Typically I'd wait in line for ~15 minutes depending on how big the crowd is before getting checked and then wait a little longer before actually getting a chair. The donation itself took about 45 minutes - an hour. The workers were very helpful and did a nice job sticking me.

When I was in high school, one of my friend's parent needed frequent transfusions. So in high school, we would go as a group to give blood once every month or two. At that time, the UC Hospital Blood Bank was open 24 hours a day. We would go after midnight and had a great time conversing and flirting with the night shift, filled with fun individuals who weren't that busy. The 24 hour schedule is no more, but it is a happy memory. I moved away, but visiting, I decided to give some blood! The center has clinics all over town. Clifton has limited days and hours. If you are healthy, make an appointment. Friends together are welcome. Park in the Goodman Garage you can enter off Highland. Free parking! They validate parking so you aren't paying for parking to donate blood. There is a bridge on the 3rd floor from the elevators in the SE corner of the garage to the blood bank building. At the end of the bridge is a dedicated elevator to the blood center. The blood collection is on the 4th floor. It has its own lobby, then a check in desk. After providing basic information, you answer some health history questions on a wireless tablet. Check in and questionnaire takes about 10-15 minutes. After a short wait, your blood pressure, temperature, pulse and iron content of your blood is checked. If all is OK, the prep staff codes all the collection items with bar codes for the lab. They have some comfortable chairs for the donation itself. After, they have not so healthy snacks, orange juice, apple juice, V8, diet & sugar lemon lime soda, cold water. It's a good idea to relax there for a few minutes. They have free WiFi. And in the snack area are some touching notes from blood donors and recipients. Improvements: substitute wave, jungle, bird sounds for the rock music background. It's there so no one overhears confidential patient information. Get bananas and some more healthy snacks. America has one of the cleanest and most volunteer-supported blood systems in the world! That's because of you, if you give blood!

I have donated many times and can say that its one of the easiest and generous things you can do for your fellow humans. The staff are friendly and the phelebotomists are skilled and will make the experience as quick and painless as possible. I typically donate what is called a "Double Red" and the benefit of this form of donation is that you get fluids that help your body recover faster than a more typical donation. The only negatives I have to mention are that if you do any foreign travel, you need to tell them what countries you have visited for the last three years. I travel a lot and ended up bringing a list so that I wouldn't forget a country. There are often giveaways such as free tshirts or tickets to a local sporting team. A few days later you can call an automated service that gives you your cholesterol reading. I also think they can validate parking, but I am not 100% sure about that. You might want to ask them when you call about your appointment. So, get over your fear of needles/blood/whatever and schedule an appointment stat!

Make sure you have everything you need before your first donation. You have to have your ID, proof…read moreof address, and your social security card. If you don't have the social security card, your social can be verified at the front desk. If you don't have your proof of address you can donate your first time without it, but you have to bring it your second time. Make sure you eat a big meal before you come because your first visit as a new donor takes 2.5-3 hours. You want something on your stomach while donating. The process goes like this: You sign in and have your identity verified, you watch a new donor video on the donation process, you're then taken to a private booth where your photo is taken and your profile is created and pay card is issued, you answer a bunch of health questions on the computer in the booth, you have your vital signs and weight taken in the booth, then you have a quick physical with a nurse in an office, then you go donate which takes 45 min to an hour. There can be A LOT OF WAITING in between each part of the process so be prepared. If you think you are waiting too long in between each part don't just sit there, SAY SOMETHING. Employees get VERY busy with regular donors while you are going through the new donor process. You can donate twice a week in a rolling seven day period. You have to wait at least 24 hours in between the two donations. The donor fees are always changing every few months so it's best to just call to ask what they are. It's worth it because you are literally helping save a life and getting compensated to do it.

The final results were relayed soon, later after my visit. I was happy to be welcomed in a new town for me, to again donate safely and in a nice facility. Like on my first visit, I was instructed to fill out the questionnaire via my phone. I then emailed the results to myself, which included a QR code that the staff scans to input my answers. Different this time, though, was the fact that I waited in the vestibule for staff to take my temperature before entering. And all staff wore masks, and people who donate are told to wear masks as well. After checking in, I was brought to a small office to go over a few other questions and have my finger pricked. I still wish they had a bigger room to do this in, that would still allow social distancing, but at least all involved wear masks. And then I was directed to a donation chair and gave blood. The staff are friendly and professional. And this is an easy way to give back in a meaningful way. I will be back in two months to do it again.

Their location is HUGE with a lot of staff. The machines were nice and it took little to no time setting the machines up by the staff and donating. Downsides: Like most places, they have an app. BUT, you have to schedule a time to donate. If you miss your time, you have to hope someone else misses their to take their place, or have to come back another day! Long drive all the way to Middletown. They have a child care center, where apparently you can drop off your kids while you donate?(just seems weird)

Every time I give blood I go to this location for several reasons:…read more 1. I know it's extremely clean. I see them cleaning after each donor at each station. The staff wears gloves and masks 2. They are so nice from start to finish. I get so nervous giving blood and tend to pass out, which is quite embarrassing. But the staff here never makes me feel bad, they are very supportive and calming. If they aren't overly busy they will spend the whole time talking to you and making toy laugh so you're distracted. 3. I love their snack and drink selection for after you Give blood 4. I tend to go when they're giving away something and I love my growing collection of Hoxworth stuff! I will be going here again soon for their St. Patrick's day blood drive. Save a life! Donate blood!
