Prior to the pandemic, we would just walk in. After its pandemic reopening, the policy switched to appointment only to reduce crowding. I actually prefer a booked appointment since I dislike waiting, so this worked fine for my family. --COVID specific concern-- Right now, in October 2021, however, we have to find a new barbershop. Though Yelp still lists "masks required" and "staff wear masks" for Montserrat Barber Shop, this was no longer true when my husband went in for a cut last month. Some people in the shop wore masks, but it was clearly now optional as others were bare-faced. (I sincerely hope based upon vaccination status, but my husband did not ask this question.) If you are vaccinated and comfortable to be face-to-face with others indoors without masks, I still recommend this shop. If you are at very high risk for COVID-19 complications in spite of being vaccinated--like a member of our household--hold off on visiting Montserrat Barber Shop until this delta variant surge ends. Since Salem enacted a universal indoor mask mandate, we will search for a temporary hair salon option there (though I sincerely hate setting foot in Salem during the month of October.) From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave you feel like part of the family here. These guys are so damn friendly and very good at their trade. I was a walk in so I had roughly a 25 minute wait but during that time I watched the work each of the barbers did and to be honest, these guys are dope af. Each one of them nailed it with their customers. Francis cut my hair and to be honest, best cut I have had in a long time. I've been going here for a few years and I've never been dissatisfied with their work, they sometimes take a bit longer but their work is quality. Yesterday I went in for a cut, which came out great as usual. However, the guy cutting my hair was on his phone the entire time. It seemed like every few minutes I'd hear his phone go off and he'd go over to check it. I get being connected to your phone, but when you've got a customer, it's not the time nor the place. I will be back because these guys do fantastic work for a great price but I think customer service is something that needs to addressed with this particular barber.

The shop smelled of cigarettes and looked a bit shabby, but I decided to give it a chance, hoping the haircut would be good. My son showed Jay a photo of the style he wanted. Jay started by shaving the sides and back almost to the skin. My son politely said it was going too high, and Jay suddenly got upset, raised his voice, and said he's been doing this for 25 years and didn't like "that attitude." Then he told us to leave and refused to finish the haircut. We were both shocked but left right away. We don't get involved with these kinds of people and situations. My son was left with part of his head shaved and couldn't go anywhere looking like that, including to school the next day. Luckily, we found another barber right away who was able to fix it. For context, my son is very mellow. I'm down to earth and would never leave this review if my child was at fault. There was absolutely no reason for how we were treated. This was the worst customer service experience we've ever had.
