The Made in Michigan Store - Coasters with a distinct Michigan twist.

The Made in Michigan Store

Celebrating Michigan through and through…read more Overall, this is a super cute gift shop that differs from the glut of touristy t-shirt & souvenir shops dominating the main drag in Mackinaw City. I came across this Made in Michigan shop, located in the Mackinaw Crossings outdoor mall, while on vacation at the end of the summer as I was shopping for something more unique, something that didn't scream "you've just bought a tacky souvenir at a tourist trap." After looking around for a few minutes, I could tell there was nothing tacky or "tourist trap" about this shop. Sure, they sold some t-shirts with a distinct Michigan feel (better quality than most of the local t-shirt shops dotting the street), but beyond that there were hand carved wood chopping boards shaped like the Michigan mitten, seasonings, dressings and jams all produced in Michigan kitchens, unique jewelry, artwork and toss pillows in a nautical theme, clearly a nod to Michigan's "Great Lakes" heritage, and plenty of DIY/upcycled home decor, including old Michigan license plates turned into wall hangings. True to its name, everything sold in this store is 100% Michigan made, be it artwork, pottery, glassware, home decor/crafts, jewelry, candles, soaps, clothing, food items and more. In other words, if they sell it, it was made in Michigan. I liked not only the concept, but the execution as well. This store did more than just pay lip service to the idea of selling only Michigan-made products by local artisans. It delivered on all counts, including quality, selection and price. Despite being a gift shop in a popular Upper Michigan tourist town and selling only handmade products made by some of Michigan's finest crafters, artists, etc (not a single commercial/big box retail item is sold in this shop), the prices were quite affordable, surprisingly low, in fact. Truthfully, I expected the prices to be much higher and I would have gladly paid for such high quality, original pieces, though I was secretly jumping for joy at how decent the price point on most things were. I picked up a dainty "upcycled DIY" necklace for myself for $18, some homegrown jam, fridge magnets (about $2 apiece), and a limited edition print (by a fairly well-known Northern Michigan artist). When all was said and done, I dropped less than $80. It's hard to spend under that just walking into any gift shop in Mackinaw City without buying anything more than a cheap t-shirt and some fudge. In my opinion, it was money well-spent. I believe there is an official Made in Michigan Store "sister" location in Grand Rapids that is open year-round that sells a very similar product line as well, based on what the salesperson at the register told me as she was wrapping up my items.

A Heartwarming Stop at The Cross Village Gift Shop (I believe called Peninsulas now) - A Must-Visit…read moreon the Tunnel of Trees While riding the Tunnel of Trees on a Great Lakes motorcycle trip with a couple of friends, we made a planned stop at The Cross Village Gift Shop to grab a patch and a T-shirt to remember the ride. It was about 9:45 AM when we pulled up--only to find out they didn't open until 11. We were on a tight schedule and couldn't wait around. Just as we were about to leave, the owner came out the back door walking her dog, Chester. She greeted us warmly and explained they weren't open yet, but asked if we'd be in the area later. When we told her we wouldn't be able to return, she did something truly generous--she opened the shop early just for us. This also meant changing Chester's morning routine, where he usually walks to the post office to "get his mail"--which we learned is code for a treat from the mailman. Still, she welcomed us in, let us browse, and made sure we left with what we came for. It was such a simple act of kindness, but it stuck with us. The Cross Village Gift Shop isn't just a place to grab souvenirs--it's a place full of character, warmth, and heart. If you're anywhere near Cross Village or riding the Tunnel of Trees, make it a point to stop by. Support this small business. Meet Chester. You won't forget the experience.

Had the absolute pleasure to visit Peninsulas nestled in charming Cross Village, and I have to say:…read moreit was truly such a great retail experience that I would go out of my way just to visit again. The merchandise is not the usual stuff you find in the local souvenir shops, but curated with local/regional delights from many local businesses and artisans. You will find something amazing to commemorate a trip Up North. Outstanding service is the next thing that really stood out to me during my two visits to the shop. The shopkeepers are kind and inviting, and are the very definition of "Midwest nice." I could've spent an hour chatting with the saleswoman or the gentleman (who was either the owner or related to the owner). The whole shopping experience was so wonderful, I just had to write a review. If you're ever in the area or nearby, Peninsulas should be a destination.

This shop, Little Luxuries, is appropriately named. Lots of little luxuries around the store: cute…read moretoys and baby items, locally made lotions and oils, Mackinac t-shirts, fun stationery, Michigan wines and other things you probably don't need but you certainly want. One cool thing is that they have a shelf full of canned beer loosies that you can pick and choose to make your own six-pack. A lot of the beers are local to Michigan or the Midwest, which is neat. I love that this store focuses on local things, even with their beverages. There aren't too many stores on Main Street where you can get a bottle of wine or beers to go, but this is one place. When I visited, beer and wine was 25% off! Yay for discount alcohol. Little Luxuries would be a great place to stop in and find a souvenir to take home. They have so many Mackinac Island-related things in the store, so you're bound to find a nice little tchotchke or memento to bring home to remember your time on the island.

I recently got a Mackinac themed spoon rest and a Mackinac Island art print for a Mackinac themed shelf for my house (How many times can I say Mackinac in this review -- ha!) Little Luxuries also has a large selection of cards, wine, magnets, stickers, handbags and clothing. The space is filled with so many items. The employees are also kind, welcoming and always willing to help you find the perfect gift. Little Luxuries also has an online store that is open 24/7. Shipping is relatively quick and if you sign up for emails, they send out coupons and deals periodically. Awesome!
