I certainly wouldn't have noticed it would it not have been for a job interview being held here, and when my former manager said "Let's go to Browns for a coffee and a chat!" I did not think she meant this one! At first glance I thought its location would reflect in its quality - not so good. Wrong. It was totally lovely. All their sandwiches are handmade in front of you, with far more variety than at, say Caffe Nero, with fresh ingredients and it takes the staff no time to serve you. I've always had a good experience with staff who seem pleasant enough, but not necessarily over-enthused. Fillings range from egg mayo, tuna crunch, a variety of chicken styles, cheeses and so on. Their coffees and teas are a little more humble, but cheap and so I'm certainly not complaining. The other bonus is that I've always managed to grab a seat outside - although inside it is a little limited. Browns is now a regular coffee stop of mine when I'm in town, even if it's to while away a bit of time with a good book and one of their drinks, it's a pleasant experience all round.

But, as with all good quests, this one certainly had a pot of gold at the end. OK, maybe there wasn't actual gold, but there was some delicious food and a truly wonderful little café. They serve an array of fresh cooked meals for lunch and have a delicious list of sandwiches. I opted for the chorizo, pepperoni and mozzarella without the jalapenos and it was ruddy gorgeous. Perfectly generous amounts of all, deliciously stringy cheese and a crunchy but soft baguette. They've an array of lovely crisps and drinks, including organic choices such as Fentimen's Ginger Ale and so on, and the staff were utterly lovely. There is a wide selection of sandwiches and paninis averaging at £3.50 to take away. Granted, this is a bit dear, but the value comes when you eat in. They add two pounds onto the price which gets you a salad accompaniment which is a meal in itself! There is also a constantly rotating hot meal board with prices generally averaging at a fiver. Being of the opinion that when you work in an office (and sometimes even when you don't!), lunch should always be an event to break up the day I would always recommend this very personal establishment. Visit in the summer, and you might almost feel that you are on the continent rather than in Leeds!

It doesn't seem much bigger once you get inside, but this is unimportant as it is essentially a takeaway. Brod will basically make you anything you like, and I mean anything - it's kind of like the savoury version of its neighbour Shaky Jakes. I last ate here at lunchtime, and as such, plumped for a rather fancy chicken tikka sandwich, but this place is as good for breakfast sandwiches as it is lunchtime. They do the usual plethora of unhealthy English breakfast sandwiches (you know, bacon, sausage, egg, grease) and open at 7:30, meaning you have time to get one in on your way to work/early lecture. The only criticism I can think of is that the service is often quite slow, but Brod does usually pack out at lunchtimes so this is kind of expected. Anyone who wants confirmation of quality of Brod's sandwiches should be informed that this tiny independent business has managed to hold its own for years despite a Subway opening directly opposite.

I'm sorry bread, I still love you but I think we need to see other people (some of the time). While on a recent jaunt to Leeds for work, what I really wanted to do for lunch was go to either Friends of Ham or Bundobust, I decided to be sensible and leave that to a trip for pleasure rather than business. Brød was conveniently located near the Civic Hall where I'd spent the morning so I called in on my way back to the train station. I then spent the first fifteen minutes of my train journey staring wistfully at my lunch having decided that I couldn't eat it until midday. When I opened the box to take a snap it smelled delicious which was quite distressing. It tasted pretty good but not as amazing as it smelled which was a bit of a disappointment. The salad part was a bit sad, but it did take the edge off eating a box of cheese for lunch. And sadly there was no option for a raita or other yoghurty style dressing so it was undressed. There was plenty of paneer though so I can't complain too much. I guess next time I'll have to just get a sandwich as I don't think the salad box really panned out.

Whether it is because of the tropical ferns at the entrance, or the logo which has the (slight) appearance of a beach hut, I always have the stereotypical Hawaiian musical strains, resonating in my head. After hula-dancing my way into the shop, I often feel fatuous, hastily removing all flower garlands and the matching grass skirt. With shacks located in Huddersfield and Bradford, this Leeds branch is located within the Bridgewater Place development. Surrounded by offices, the shop is often busy at lunchtime. They do sell a selection of the obligatory paninis, with a list of combinations and the chance to construct your own creation. The gourmet range involves some tempting examples, and the parma ham, mushroom, mustard and smoked cheddar concoction, is especially delicious. There are a brilliant range of pasties at Panini Shack. I know what you're thinking, a pasty doesn't sound particularly Hawaiian. You are correct, but they are appetising nonetheless. I intend to sample the entire list, but always seem to order the lamb and mint pasty, which has never disappointed. The prices are fairly reasonable and there are meal deals available. Although the lure of the shop probably is not strong enough to make a dedicated trip from the centre of town, Panini Shack is a perfectly acceptable place to pick up a snack on the go. Situated just opposite the University steps of The Parkinson Building, it does get hoards of students and local professionals through the doors at peak times. It is also quite small so sitting in can be a problem in peak times. It is unfortunately non-wheelchair friendly as it is down a small flight of steps, with no lift. Great for when you're on the move and you want something real to eat at a good price (as opposed to plastic muffins or soggy sarnies). But if you can, avoid the lunch rush hour.

Although seating is a little cramped, on my visit I squeezed in at a table near the door to enjoy my extremely cheap latte - £1.30 no less! The space is freshly decorated and the atmosphere was fairly pleasant and buzzing whilst I was there. The service was swift and friendly and little pleasures, such as soya milk being offered as an alternative, make this thoughtful café a decent place to visit. All in all I was pretty impressed with the ensemble and will certainly be re-visiting for more than just a coffee sometime soon.
