    I received a discount coupon ad for Kelley Electric in the mail. We had an outdoor lamp and outlet…read more(related) at a detached garage that were not working so I thought I would try them. I called them and explained the problem, and I made an appointment. When the technician arrived, I again explained what the problem was. My husband, who was traveling, had already removed the breaker panel cover and checked the individual breaker and power to that circuit at the electrical service in the detached garage. The Kelley tech, looked around the garage, asked to get into an apartment above the garage where the switch was for the outdoor lamp and outlet, and also asked to get into our main house to look around. I didn't really understand why but didn't over think it at the time of his request. He then asked if we could take a seat to "go over things". He proceeded to review a contract that listed 3 "solutions". Their recommended "1st solution" for a call about a single non-working outdoor lamp issue was $9,886! This was laughable. He went on to explain he completed a "10-point diagnostic" review of our garage, apartment, house and property, and created a list of things to fix in and around the property including replacing carbon dioxide and smoke alarms, adding smoke alarms, gfci for a washer, replacing service cable and meter, changing grounding, surge protection, and a 2-year "club membership", plus the requested lamppost and outlet work. Their "2nd solution" was a diagnostic, gfci for washer and replace carbon and smoke alarms, etc. for a total of $1866. Their "3rd solution" was described as diagnostic, new breaker, outdoor outlet gfci and cover replacement, which was listed at $1254 less my $150 coupon, so a total of $1104 plus a $69 service fee for a total of $1173. I had to sign a contract before he did the work. The contract also stated that I "hereby authorize you to proceed with the service for a minimum charge of $457" which I had to initial. This whole sit-down conversation and lengthy contract made me very uncomfortable. I am a stay-at-home mom and I have handled nearly all appointments that our household requires with many different companies over the last 25 years. This was by far the worst. It felt like a shady sales pitch and I felt taken advantage of. I made the mistake of signing for the 3rd solution. When he was done, he let me know that he replaced a breaker, changed out the outdoor outlet, and that there was no problem with the electric to the lamp on the post, we but we needed to replace the light fixture. He told me to buy a new fixture and call Kelley when it arrives and they will come out and install it. So, the only thing he did during the 1hr.+ at my home was assess my whole house and property for anything and everything I didn't ask them to do, give a sales pitch to me to try to get me to sign for thousands of dollars of unwanted work and an on-going "club membership charge", and replace a breaker and outlet and told us that the lamp I called them about didn't work because we needed a new fixture. I was charged a "down payment" of $722 for an hour or so at my house where much of the time was spent on things I didn't ask for or want. The remaining balance of $451 was from what we assume, for them to come back and install the light fixture on the top of the post once we purchase one. When my husband came back from his trip, he was flabbergasted at the cost for 1 hr. for one tech. with most of the time spent assessing both our main home and garage/apartment and trying to up-sell us on work we didn't want, and a small portion of the time diagnosing the issue we called about, a cheap outdoor GFCI outlet and a breaker they say they replaced. My husband called Kelley, and was told he needed to speak with a person by the name of Jason. When he reached him, Jason was defensive and trying to justify the company's approach. Jason eventually agreed to reduce the "down payment" from $722 to $572 after a couple unpleasant conversations. We canceled the first check and sent a check for $572 to their address on-line as they don't have an address on their contract or quote. We were then told that they never received the check and to resend one to their home address. I cancelled the first two checks (another expense of $35 per check), and hand delivered the third to the office. You be the judge, but we would say stay away from Kelley Electric.
