The first crux of this climb is the trailhead. It's in a neighborhood and there is some controversy regarding the legality of where to park for this trail. Most folks that live up here seem pretty cool so don't be a dumbass and park awkwardly or leave any litter of any kind. (NOT EVEN ORANGE PEELS) The small easement you park on can fit maybe only 4 cars. Be polite, park tight.
This is a semi-difficult hike in the summer. Probably a step up from something like O'Malley Peak. It's about 10-11 miles roundtrip.
I went up via the "Dragon Tail" ridge which is an aesthetically awesome way to ascend the peak. You are on a spiny ridge for most of the hike/climb. The ridge is punctuated with rock spires and pillars ("gendarmes" in fancy climber jargon...fun fact: this word also apparently means an armed French police officer)
On the summer I imagine it's a fun scramble.
With snow on it, I would not attempt unless you know your way around an ice axe and crampons. I would guess the ridge is snow free by mid-may.
There's a section where I had to leave the ridge and side-hill on the south slopes. The snow was like wet cement, and pits-deep, it was miserable! Once I got back on the ridge, things got much better.
I saw numerous Dall Sheep on the way up and the summit views were incredible, despite the weather only being OK.
Great hike if you're looking for a long day hike to do in the summer. The area ("Ram Valley") is not explored anywhere near as much as the other areas in the Anchorage Bowl. You won't see many (if any) other people. read more
