The Cumbernauld Theatre is a good venue for what and where it is.
From the outside it looks like a caravan, (no kidding), but inside, it opens up to reveal foyer, bar, and of course, theatre itself.
The actual theatre venue is a bit of a shocker. Upon entering, you're not on the ground floor the way you'd expect to be in other theatres. Nope, you're on the top floor. Stadium seating abounds, and the stage is below you.
I can't imagine what it's like to be a performer in a set up like that...there is literally nowhere to hide.
I go back and forth on whether or not I like this set up, and have decided that I don't like it. It's akin to where you'd sit if you were at the ice capades, or a hockey match. It's very difficult to register any emotion on an actor's face if you're looking at the top of his head.
Aside from that, the place is lovely. The wee bar is wee enough, but there are plenty of tables and space to move around. The staff are friendly in that small-town kind of way. All in all, you'll feel comfortable and not intimidated in the least. read more
