The…read moreSir Samuel Romilly was once my after-work local, where come 5 pm, the gin and tonics would flow like water. While it serves the usual pub grub like any other Wetherspoon's, what sets this establishment apart from the others is its unusual labyrinth-like layout. Evidently, The Sir Samuel Romilly previously stood as bank, and the room that was once the vault is now one of my favourite spots to hash out the day's events while enjoying a pint or two. The interior is a bit more opulent and grandiose than I'm used to, but it makes for a fine backdrop to an afternoon or evening session. I only remember one occasion where a woman kicked off, but other than that, it's a fairly quiet pub, with chipper staff behind the bar always ready with a bit of banter (when asked where cigarettes could be procured, the dude pouring pints simply looked up at us, shrugged and said, "The shop". Cheeky, but better than a po-faced mug, as far I'm concerned!

This pub is totally not my scene, it seems to have a 'local people' vibe to it and I see the regulars whenever I walk past so when I nipped in I did feel a little like I was intruding. Still, it's a decent pub with decent prices, anywhere with a bottle of wine for £7 is a win for me and if you were so inclined, they do serve food. Children are welcome (and I'm not keen on children) and the regularly screen sports and events as well as having entertainment on the weekends. I'm sure it's lovely, it's just not for me.

The childrens play area is disgustingly dirty - my kids came out black and smelling awful! Their brand new tights were so badly stained from all the dirt they were binned as not even a hot wash got it out! It smells of sick in there and gets dangerously overcrowded at peak times. Edited to add that lately, the bar service isn't all that great either. There's never enough staff on and there's always a looong wait at the bar.

I've heard brilliant rave reviews about The Dining Room and it looks fantastic. It's not one of the cheaper places in Barry but you certainly get what you pay for good food and great service in a beautiful setting. The atmosphere is just lovely. However, their vegetarian option isn't actually suitable for vegetarians (parmesan) and as they only have the one option, I haven't tried it yet. I have contacted them and awaiting a response so hopefully we will have an update soon. Edited to add that they know their only vegetarian option (labelled 'V') isn't suitable for vegetarians and will be working on a new menu when their head chef is back off annual leave. An update to their edit their new vegetarian option has pesto in it when i asked if the dish contains parmesan, they told me No parmesan in it, parmesan has got rennet in it traditionally from cows stomach I'm hoping that means the pesto is a vegetarian version. Still not tried it but hope to soon.
