I was never sure about what martial art i wanted to go for, but somehow Muay Thai came around & I fell in love with the art right away. Anyways, awesome place if you're seeking for a real one on one, hands on experience in becoming a true Muay Thai warrior.

I had been practicing Muay Thai for 2 yrs when I moved to the Irving area. Naturally one of the…read morefirst things I did once I settled down was to look up the best and closest Muay Thai gyms. Aiki Muay Thai was one of the closest so I decided to take the trial class. On arriving at the gym for my trial class, I noticed they kept the place clean. They had the usual gear available, Thai pads, body shields, spare gloves, clean wraps etc. They also had heavy bags, a speed bag and a boxing ring. There was a mix of people who were welcoming and willing to help out if I had any issues or questions. The Khru had a wealth of information to share and a keen sense of awareness of what was going on in his class. I trained at the gym for the next year before I had to relocate to another state. The classes were usually run by Khru John who brings an extensive experience in the martial arts that he shares with the class. The classes were well structured from warmups to working on techniques which he eventually tied together with combination strikes and defense. What I especially liked was that Khru John instills a respect for Muay Thai in all his students. Young and old, we all walk away with more respect and discipline. Khru John is a true martial artist who treats his members like family and gives us the tools to grow regardless of your experience level. All together I have trained at 6 different gyms under 8 different Khrus. Hands down Aiki Muay Thai gave me the best learning experience, workout and comradely. I would highly recommend Aiki Muay Thai.

I have a few years of martial arts training under my belt in many different arts from before my time at OKCD, and I gotta say that I've never felt more at home than I do at OKCD. Everyone who trains and teaches there LOVES karate and it's hard to miss. There isn't any kind of "we're better than everyone else" bravado and there aren't any cliques within the dojo. It's just training and exploring ideas and concepts within the curriculum. I truly believe that the culture of a school, or business for that matter, comes from the top and trickles down through the ranks. Because this dojo was founded by people who are passionate about martial arts and the sharing of the style they fell in love with, that mentality of just appreciating where you are and exploring the movements is prevalent throughout the entire school. I spent many years searching for a dojo to learn traditional Okinawan karate from, and I'm so thankful I found OKCD. Looking forward to many more years making new connections and meeting people who share a love for all things martial arts.

As life had different plans for me I was not able to test. At the very beginning, Sifu had us write a paper on a specific topic about kung fu. I laughed a bit inside because who writes papers in a kung fu class. Little did I know that I would reach far deeper into myself, not to come up with comical kung fu paper, but to discover more about myself. I told Sifu I wanted to write about Bruce Lee and his influences from Shaolin Kung Fu, Wing Chun and Tai Chi. Sifu paused and explained that Jeet Kun Do is a slight departure from traditional kung fu. He said if I could break each aspect down and explain it then I would have his blessing to write the paper. He pulled me aside after class when he handed back the papers and said that I have an introspective energy that could be put to good use in his class and to focus. Fast forward years and belts later and I still remember the energy I cultivated. I do not live anywhere close to this school anymore but what I would do to return! If you come to class expecting the instructors to show you forms and mimic then you're not in it for the right reason. Any circus animal can learn tricks. However, we are humans with mighty amounts of chi. Use it during class and practice and you will discover another you. I am from the class of Mr. Diaz and Mr. English. I ran into them at Chili's once in Addison and they progressed wonderfully. I think both of them were already instructors back then. It has definitely been a long time since I have seen them. This school comes highly recommended from me. Sifu treats everyone the same and so do his instructors. The classes are thorough and he explains a lot so pay attention. Well worth it to push you to become a better you!

Sifu Giatrakis is not only a very skilled martial artist, but he is also a great friend. I am thankful to have him as a teacher. You can also enroll in his college class at Brookhaven community college which is where I got started about 5-6 years ago. For more info visit the website www.wlions.com One more thing, I feel that I must comment on Kendra's comment. Sifu Giatrakis did not teach Choy Li Fut, Tai Chi, or Wing Chun back in 2003-2007. As a matter of fact the school was not even called White Lions of Shaolin. You were taught "Long fist" from a completely different system, which is not part of the Plum Blossom Federation. The system that you were taught moved to Plano several years ago.
