ask questions to understand what you are looking for. They take time to get to know your styling routine and don't shy away for telling clients a certain style may not suit them. read more

It's a hair massacre! First my colour gets screwed up....then my cut...I get told by the stylist she'll fix it for free so I go in to get it fixed and she charges me for the new colour - another girl tries to fix the cut and now it looks like a chainsaw was taken to it....she chopped 5 inches off!!! Ponytail for the next 3 weeks until I can get in to see my girl in Vancouver. Never going back....and you should be warned!!! read more

I don't know why this place doesn't have more reviews! It is widely regarded as one of the most high end salons in Nanaimo. I have tried many salons/barbers in varying price ranges. You might think the price is quite a bit higher, but they spend nearly twice the time working on your hair than other places. I go to see Christine with an idea and several pictures to work from and it always turns out way better than I expected. This place competes in National/International competitions. The knowledge is extensive, and employee training top notch. Not to mention the hair products they sell are the best I've used, and sell cheaper than they do online. I would recommend anyone to try this salon, there are varying price options depending on seniority/experience, so there is some flexibility for your budget! read more

As good as a salon can get. Beautiful facility, great staff, and, most importantly, world-class hair styling (but still reasonably priced). Personally, I have had my hair cut at Cutting Room Creative twice by Jenelle. Although my hair is thinning, she manages to give me a shorter cut that still looks good weeks later. read more

The above review doesn't sound at all like the Cutting Room Creative I know and I wouldn't want anyone to have that impression because what the other reviewer said simply does not fit in with the owners' or staff's philosophy. They are all about customer service and customer satisfaction and are also this year's winners of the Contessa Awards for all of Canada. I have been going to Edwin, Fiona and other staff members for my hair colour and cuts for many years now and I couldn't say more about how happy I am with my experiences there. read more

Established in 1984.

The Cutting Room Creative has been a fixture in Nanaimo since 1984. The second generation family business moved to its Ross Rd location in 1992. Today we are proud to introduce Nanaimo to our new location on Dublin Way. A modern, comfortable space over 2 floors, putting a convenient location together with customer comfort and care.

Where can you find the best hairstylist in North America? The answer is ..Nanaimo. Here, on this tiny, beautiful island in an unassuming, meticulously-run, relaxing salon is the best of the best. Edwin, owner/sylist and might I add, elite marathoner, won Master Stylist of the Year at the North American Hairstyling awards last year in Las Vegas as well as Canadian Elite Hairstylist at the Contessa Awards for two years in a row and BC Hairstylist of the Year...Add to that, his wife and partner, Fiona, who also has won numerous awards and is always at the forefront of the best and latest advances and trends in the world of color .Surely winning awards isn't all there is to a successful, first-rate salon, no, but being true artistic masters of their craft, passionate and a dedication to the professional development of their staff makes this so. My entire family and I have been going to the Cutting Room for 7 years and I have ALWAYS had impeccable service . . . starting the minute I walk through the door, to the minute I leave. I know firsthand that the staff all go through extensive training in their field and it shows!! Their consistency is unreal . . . starting with taking my coat, offering herbal tea, coffee or water, and a very short wait every time . . . and they are great with kids!!. I have had my hair cut and coloured by several different stylists ranging from the junior level to the owners and have always left with amazing hair. Keep it up Cutting Room!! You're awsome. Thank you Fiona for fitting me in on Friday for a last minute touch up!! I know that I rushed you . . . but of course I left with my usual AMAZING colour and received two compliments just that day!! I have been a customer of the Cutting Room for several years now and have always had very professional treatment. Everytime I go I am asked about how I felt about the last cut and colour and if I had any problems. They listen to my experience with my hair and make suggestions. Also when I want something new in style, the cut is discussed with me taking into account my hair type and what it might do in that style and also whether is suits my features. It is very easy to give someone a cut from a picture in a magazine but they work with you and tell if they don't think it will work with your hair or facial features. I moved to them after my last hair dresser just kept repeating the same style and colour over and over and never asked me what I wanted or how I was liking my cut. I have always felt that everyone in the shop works together to make sure you leave feeling great about the cut and the colour. read more

I have been a client of the Cutting Room Creative for several years and a *happy* customer. I drive an hour one way to get to my appointments as well. My services include colors and cut. I have been growing my hair out and they were very helpful with managing the style as it grew out so that my 'awkward phase' was brief and we had a plan to work to the whole time. My colors, by Fiona, have always been great and they always consult with me. My cuts are done by Edwin who is an award winning stylist! The entire staff are friendly and helpful from a coffee to prebooking my next appointment to just chatting. I see many beautiful hair cuts going out the door by the other stylists... I have been a customer of the Cutting Room for many years. Even though I now live in Qualicum Beach I still drive to Nanaimo every 5 weeks so that Edwin can cut my hair. He always makes me feel fabulous. I also get colours done a few times a year. All of the staff are extremely friendly and are always accommodating if I need to switch appointments around. I usually try to shop in my local community but I am so happy with the professional service and great atmosphere at the Cutting Room I would never go anywhere else. I am proud to say I get my hair cut by an award winning stylist. It's not a hair massacre! Reading the previous Yelp review has left me breathless. This does not sound like the same salon I have been going to for many years. I have always found my cuts and colours to be of a very high level. I can't count how many times I have been stopped in the grocery store and asked, Where do you get your hair done? not only is my hair terrific but the staff are exceptional and I love the ambience of their new location. I drive 2 hours to go to the Cutting Room Creative and it's well worth it. Edwin who has won master stylist in North America and best stylist in Canada twice is the best you'll find ever. Just google him and you'll see. Fiona ,his wife, has coloured my hair several times and won many awards as well. You can't find a better salon than this one. Love love love my hair. Not only did I get my grey (yuck!) roots touched up but when asked how I wanted my hair blown dry, I asked for curls. I ended up getting a trial run of how I'd like to wear my hair to my daughter's wedding in September. I love this kind of service. Now if only I could add a picture. read more
