For a chess player (as I am), this is the coolest shop.  The friendly and laid back owners are the…read morehusband and wife team of Tom and Marguerite Paravola.  There aren't a lot of brick and mortar chess shops like this in the entire country and they have been at it here in Elmhurst for 20+ years.  It was a total blast to look, feel, and touch the various chess pieces and sets.  I ended up buying a magnetic wooden chess set and it was worth it to me to see and touch what I was buying.  Yes, you can buy sets via online shopping, but like clothes, I want to know what I'm really getting.  Yes, there is a modest premium for that but well worth it given the multitude of available choices.  Besides, while browsing, you get to chat it up with Tom who is a chess lover, and that's worth something too!  While browsing, I particularly liked the look and feel of some heavy metal pieces made in Italy, and I've never touched pieces that sturdy and heavy, and maybe one day I'll splurge the $400 for such a set of chess pieces.  They have limited hours as Tom actually still works another job!  Yet, he still has time to also run a free weekly Tuesday night casual chess meetup night in the neighborhood and all are welcome.  Keep it up, best wishes, and thank you!

They have a wide variety of items from fine jewelry to the most eclectic goods. From the outside you wouldn't expect it to be as large as it is, but it does span through multiple rooms. Many areas/rooms have themes like holiday, clearance, collectibles, household goods. It is very well organized. Store is pretty strict on "no large bag/backpack" policy but all employees were very friendly and respectful carrying it out. This place is not at all overpriced and you can certainly find some affordable gems without looking too hard.

Lombard Hobby will go above and beyond for you. Same for Hobbytown in Schaumburg. Keep your money and shop elsewhere. I'm genuine surprised at how many google reviews complain about their customer arrive and prices. You'd think if they shit on people, and get bad reviews, they would do better. Guess not. I typically try to preorder my comics online but haven't been able to do that in awhile (broke college student problems lol). That leaves me in an awkward position of trying to scramble to find single issues as they're coming out. I have a couple of comic book stores near me but I don't really like either of them and as a result I don't feel like driving twenty minutes. Sometimes if I'm having a hard time finding a comics, I will use their online sites to check inventory. I actually tried to have a pull list with one of them and literally gave them ten chances (not exaggerating). Stuff would be damaged, or show up several weeks late. And I'd have to remind them that I'd preordered a first printing. There's also an issue where some of the staff didn't know the differences in variant covers and would just give you whatever. No thanks, better to order online from a place with more experience and consistency. So that's what I do whenever I can order ahead. Unfortunately I have a little gap to fill now. I'm so glad Gem Comics was able to help me out with that! Seriously, Gem Comics must have excellent inventory! Because I found a few of the hard to find issues (Runaways miniseries 3+4, first printing of USM #19 and the C variant for issue #1 of Strange Tales) at the top of my list. In the past I've ordered indie stuff from them that I couldn't find elsewhere. For example, after borrowing an indie series called The Hunger and the Dusk at my local library, I knew that I wanted to add the single issues to my collection. Then I had a hard time finding those six issues. I remember that I ordered a couple of them from Gem Comics! When I say that those four issues I just recently ordered are hard to find, I mean that I checked with my two local stores first. I also checked Graham Crackers, and the big store I regularly use on the West Coast. Neither of them had these four issues that were really important to me. I also really appreciated the shipping- both the shipping options and the shipping speed. The shipping option I chose (Ground Advantage) is one dollar cheaper than the flat rate shipping offered by GCC and you get a tracking number. Then, like I said, there's also the incredible speed of this store. I received an email saying that my items had been prepared for shipment not even ten minutes after my order confirmation email had come through. Then my package was at the post office the next morning. This was extremely impressive to me! The West Coast store I typically use sometimes takes forever to get my package out... even if I email them a week or two in advance. Let's say that (for example), I emailed them on September 17th to tell them I'd like a package sent out in two weeks- including the 10/1 releases. They'd respond to me quickly and make it sound like it's no problem... but then my stuff wouldn't have actually started its journey until Sunday 10/5 or Monday 10/6. (I've only stayed at that store because all preorders are guaranteed to be high on the comic grading scale). I wish I had known about this store when I still lived in the Chicago area because I would've been excited to go check it out! If you're looking for something tricky, I'd highly suggest you consider ordering from their online store.

Try getting someone to answer the phone or return an email. Forget it. Try to figure out their website search. Doesn't work. Try to get them to take a pre-order for you. Forget it again. And if you stop in the store in person and they don't know you personally, they treat you like a potential shoplifter or an idiot that knows nothing. Or they just ignore you and refuse to help you or answer questions. It seems you have to be a part of their club. But they WILL take your money. I'm done with Lombard, there are a lot of other places to shop that have the same prices and are a lot more friendly.

Back in the 70's & 80's, my parents always used to buy these & we loved them! Then suddenly, they just disappeared from store shelves. Well, many years later, Lanzi's is BACK!!!! You can order them from the Uptown Shop. I just got a box in the mail. Flavor-wise it's REALLY CLOSE to the original (they had to reverse-engineer it because the recipe was lost after Elmo Lanzi passed on & production of the candy stopped). But man, it is pretty darn close & still tastes DELICIOUS!!!!

They had such a huge selection of puzzles and there were other toys as well but I didn't really care about them myself. I spent some time looking through most of the puzzles they had and found quite a few that I would love to have. While I was checking out the puzzles the gentleman working the store came up to tell me that the sale on the. puzzles didn't start till the next day but they had put all the signage out earlier that day. I found this kind of sad as there were quite a few people in the store clearly shopping the puzzles and looking to buy some for the buy one get one for 50% off. As I was trying to not buy anything for myself really this trip I may not make it back during the sale but this is one of the few stores in the mall that I could probably enjoy shopping at. The only downside was putting signage out early which is misleading to the customers and the gentleman himself was a bit gruff. Not really the type that I expect to find in a toy store.

Rashall is incredible with kids. Not once have either of our boys cried in her chair. She keeps them entertained, works efficiently, and somehow delivers a consistently great cut while doing it. What we really appreciate is how communicative she is--she talks us through what she's doing, explains what she thinks will work best, and makes us feel totally comfortable every step of the way. We genuinely love coming here. And honestly... if I had hair on my head, I'd let Rashall cut it without hesitation. Highly, highly recommend.
