4th and last stop on our city bus tour. The entire bus was excited because this is the time we get to be on our own for some shopping! Now, one of the tips our host gave us was that most (he was confident ALL) stores are open to bargaining, so if we saw something we liked to show the vendors and ask, "Cuantos menos?" meaning "how much less" can we get an item for.
Situated below (I believe) Motel Caribe, it is the first store my Mother and I walked into. She saw something she was *sorta* interested in but wasn't really sure if she liked it enough to buy it. But we figure if the price was right, then we might just get it. So, she takes it to a salesperson and simply asked, "Cuantos menos?" (as advised by our tour guide.)
Immediately, salesperson's response (with absolute arrogance) was "I don't play price bargaining games!" She followed it with mumbles of what sounded like angry junk words runnin' out her mouth. We couldn't understand what she was saying given Spanish isn't our primary language, but the intonation pretty much gave way to our own (and most likely correct) assumptions.
My Mom isn't one to take crap from anyone, so she threw the item back on some random table (it wasn't anything that would or could break anything) and said, "I was just asking! Never mind, then!"
We immediately stormed outta there.
This is a tourist area, right? And these types of businesses thrive on tourists and customers like us. That specific worker must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed, or someone must have peed on her meal, but attitude like that is going to destroy any kind of business.
They have no Yelp page, but the disrespect made me huffy-puffy enough to request a vendor add so I can properly alert fellow Yelpers and other customers on how this store deal with clientele. And talk about horrible timing: this happened in the midst of celebrating my Mom's 70th birthday weekend. The experience - albeit brief - was disgusting. Their front line is a complete disgrace.
It really is their loss. Clearly this worker forgot her store isn't the only one availed for us shopping tourists. As expected, we spent way over our budget on things we really didn't need from many other stores. Mom wanted to go back to this place and pull a "Pretty Woman" scene and show them all the stuff our entire family got elsewhere. (We opted against it since it simply wasn't worth the trouble.) We told our tour/bus mates about it and they said we should have gone back and done just that! (They're a funny bunch, for sure.) They also asked the name of the store so they can tell their own peeps about it.
There are future Ensenada visits, absolutely, and this spot has undoubtedly made it on my "do NOT go here" list. My tip to whoever reading this is to do the same.
