After dinner across the street, we stopped by this little bakery in Goderich. They were just about to close, so the selection was a bit limited, but we still managed to grab a mix of treats -- cookies, lemon bars, and a few other goodies. Prices were very reasonable. Back at the hotel, we tried everything and honestly, every single item was delicious. The cookies were especially good -- we picked several kinds, and my son loved them so much he wanted to go back the next day just to buy a whole box. Was reading about places to stop along hwy 21 in Ontario, Canada and this place just kept popping up. Every review I read was great, so I had to try it for myself. Hidden gem. Huron County's best. If you haven't been here, stop what you are doing and head to this place immediately. On second thought, maybe you better not, because it's a Saturday morning as I write this and it's also the summertime, so chances are the cream puffs are sold out already. All kidding aside, this is a hot spot for locals and cottagers alike. This bakery really does have world famous cream puffs. They are unlike any other donut I've ever seen or tried. Apparently in the summer months they make 10,000 a week. That's a lot of donuts for a small town. Make sure you eat them fresh. I've tried carting them back to Toronto for friends to try, and they just don't hold up. It was fine, though don't quite get the hype. The tarts were outstanding (homemade in the best possible way: freshly baked, tasting of care and love). The donuts and cookies though were just ok (homemade in the meh type of way: something you feel you can make yourself). Price overall was good (less than a dollar for each item), though that wouldn't be enough to keep me coming back for more. One of Goderich's favourite destinations; I had seen the lineup on a Labour weekend Saturday morning stretch to the outside of the bakery and had to check it out. Inside you can see the cream puffs displayed on the shelf behind the counters, with bread and other pastries and souvenirs on display in a rack that the lineup wraps around. The cream puffs are fried 'donuts', cut open, and stuffed with a sweet cream and topped off with icing sugar. I managed to eat 2-3 everyday until I ran out. read more

Drove into Goderich specifically for the cream puffs on a friend's recommendation, and oh my, they didn't disappoint. Got a dozen to bring back to my family as a treat. Maybe I'm tainted by bigger cities, but the prices are ridiculously cheap. We walked away with a big bag of baked loot for under ten bucks. I never thought a cream puff would be something so memorable. And the people that work there are adorable sweethearts. Only thing is that they could tone it down on the kitschy branded t-shirts, hats, and mugs to make room for more cream puffs. Apparently the place has a lineup out the door and weekends, and even runs out of the puffs sometimes, so get there bright and early if you need your pastry fix. read more

Came here because of the reputation. Lined up out the door on Saturday around 11am. These are nothing like any cream puff I've ever tried. The dough is dense and rich, filled with perfectly sweetened cream. Honestly amazing. A mandatory stop when at the cottage. I'm the third generation to shop here. Famous cream puffs! Prices are unbelievable. Picked up a dozen cream puffs, half dozen cherry icebox cookies, 1/2 dozen mixed (orange twist, Boston cream, honey dipped, chocolate chip) all for less than twenty bucks! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME, MONEY, OR EFFORTS... DESERVES 0 STARS I'm not sure about you, but I'm not psychic and can't visualize if their open sign is blinking from my house an hour and 45 minutes away... so instead I check online to see what their hours are! How sensible, right?! Don't be fooled... Culbert's Bakery can't bother to update their business hours - Google says they close at 5:30, Maps says 6:00PM. We show up at the store at 5:05PM (after driving for an hour and 45 minutes) and stand in line with about 4 other people outside who are waiting to get in. A customer leaving the store is the one who tells everyone in line that they're closed. Everyone in line is in the same boat - they're under the impression they were open, because of their online hours. Despite the people standing outside their door, they don't bother to come and explain that they're closed for the day. They glare at the customers through the windows, until eventually everyone disperses. No apologies, no being human and seeing why all the people outside might be there. They are happy to rudely turn people away. They will not give you one second of their time or appreciation. In fact, they'll pretend like you don't exist, or treat you like you're some stray animal in who will leave them alone if you ignore them long enough. I can't and will never give a place like this my money - they don't deserve a penny. And I won't worry about it, because they'll sink their own boat eventually anyways. read more
