    Vegetable Samosa

I came here with a friend on a Saturday around 6 PM and didn't need a reservation, even though it was pretty packed. It was a pretty chill environment, and we could easily hold conversation conversations with one another since it wasn't too loud. Our server was amazing. He gave great recommendations and had such a fun, welcoming personality. Our food took about 20-25 minutes to come out, but it was definitely worth the wait. We ordered: Vegetable Samosa: came with two and two dipping sauces. Crispy and really flavorful. Daal Makhni: my first time trying it, and I loved it. Rich, well-made, and full of flavor. They mentioned it doesn't include coconut milk, but it still tasted amazing. Bone-In Butter Chicken: super flavorful and delicious. The server recommended the bone-in for extra flavor, which I agree with, but it was a bit messy and didn't come off the bone easily. I'd probably try boneless next time. Tandoori Roti: thin, fresh, and the perfect addition to pair with the main dishes. I went with a friend who has a lot of experience with Indian food, and she said this is one of her top spots and would definitely come back. I completely agree. The food felt very authentic, there are tons of options, and the service was great. Would definitely come back!

Curry Nation is the rare newcomer that walks into a crowded room full of tired, copy‑paste Indian spots and immediately raises the bar. No hesitation, no warm‑up lap. They show up with the goods. Start with the Gobi Manchurian. Fried cauliflower in a sweet and spicy glaze that hits with the force of a roundhouse. This thing slaps so hard it could make Chuck Norris flinch. It's the kind of appetizer that makes you look around the room like, "Has this been here the whole time and nobody told me?" Then you stack the classics. Chana masala that tastes like someone actually cared. Butter chicken that is silky, rich, and comforting without being a sugar bomb. A cauldron of basmati that smells like it was steamed by a benevolent deity. Put it all together and suddenly you're eating like the Prince of Hillcrest. Service seals the deal. Personal without hovering, professional without stiffness. You feel taken care of. You feel welcomed. You feel like they're genuinely proud of what they're serving. I gotta say it: this is the best Indian food I've had on the west coast. Curry Nation isn't just good for the neighborhood. It's good, period. Five stars, no hesitation.

I was craving Indian food and remembered this place opened right by me so thought I'd check it out. Service was good but a little on the slow side. Food was really good, though! I ordered their wings, chicken tikka masala, garlic cheese naan, and mango pineapple chicken. Spice levels were mild, medium, and hot. I ordered medium for all the dishes and it just had a nice kick to it; not too spicy. I'll have to try their hottest next time. Everything had a good flavor and portion size was really good.

The food's quality was absolutely delicious and so well made with reasonable portions. It is easily in my top three favorite Indian places in the county and the price was reasonable, $16 to $20 for most meals. Unfortunately, the entirety of the street is undergoing construction and it was somewhat noisy, which makes their patio area nearly unusable during construction. But this is an issue every business on the street is dealing with and I don't hold it against them. The only problem I had was the server, who is incredibly friendly and nice but said multiple questionable things regarding my young son. At first I chalked it up to him being overly friendly but even if that was the case, things got extremely uncomfortable towards the end of the meal. Because of this reason it's unlikely I would return, at least with my kids.

We came here after a night out at gossip grill. We were hungry and craving Indian so we decided to come here and boy were we in for a treat!!! Staff was super nice and helpful and the interior is gorgeous and aesthetic. We ordered fry wings and chicken tikaa masala with the cheese naan. Oh my word, everything was divine. The wings were juicy and fall off the bone. I will note, two were still cold in the center, so they may double fry them but tbh it doesnt even matter because they were THAT good. The chicken tikaa misala was flavorful, juicy, and had that heat that got hotter with each bite. The rice was so fresh and soft, it is the best rice I've had at an Indian food place. The cheese naan was miraculous. It was literally just normal naan with a cheesy center, I think I'm ruined for all other naan now. I am absolutely entranced. Anytime I am back in Hillcrest I may have to come here for dinner.

This is the latest eatery to operate out of a Hillcrest suite that has seen many restaurants (e.g. Italian, seafood) cycle through its premises. Unfortunately, the recent debut has coincided with a major retrenching of Fifth Ave right in front of the business that will last at least a year. That has reduced the amount of nearby curbside parking on the street. The construction fencing also obscured the visibility of Curry Nation which was not optimal. The inside had seating for about two dozen customers. I think most people opted for takeout (or delivery) because of the self-serve ordering tablet at the service counter. I dined in and sat at one of the two-top tables with a three-page menu booklet given to me. Appetizers (veggie and non-veggie) and Vegetarian Entrees were listed on the first page. Tandoori Kebabs and Non-Vegetarian Entrees made up the second page. The last page featured breads, soups, rice, sides, beverages, and desserts. I ordered the Vegetable Samosa for an appetizer. The classic Indian pastry with a veggie filling came as two pieces on a bed of spinach leaves. Mint chutney and tamarind were provided on the side as dipping sauces. The dough seemed thicker and not as crispy as the samosas I have tried elsewhere. A Meat Lovers section on the second page allowed one to create your own non-vegetarian entree. I went with this option and picked the Saagwala out of the six available sauces along with Shrimp from the three kinds of meat/protein. The sauce consisted of a spinach base that I requested with mild spiciness. The order came with a container of white jasmine rice on the side. I liked how six generous pieces of medium shrimp were included. The spinach curry didn't have any heat which made it a bit bland. The service from the staff was pleasant and prompt. I was the only dine-in customer at the time while a few folks dropped in to pick up to-go orders. I hope Curry Nation can thrive despite the intrusive construction zone right in front of its address. I gave a four star rating for my recent weeknight dinner.

Curry Nation just opened a few months ago and we stumbled upon it on a late night birthday dinner celebration. Talk about 5 star service!! They went above and beyond welcoming us. Their dishes were full of flavor and great ingredients. The saag paneer was my absolute favorite. Not watery like some previous places, and such generous portions. I highly recommend checking them out.

You need to go here asap! I was so surprised by the hospitality and the dedication the server had to making our experience great! The food was above and beyond and they gave me a little something extra for my birthday at no charge. There is construction being done that is currently blocking the building so please make sure you hype this place up so they get seen. The ambiance was so nice too. The portions are very generous! They really are doing a great job.

So happy Curry Nation opened in Hillcrest! The food was fresh, flavorful, and really hit the spot. Great portions, rich spices, and everything tasted made with care. Staff was friendly and welcoming too. Excited to have a solid Indian food spot in the neighborhood. Definitely coming back to try more!

    Dahl soup so good
    Adria D.

This place is literally amazing I'm so glad there's finally great Indian food close to me. There's construction out front so it might be hard to miss if you're driving on 5th you see Noah on 5th and it's the opposite side of the street. I had the chicken tikka masala, lentil dahl soup, and cheese garlic naan. Everything was so good the naan could have been crispier that's my only complaint, it was a bit soggy. Maybe that's because of the cheese I don't know but it still tasted good. I thought it seemed a bit pricey but I'm willing to pay for a good quality food however they were huge portions like I'm still eating the leftovers and I went yesterday and I'm going to have more for dinner so this is like three meals for sure maybe four. The gal at the work and the cook and other people were very friendly however I only saw the one gal trying to answer the phone take orders and I feel like she's still learning. I did have to ask for ice two times but eventually I got my ice. The chairs are not very comfortable. But it looks nice and clean, fairly basic.

My friend and I had a great meal here -- lamb biryani, samosas, and of course garlic naan. Jay is incredible, great service and so friendly! We will definitely be back!

Some things have changed. The chai was excellent which I ordered while I waited. Everything smelled so good on the way home in the car. When we got home and had the food, the flavors were nice, but a few things were not so good. I will attribute it with costs of a small business trying to stay alive in this economy. Because the differences I noticed were cost related. First of all the baingan bharta should be called baingan peas because it was a sea of green peas. And I do not like peas. It is not even possible to get a bite without peas or to separate them out, it is chock full of peas. I didn't even see any eggplant pieces in there. Peas are way cheaper than eggplant. Secondly the kashmiri naan which hubby and I love - and have been ordering for years was different. We used to go there just for the Kashmir naan. But this time it was nothing special. It was thin with less filling and with more coconut (cheaper) than the last time we ordered it. There were no cherries that I could tell which used to be the main flavor with some nuts. The naan itself was thin. I was craving the good thick pillowy Indian bread stuffed full of deliciousness. But all I could taste was stale naan. I know that French almond croissants are traditionally made by filling the day old croissants with almond paste. And they are delicious. Maybe that's how kashmiri naan is made. But this naan just tasted stale. So I was disappointed. The other disappointment came with the to-go packaging. Everything was tightly wrapped in plastic wrap, however still something leaked through one of the brown paper bags making it tear through. Secondly when I opened the plastic container of the korma it squirted all over me and stained my ivory sweater. So I was already bummed by that experience even before opening the peas bharta. It appears the restaurant had rebranded itself as Indian Punjabi Cuisine and has a new Panjabi teddy bear logo. So I'm thinking that perhaps the ownership has changed hands. I didn't see the older Indian lady owner who is usually there during the lunchtime. Oh, they have the butter chicken on the backside of the menu with three other house specialties and I didn't see it until after I had placed the order -or I would have ordered that instead of the chicken tiki masala for my dad. We haven't had the desserts yet, but I trust they'll be fine. Anyway don't take my word for it. Go check it out for yourself.

Not that I don't love a couple of places down there, but it's just not the kind of neighborhood (or non-neighborhood, as the case may be) that inspires confidence in its chain-dominated dining choices. Among the endless traffic and endless-er strip malls, however, Tandoori Guys was a very pleasant surprise. I've dropped in three or dour times now for their weekday lunch special, when from 11am-3pm $12.00 buys you a generous plate of rice, naan, salad, and your choice of curry. I've mostly ordered the Peshawari chicken, which is wonderfully flavorful with a spice level that it always perfectly calibrated to my order (i.e., pretty spicy). I also enjoyed the mysteriously named "Chicken Curry," the flavor of which is much less bland than the name. The rice, naan, and salad all complement the curry well, with the salad notable for it's wonderful dressing and a generous helping of diced cucumbers and tomatoes. The place is clean and functional, albeit a not terribly exciting busy strip mall location. The parking lot is not the easiest to manage, but that's a minor concern for such delicious Indian food.

We waited for a few moments by the entrance, and then we were seated at a two top next to the raised tables on the carpet. We ordered samosas, Naan, Chicken Saag & Mango Chicken. Dal: We were gifted two small cups of dal (lentil soup) with fresh cilantro. It was not as flavorful as it has been in the past, so we added salt and pepper, and that brought it to life. Samosas: Delicious! They were on the smaller side, but the tamarind sauce was delightful. - $4.99 Garlic & Cilantro Naan: Great and reasonably priced - $3.99 Chicken Saag - Spice level 4 - pretty hot, very tasty. Chicken and spinach in a rich sauce. - $15.99 Mango Chicken - Spice 4 - pretty hot, slightly sweet sauce and very flavorful chicken. - $15.99 Basmati rice: fine :) Glass bottles of water were placed on the table immediately, and when we finished one, another one was brought over right away. We appreciated this! There is plenty of parking in the lot. The could-be-better: The service was rather uneven today because there were only two waiters for the whole dining room and they had to seat folks, bus tables, handle to-go orders, and wait on tables. They definitely need more staff on weekends. As a result, the service came across as a bit gruff and harried. Our table near the carpeted seating areas was a little too small for all of the dishes, and when our used dishes were not taken off of the table, it was quite crowded. Additionally, when families arrived who needed to sit at the tables on the carpet, we were surrounded by people taking their shoes off, and it felt awkward and uncomfortable for a few minutes. We were just about done with our food when the families arrived, so we left shortly afterward, but it could be a bit much if we were there longer. There should be a "please wait to be seated" sign by the front door so customers don't walk into the restaurant and stand around by the desk, and crowd the folks who are already seated in the dining room, or worse, pounce on a table that someone else is waiting for. Overall: The food here is good and reasonably priced. I will probably opt for take out more often than I dine in going forward (just to avoid the crowds), but I will be back. This restaurant feels authentic and genuine, and I like supporting family-owned businesses whenever possible. Mahalo!

I decided to go with the spicy level #9 with 10 being the spiciest which proved to be the perfect choice. The food was fresh and flavorful. The Service was top notch, making us feel welcomed and appreciated! Nothing fancy about this restaurant, just great food with great service. They have a fantastic lunch special from 11:00am to 3:30pm which is an awesome value. If you haven't dined here yet You need to otherwise I promise you your'e missing out!

I get there and I'm told I can only order off the main menu, not the special discount lunch menu. And then, everything had to be "To-Go" no dining in...LOLOLOL, I thought he was kidding, he was not. Incredible, in all the years using Groupon, I never ever encountered this level of control and restrictions. Food was okay, the price point seems 5% more than other Indian establishments. I haven't been here since 2019 B 4 Covid. Different cook for sure. I see no reason to return. 5 Indian cuisine restaurants within a one-mile radius. All better.

The porch faced a busy tourist street buzzing with people and it was great seeing everyone come and go. We started with the vegetable sambusas which outstanding. The spice level and filling were perfection and the pastry divine! I had the Shiro + Beggie which was out of this world! My friends shared a mixed vegan plate and everything on it was delicious! Next time I'm here in San Diego I'll remember to return. Highly recommended!

Saturday night after a show at the theater down the street, we were walking along Park and decided that was the night! It was almost 9 o'clock when we came into the charming house-turned-restaurant and asked if it was too late to get a table. We were assured it was the perfect time and seated right away. Our lovely server, Melissa, offered us expert guidance on the menu. We went with her suggestion of the roasted mushroom appetizer and were floored by them. I wouldn't expect to be so stunned by mushrooms of all things (I can only think of one other time and beer batter was involved then) but they're wonderfully seasoned and have unexpected crunchy bits. We completely cleaned the plate, scooping up all the spaghetti squash accompaniment. Our mains were also delicious, a fava bean and a lamb entree with cabbage and lentils as the sides. Melissa delivered extra injera without us even asking, and gave us the excellent tip as we headed out to add our leftovers to a pan of scrambled eggs. We did so the next morning, and ate them with our crisped up leftover injera, a very tasty cap to our experience with Muzita!
