Waiting in line
Christina R.

We took this cruise as an optional part of our bus tour and we are so happy we did. The cruise itself is a very short jaunt (30 min in, 30 min out) into the loch but it was pleasurable and we learned quite a few things we didn't know, so that made it worth it right there. I will say that a lot of people can fit on the boat but only half can be upstairs, outside of the boat, with the best views. Luckily, for us, we got into line fairly early and were able to snag seats up there. So if it's busy season and you want outside, I'd suggest getting into line early. Also, sit on the right hand side facing the captain (starboard). We sat on the left (port) and missed some wildlife. The guide on the boat will give you a lot of wildlife and area facts, factual history, as well as the legend of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. You can even take a pic with Nessie on the water on the left hand (port) side of the boat by the bridge.

We did this cruise as a part of a bus tour and it was really well done. The whole tour was smoothly run and an hour was the perfect amount of time to see the Loch. Our guide pointed out wildlife and provided interesting facts about the Loch, we never expected it to be so educational. Overall this was a very positive experience and for just an hour of your time it is well worth it for the views from the Loch!

Just being at Loch Ness is something anyone who visits Scotland should experience. However, this "cruise" that costs £14.50 (well, you get what you pay for) is a bit of a ripoff. First off, it's very crowded and the boats aren't big enough so don't count on getting that upper level seating for optimum views of the loch. Then there's the fact that the whole thing was less than an hour. You barely sail into the loch and hardly get to see it. I know it's a huge body of water but maybe extend it to at last 90 minutes. Only giving it three stars because it's Loch Friggin Ness! It's absolutely beautiful. I would try to find a better tour boat than this one because I did feel a tad cheated.

Here we go!

The most fun and best way to see the loch and some of the most fun you'll ever have! Definitely worth the time and money. Marcus, our captain was knowledgeable about the history and geography of the loch and Scotland as well as funny and entertaining. Highly recommend the fast boat ride. The suits provided keep you warm and dry and the ride was incredibly safe. Recommend pre-booking for the discount and to ensure a good seat.

Upon hitting major traffic in Fort William we knew we wouldn't make our scheduled noon tour on time.

We arrived and were greeted, they explained a wee bit about what was going to happen and what we might see. They then got us decked out in waterproof gear and life jackets. You then take a short walk down to the Harbour and get in the boat. The seats in the boat are like you are sitting on horse back. After two hours my bum felt a little sore. Then we were off, we passed by the massive rigs that are docked at Nigg and then went through the Souters on our search for dolphins. As the dolphins are wild there is a chance you won't see any so the first 40 minutes our eyes were searching the water. A seal popped up and splashed back in but no dolphins. The lady taking the tour had the loveliest relaxing voice and she told us things about the places we were passing, which was really interesting. She then told us they could see dolphins up ahead. You could see way in the distance some little splashes and movement in the water. We had to wait a little longer but then the show began, they were all around us jumping and splashing. We were lucky enough to see a mum and her calf. The calf was very active and jumping right out of the water, we were told that it was unusual to see such an active young calf. The experience was amazing and the scenery and views alone it was well worth it. I would highly recommend a visit. We were very lucky with the weather.

Much of the displays provided helpful historical context both of a supposed "monster" and sea creatures in the area that carried/carry cultural significance before their numbers started to dwindle due to poaching by humans and death by marine technology (like fishing nets and getting hit by motorized boats). Moving forward, scientists these days would probably just mutilate Nessie in the name of discovery if they found it. They would probably even say the original discovery was theirs - an attempt at erasing the voices and consistency of many reports by everyday people that have existed for decades before my writing this on Thursday 8 June 2023. Just kind of the flavor of science these days, take what everyday people have done and say it was science all along. In the name of fairness then, did/does this centre and exhibition really exist or will all those that visit the exhibit and say they did later be discredited... The exhibition is part of a larger centre. I found some fun items in a gift shop including a small book on the origin of the Clan Ogilvie for some family friends. Prices were good. Traffic picked up during my visit (arrived around 10:45 a.m. and departed about an hour later). There was an overflow/larger parking area past the smaller parking area by the entrance to the exhibit. I was fortunate to have a spot in the smaller area free up as I arrived. Though, both parking lots are relatively close to the centre.

There's plenty of info out there on how to book, routes, etc, so I won't go into that here. Tips I'll share: 1) book early - don't even think about trying to arrange this the night before. 2) don't do first class - while it's more comfy and usually our type of travel, we booked on one of the cars toward the back. That way you can see and video/snap pics of the front of the train as it goes over the viaduct. Makes you think lightening struck your forehead. 3) sit on the left side - if you're in the car facing to the front of the train, make sure your seat is on the left side. A much better view of the train going over the viaduct. 4) drink a beer or wine - even if it's 9:30 in the morning, which it was for us, have a brewskie...you're on vacation. 5) eat fast in Mallaig - don't spend a lot of time choosing restaurants. Pick a place the night before. When you arrive at Mallaig, run your happy bum to the restaurant you chose, order (and don't even try to get starters first then mains) and eat. You can take pics afterwards. Restaurants there are small, get slammed with each Twain's arrival, plus the local tourists who come by car. Hope this helps!
