I went to this hair salon because they are very close to my home and I wanted someone who could specialize in cutting curly hair. In the past I had gone to Jonathan's Torch's Curly Hair Institute (which is great but not as close). Although I felt they did a fairly good job, they ended up charging me and extra $47 for "overtime". My appointment went 20 minutes longer and they charged me for 30 minutes more. When I wrote to complain about this, they suggested the issue was that I hadn't sent a picture of my hair (which is super short) in prior to going. The main reason my appointment went over was because I was asking about colouring my hair - how they would do it and prices, because was considering on coming back to do that. Where to begin. My complaint regards the business owner herself and the business practices she has chosen to implement. - I was in her salon for about 10 minutes - maybe 15 - I chose the salon because it specializes in curly hair - I am a person with a learning disability - i am dyslexic - I arrived with clean hair expecting to get a hair cut to make my curls pop - my hair is about 3 inches long so quite short - The owner herself treated me with disregard and disrespect - her junior stylist did not - When the junior stylist was asking what i wanted done it was made clear to me that the texturizing i need for my hair would not be provided - there was no point continuing if there would be no texturizing because i have quite thick hair and it lays flat if not texturized - I stood and asked for a refund - the junior stylist said sure - The owner told her 'no - its all on the website' - That set me off - the disrespect shown to me, the disregard for me, my time and my money - i had to park, take the subway, and it also cost 1.5 hours of my day - I left the salon - quietly - and wrote this original review - When i got home there was an email from them - offering to upsell me on a hair cut that would give me what i want but for close to $300 - The owner responded to this review by calling me rude during my visit - blatantly untrue - The owner has since - in writing - accused me of behaviours that are flatly untrue and has insulted me - This business owner requires that the client knows and understands hair cutting techniques BEFORE getting their hair cut - including the technical terms for cutting approaches - 'it's all on the website' is her refrain - WARNING - if you do not understand the techniques, approaches, technical names of cutting methods - think twice - WARNING - if you don't (or can't) read every word on her website before making your appointment - think twice - WARNING - you will not be given any grace by this business owner for making a mistake - you will not receive your money refunded - WARNING - if you make a mistake you will be treated with disrespect, attacked, blamed - it is the practice of this business owner to blame the client - she accepts no culpability for her own actions and their consequences - I was able to get an excellent hair cut - with texturizing - for less than $100 - my curls pop - I'm very pleased with the cut I received at Maple Hair Salon - I am certain that, when this business owner responds to this review update, her retort will only serve to prove my assertion about her character - she will blame me, the client, for not reading every word of her website - she will say i acted badly - she will prove my point - As a person with a learning disability i am saddened that this business owner has an expectation that the client is responsible for learning the business of the purveyor - in my 61 years of getting hair cuts i have never needed to know what or how the cutter does their job - i simply sit in the chair, say what i need and i get a hair cut - it has never been an issue before - As a person without gender who has a dead name i am also saddened that this business owner chose to label me as an alias - clearly she is out of touch - CONSUMER BEWARE - you are free to choose who cuts your hair - use caution before approaching this business owner for any services - particularly customer service - you will only be disappointedConsumer beware. Horrible place. Owner treats new clients with contempt. Avoid at all costs. 10/10 Great service, super nice and friendly. My hair went from a long untamed mess to a stylish and beautiful shag. This lady knows how to cut/style curly hair, it's her thing! I liked the woman that owned the salon. I did not like my haircut color or bangs at all. I really wanted a dry devacurl cut nice and round . Not flat & cut wet I hate that. The guy brought my bangs forward to cut & they were too long and thin & the woman just cut. She never covered my Grey hair either. Which is what I really wanted. read more

I have been going to Adina at Curly Girls studio for years now. It is the best thing I have ever done for and to my hair. She brought out the real waves in my hair which I had not had the chance to appreciate because no other salon worked with curls. Other hairdressers straightened and wanted to "tame" my curls. With Adinas guidance and explanations, my curls naturally bounce and shine. My hair is VERY easy to maintain plus I get compliments from strangers all the time - including twice while I was shopping in a grocery store. If you have waves or curls, I strongly recommend that you bring your hair to Adina. She will make sure you know how to control your hair, not the other way around. read more

Not to be negative, but this was a really weird experience. I'm a visitor from N.Y., and I asked for an appt., and I got one pretty quickly considering I was only in town for about 10 days. I was put on a waitlist, then put in from a cancellation. The person I spoke to touched base with me very quickly, so I'd give them 5 stars in that dept., they were very prompt. I sent her an email of my hair and the style I was hoping for. I sent her pictures of my hair wet, and one picture of it when it was blowdried straight (w/o my permission), and 1 or 2 of the style I wanted (a simple pineapple bun with bangs). She told me she doesn't do updos, which was no problem. But then she said that she couldn't help me because people come to her for "cuts, curly styles and education and are not ironing their hair." I kept trying to tell her that I don't iron or even blowdry my hair ever, it was just to show the length of my hair, but she basically brushed me off. I told her that I was struggling on styling my hair and I just wanted some help and insight on how to handle it, and it was like the second they saw my hair mildly straightened, they couldn't be bothered to help me. On the one hand, I appreciate the idea of being honest so as not to waste anyone's time, but on the other I feel like there was bias and a huge wall put up the second they saw my hair. I don't think I was really given a fair chance at all. I didn't understand why one picture of my hair that was blowdried months ago, without my permission, when I've been natural for almost 3 years, was enough to condemn me. I asked for an explanation as to where their concerns were, and was never contacted again. Disappointing, and strange experience. Honestly, it made me feel really bad because I've just been trying to figure it out for so long, and a place that seemed like it could provide real insight just couldn't be bothered to do so. I was really excited because other reviews are amazing. Highly recommended! Adina and Yvonna were an absolute pleasure. They were completely professional, knowledgeable and sweet. I have finally committed going natural curly, so I opted for the Cut and Tutorial service. I have very thick and long hair, and it was just refreshing to have someone so patient with treating and styling my hair. Adina honestly looks out for your best interests, she didn't push to cut a lot of the hair off (since I said I really would like to keep as much length as possible), and she didn't push me to buy a bunch of products. The Deva Cut is something I wish I started doing years ago, instead of the standard wet and straight across trim. Overall I left very happy, and it's been 2 days since the cut and style, and my hair is still looking great! read more

It's a very good experience for me. Usually, everytime i go to a salon it makes me really anxious but Adina was the best and she taught me everything on how to take care of my curls. She will show you the process and assess your curls properly on what you really need. I would recommend her to all curly girls out there. read more

Went for a color session and highlights, the highlights weren't fully down the pieces of hair and couldn't even tell one had color. Very pricey in comparison to several other curl spots visited. Wouldn't recommend for tighter curl patterns, curls felt no love. read more

I'm so lucky to have Adina as my hair care specialist! I never thought I'd convince my 16-year-old son to go to her salon - he's been the victim of too many really bad hairdressers and barbers over the years and decided to stop cutting his hair. However, his hair really needed some TLC after two years without even a trim and since he's also a curly guy he agreed to let Adina help him. He walked in with a long, matted mess and left with a shiny, bouncy (yet manly) head of gorgeous waves! Adina saved my hair for my 60th birthday! After having a disastrous hair cut several weeks ago I found Adina who was able to fix it enough so I wasn't embarassed to be seen in public. She also did an amazing colour for me and spent a lot of time explaining and showing me how to use products which would be best for my hair type. She even had me back to experiment with other products and to tweak my hair cut for my birthday.
