I hesitantly told her, "Nick. Nick did this to me..." She went back to working on her computer with an almost sassy proclamation, "Wellllll NICK's cutting your hair as long as we live here." There's your 5 stars. Annnnd moving right along... I checked out some of the other reviews (always with a grain of salt) before coming in. Sure, there's a price jump between a Sports Clips next to a Wal-Mart versus a higher end men's barber shop downtown, but that should be a given - or at the very least inquired about prior to scheduling, getting a cut, and then going to pay if a few bucks more is an issue that would later be used as a ding on yelp. The price was fair and right in line with anywhere else I've been in other nice cities with similar quality. Good bar selection. I unfortunately scheduled my appointment too early to enjoy this, but was still tempted. Solid gesture though. The other guys were on first name basis with their barbers catching up and cheesin' in the seat, so clearly there is good consistency amongst all the stylists. The receptionist didn't answer the phone like I was the Pope, put on a face like she was in a church play, give me a big southern "howdy," or pull a fresh baked pie out of the oven upon my arrival, but it's a trendy barber shop. That's what I sought out and that's what I got. So, all reasonable expectations were met/exceeded.

I actually drive all the way from Alabama to come get a hair cut and a beard trim. Typically giving large tips because of the great service. Today my drive was delayed a few minutes because of July 4th traffic coming from an hour away, and also with it being a busy weekend it took a couple of extra minutes to find parking. I arrived exactly 10 minutes after my scheduled appointment time and was told I would have to reschedule because there was another appointment an hour after mine. I offered to shorten the appointment time and not get the beard done. My haircuts typically take about 25 minutes. No other explanation or reason was given. I have never heard of this policy from them and it very unfortunate that it had to be after driving over an hour in the middle of my workday to get a haircut. Wasn't a fan of the receptionist's customer service, and will sadly be finding a new place to get a cut.

I visited The Penton House Barbershop on a Friday just before date night for straight razor shave…read more The location is great on 9th Ave and very close to Bayfront. There is free street parking and the street is fairly low on traffic. The inside has a nice feel and the area I was in felt like a traditional American barbershop shop. It felt nice and comfortable and a place you can feel at ease. The chair was very comfortable and fit me well. Amanda greeted me at the front reception area with a smile and escorted me to the chair. We talked about the service and what she was going to do. She shaped up my side burns first, the my beard and mustache, and finally a little eyebrow touch up. The eyebrow trim was a nice touch and a first with a shave. She then moved on to the shave. A hot towel was used with normal warm foam and of course a straight razor. She went over my entire face with expert ease. After done she did another hot towel and a nice wood scented aftershave. I had no irritation at all. A quick look in the mirror and touch and it felt good. I returned home and asked my wife to check me out. She gave me the touch test and agreed it was a good shave. One thing to know is that Amanda does smoke. If you are hypersensitive to smoke smell it might off putting. It did not bother me, but it as noticeable. Overall solid shave and a great place to visit. I will likely return for another shave.

I showed him a picture of the style I wanted, and he not only did it justice but improved it to suit my head! I love a classic barbershop - the smells, the razor, the hot shaving cream. And the price was awesome, too. Other tour mates had negative stories about past experiences, but if this place was near my home it would easily be my go-to haircutter.

My brother had a great experience and a good looking haircut; I did not have the same experience. A few days after this, I wrote my original review (see the photos for reference). A day later my brother contacted the business and we received a refund for my bad haircut. There is nothing wrong with the business, or somebody training, but there's certainly something wrong with my hair, and it would be nice to know if somebody who is training is going to cut my hair. Maybe one day, when my hair grows back, I'll give them another shot.

Blake is a great guy to chat with and makes you feel comfortable. I was visiting for a straight razor shave. On the day I arrived Blake was a little behind schedule, but it did not bother me. A few minutes is not that big of deal after the work day. He greeted me at the waiting area and escorted me to his shop. The shave was really good. He started by trimming my sideburns and a little hair around my ears. He then shaped up my mustache and goatee. Next came a hot towel followed by the shave. Blake uses a gel type shaving cream instead of a lathering or foaming cream. This was a first with this product type and I was very pleased. Blake meticulously executed an amazing shave. He took great care to get all sections of my face. He then finished with a nice aftershave that felt very nice. I returned home after for the final test. My wife's feedback was "That was a very good shave." Blake is great. I'll be back for another one of his shaves.
