There are around 10 Balti restaurants closer to our home but the journey is well worth it. The owner is a master at 'customer care' and really wants you to enjoy his food. You start your meal with complimentary papadums with pickles. Starters are many but my favourite is Tandoori mixed grill. For first timers, I would strongly recommend you asking to speak to the owner, who will be glad to spend time with you, discussing what dishes meet with your taste. He will go out of his way to meet your requirements and is quite prepared to move away from the menu by 'adding or taking away' ingredients. It is common for him to offer you a visit to his kitchens where he is proud to introduce you to the chefs and show you the food being prepared. (He is very very busy on Friday and Saturday nights and cannot spare as much time as a week night) There is a great selection of main courses but ask about the specials. If you are someone who enjoys taste, flavour, authenticity and you take a little time, you will love this restaurant !! The main is followed by complimentary coffees. My wife and I are regular visitors and book in advance to secure ourselves a booth (for privacy and intamacy). We have a great meal, we leave full, content and the bill is less than a three course meal for one in most retaurants.

However last Saturday I picked up the courage and decided to give it a go purely because I wanted somewhere close to the leisure centre where I had to drop off & pick up our daughter within an hour & a half. Up the long narrow stairs my wife & I found a clean and freshly decorated restaurant. It is perhaps a little cold with its painted plaster walls and laminate floor and suggest a few soft furnishings wouldn't go amiss. It was early, 6.00pm on a warm evening and I was surprised to see three other tables occupied, a good sign so early. The staff seemed genuinely pleased to see us, they made us welcome and were eager to please. Unusually the TS is licensed but you are welcome to take your own although I'm not sure this was meant to incl a 2l bottle of lemonade as I noticed on one table. There's plenty to choose from on the menu, overall the prices are very reasonable but the specials although tempting may be a fraction overpriced The popadoms and selection of dips were better than average with our starters of onion bhaji & veg pakora arriving almost before we had finished them. Both were very good nicely spiced with a fresh & varied side salad. The main courses also arrived promptly. The chicken tikka Rajastani to which I added spinach was very good, hot and tasty. My wife enjoyed her chicken tikka tawa, although it wasn't sizzling as often served. In taste it was similar to a mild version of the Rajastani. One criticism is that the chicken tikka in both dishes was on the dry side which bothered my wife more than me. The garlic fried rice and garlic nan were both very good but the portion of limp frozen chips was a bit meagre. Surprisingly we found room for a desert and shared a banana fritter with ice cream which was excellent. In my opinion 3 stars wouldn't have done it justice so I have given it 3.5 which gets rounded up. it would be a genuine 4 stars if they upped the decor, slowed the service slightly and addressed the issues with the chicken & chips. Don't be put off by the frankly naff name or entrance, it is worth a try.

Lately the restaurant has become more popular because of its good food, and because of this the quality has gone down a lot, you get less meat/veg in the portions, smaller portions, and the taste and service are nowhere near as good as they used to be as they rush to get you out of the restaurant as quickly as possible. The menu, well, we'd promised it was a quick bite but starters, mains sides and a forced down desert argued with that one (doggie bags for the left over mains were a life saver!). A range of unusual chefs specials suitable for both veggies and meat eaters alongside the standard brummie curry choices (dopiaza, rogan josh, tikka, bhuna etc...) meant we needed an extra 10 minutes to narrow it down from one of everything on the menu to what we actually wanted! As a sample menu example my choices consisted of: poppadums with mango chutney, mint yoghurt, lime pickle and tomato chilli mixed tikka starter for one Keema meatball curry with extra green chillies (just wow!) garlic pilau rice cheese and chilli naan and a pistachio kulfi to finish (only because we could, there was no room left at this point!) Cobra and Tiger beers were readily available alongside a small selection of spirits. A repeat trip may well be needed to sample the mango lassi here (I'm sure there will be no complaints if the rest of the experience is as good as this vist was)

Saturday night is my usual Balti night but this week I had to attend family birthday and as Friday…read morewas reserved for Xmas shopping, the only option was Sunday. I turned to the Express & Star for inspiration an there it was, an advert for the Dilshad Blackheath informing all that they had received 5* from Sandwell Council following their food hygiene inspection. This really is no mean feat and on the back of this, not forgetting their £7.95 Sunday Special Offer we decided to give it a go. It was a good start we got a parking space in the lay-by right outside their front door. Putting aside the Xmas decorations the first impressions inside are ok, the garish red, white & black chairs and décor is a bit in your face however it's not too off putting. The tables are finished with proper table linen and clean cutlery. We were offered the menu and then popadoms & glasses for our alcoholic drinks, the service was polite & attentive. Unsurprisingly it was quiet, say less than a quarter full and we could choose our table. Typically I'm moaning about the noise levels in most of my reviews. I'm not a killjoy but why do so many people think it is acceptable to shout at each other across a 3' table for all others to hear? Often made worse with accompanying expletives and raucous inane laughter. It was lovely to have a bit of calm. The Sunday Special consists of a choice from a set menu. It is a limited choice but still a reasonable selection that I guess would suit most. The jalfrezi & tawa were good for us so I didn't have to ask if they would allow minor deviations or if we could pay a little extra to upgrade. . The popadoms arrived promptly; they were unusually crispy and came with three nice sauces and onion salad. The very generously sized portion of two fresh onion bhajis was excellent, it contrasted with the less generous portion of sheek kebab which was also very good but no sizzler. Both came with a simple side salad. The main courses arrived after a respectable wait and very good they were too. Although my jalfrezi sauce was a little on the mild side for my taste, it was my fault, I should have asked for it to livened up however it did have some fresh chillies in it that did the same job. The wife heaped praise on her tawa and unusually for her finished it all off. The chicken tikka in both meals was very moist & tasty. The pillau rice and garlic nan were good too but the chunky yet crispy home style chips (extra charge) were truly excellent. OK, you don't go to an Indian for chips but credit where it is due, these were the best chips I have had in a very long time and they went really well with the curries. Also incl in the offer was a desert, I had a banana fritter and my wife had ice cream which we put together and then shared. The portions were a bit meagre however you can't complain at these prices. A floater coffee (extra charge) finished off a very good evening. The staff were pleasant enough but they didn't seem to engage with the customers, although I prefer this to a how is your meal every 5 minutes. Obviously the ambience is different on a Sunday night but for us it may well become the new Saturday night, especially at these prices and in the relaxed atmosphere.I think it could catch on. Just under 4* but rounded up.
