I recently visited the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park for a women's tennis…read moreclass hosted by a women's health organization and I was genuinely surprised by the facility. As someone who grew up in the area and went to school in College Park, I somehow had no idea this place even existed! Even though the facility is slated for renovations soon, it's still very nice in its current state. They have both indoor and outdoor courts, spacious locker rooms, and a really nice clubhouse area. The atmosphere felt active and welcoming, especially on a busy Saturday afternoon. The staff members assigned as our coaches for the day were also incredibly kind and patient as they helped us work on our form and learn the basics of tennis. As someone newer to the sport, I really appreciated how encouraging and approachable they were. I've recently picked up tennis as a hobby and have been exploring clubs in the area to potentially join, and JTCC is definitely high on my list now. My only small critique is that I wasn't able to speak with anyone at the front desk because it was so busy, and the website doesn't list membership pricing, so I'll have to call for more details. Still, overall I left really impressed and excited to come back!

It's a short drive from the DC area and definitely worth it. JTCC's facilities and team are top tier. A friend and I started level 1 tennis lessons with Coach Frank and had a blast. They currently have an offer where if you buy one group lesson package ($60) you get to bring a friend with you for free. My friend and I learned so much over the 3 weeks that we attended. They have various day and time options for you to choose from and there's an ample amount of parking. My friend I are now taking tennis 2 lessons once a week and we are obsessed. It's truly the best way to stay active, learn a new skill, hang out with friends and make new friends! If you end up signing up let me know what you think!!

If you want to be on a swim team, then I guess this is your way in, but to me it's just not worth it. Go to the Glenn Dale splash park, or one of the many other community facilities. They're in much better shape and the fees aren't eye-watering ($800 for 3 months and they don't open until noon even in the summer). It's really shameful the lack of information they provide to new members, and they don't offer day passes to look around before committing. If you want to bring a guest, they screen the address to ensure they're not a Bowie resident, which was really gross to me. The city should just buy this dinky pool up and open it to the community. Additionally, they don't do background checks on new members, which seems like a no-brainer for something you're paying so much for and have your kids hanging out at. During one swimming session, I noticed a man sitting near the pool filming people on his phone. He wasn't there with anyone (we left at the same time) and he didn't swim. And the place is entirely run by high school kids -- I never once saw an adult outside of the manager's office.

Outstanding Swim Team. Outstanding lifeguards who keep it safe and fun (my child is autistic and…read morethere's no constant whistles going off). The swim team is home to two former Olympic Swimmers with one serving as a current coach. The team is one of the best for summer pool leagues in PG and Montgomery county with solid core group of swimmers and supportive families.

I love that my kids can just walk up to the neighborhood court by themselves and get a private lesson. (We just paid $10 more per lesson to add a child.) Classes would have been cheaper, but I couldn't find any near us at convenient times. Now we get to schedule our lesson when we are free (although we have been sticking with a pretty regular time of Sunday mornings). Private lessons are definitely more expensive than classes, but I've heard that instructors can run $50-100 per hour, so we feel that we are getting a pretty good deal. My kids really look forward to their lesson, and were sad at the thought of suspending lessons during winter. Their instructor, Jen, is very kind, patient, and thorough with working on all the different strokes and skills. This program has been a great solution for us because of the convenience and flexibility, as well as the low-key nature and special attention of private lessons.
