Cultivation Salon is located in downtown Sacramento. Typically I cannot stand downtown parking, but street parking here, has always been a breeze. I'm usually able to easily find a spot within a one-block radius. The salon itself is a breath of fresh air, filled with natural light and beautiful propagated plants. I've been coming to Ashley Markwell for the last two years for all of my hair needs, and she never disappoints. She listens attentively to my hair inspo and takes the extra time and care to bring my vision to life. Seeing her always feels very therapeutic, making the experience even more enjoyable. I was in need of a major TLC for my hair and luckily Ashley Rayne was able to fit me in as a new client. My sister referred her and seeing her work firsthand with my sister's hair I knew I was in good hands. Wasn't looking for a major hair color treatment, just a simple cut and overall color as I mentioned low maintenance is what I was seeking. Ashley really took the time to listen as I explained to her what I wanted and absolutely honed in on keeping my look low maintenance as I'm a new mom (time is limited) and doing something that wasn't breaking my wallet each visit. She chopped off all my previously dyed hair then gave some options for color treatment. What we went with was using a dark toner since I wanted to stick with my natural hair color. The dark toner would target my old blond yet not do as much damage per se to my virgin hair. That way if I decided to get some highlights or balayage in the near future the dark overall color wouldn't require as much time & money for me. Uhhh, yeah. Sign me up to look good while saving!!! Well, shucks. I tried Cultivation for the first time. I ended up with choppy, DIY-looking bangs that give toddler with a pair of scissors haircut vibe. To be clear, that wasn't the style I was going for. I'm not sure if the stylist is inexperienced, was rushed, or didn't notice, but my bangs are all over the place in length (notice the big ol' chunk missing in the middle) and lack some much needed blending. The rest of my cut is just fine - I can live with it. I called the salon a couple days later and left a voicemail (during business hours) asking if I could come back to get just my bangs touched up/blended by another stylist because I was unhappy with the results, but didn't get a return phone call. read more

First time here. I booked with Sierra to get a haircut and showed her a picture of what I wanted and described it. Her hair was cut into a shag very similar to what I was asking for so I felt good going in that she understood what I wanted. She proceeded to cut, dry, and style my hair with a ton of product without checking in with me at all about the cut. After the fact my hair did not look anything like what I had asked for and I had to ask that she go back through and add more layers. She did so but still not to the extent of what I was asking for, at all, but I felt like I couldn't ask her to go back in and keep changing it when she never asked for my input during the cut. My hair ended up looking more like the "before" side of the reference picture I showed than the "after." read more

Get a ballpark price for your hair service BEFORE you sit in the chair! This is totally my fault, but, I went to have my hair done by Thu at the cultivation salon. It was my first time and I wanted some highlights and lowlights and a cut/style. I will say that Thu is very friendly and personable and easy to talk to, but a bit slow. I was there from 9am to 2:30 pm. She did have another customer come in 3 hours in and worked on us both back and forth. When I went to pay, the price was 470.00! She said the color was 385 and the cut was 85.00. I was shocked to say the least. But, as I said earlier, my fault for not asking first. My hair looked good, but not $470 good! read more

First time at the salon and Sumin was the cruelest most unprofessional stylist I have ever had. I did speak to the receptionist after but she said the owner was with a client so I left feeling like I was just treated like I was less than human. I definitely wasn't treated like the other guests from the get go. I felt very rushed and brushed off. My clue that she truly didn't care was during shampooing. I asked her if she had any natural shampoos as I had been in a cancer healing for the past several years and was trying to stay away from too many chemicals. She said coldly they all had chemicals and started washing without further discussion. There weee two brands she said they used and I asked which one she used, and she said the brand name, not giving any indication of care or to even check if one was less chemical laden. I let it go. Then on discussing a hair style I originally wanted an a-line bob, shorter on the back and longer in the front as I'd had a great cut like that in the past. When she put her hand in the back to show the length, I asked if there would be an a line silhouette because it seemed like almost the length in the front. She said yes but if I wanted to make it more drastic I couldn't tie it back. I asked her if she wouldn't mind showing me a picture of the two different styles just to be sure we were on the same page. She said I could look at her instagram and then looked at her watch like she was in a hurry, so I decided to just trust her with the bob she suggested which was less drastic. When she was done cutting there was no a-line at all, it looked the same length all the way around, like a simple cut from Supercuts or something. I told her I didn't really like it and this is when she got defensive and put it all on me and said she didn't know what I wanted instead of trying to fix it. I did say I asked for pictures and she didn't seem to want to show me. She kept saying it was me not communicating and when I tried to speak, she said, "can you let me speak in an angry demeaning tone"Then she said, "I think you should leave" and kicked me out with wet hair. Very unkind. No haircut is worth that treatment. The sad part is it was my first haircut in a very long time due to Covid and other health stuff and I didn't expect to be treated worse than a dog I did see all the other ladies smiling and with hot teas from their tea station. She never offered anything except blame for me being honest that I didn't like the cut. It was truly a sad experience for me, one that should have felt pampering read more

She helped me understand what color I might be able to achieve after all the years of box dying my hair black. I haven't used much black hair dye on too much more than my roots of my hair for the past year and was surprised at how good my hair lifted to a lighter color. I love the brown color Ashley put in it and that she cut the end and did super long layers so I can keep most of my length. My hair feels softer and healthy after going to her.
