I somehow always forget that there's a Croutons on campus. But, the days that I remember are the best days. Croutons is probably one of the best places to get food on campus (in my opinion). Croutons is located on the UCSD Campus on the second floor of the Student Services Center. Parking sucks since it's on campus... you need a parking pass or you need to get a visitor parking (not worth it). On days I forget my lunch (like today), I like to order from here. I usually just call in my order and it's done within 10 minutes. Today I called in around 11:50AM and went to pick up my food around noon. I ordered the buffalo flatini and the santa fe salad (the two brown menu item combos). It came out to be around $9. Buffalo Flatini (4/5): had red onions, chicken, buffalo sauce, and mozzarella cheese on flat bread. At first, it seemed super small to me (because I usually order the chicken pesto sandwich), but it actually really filled me up. The flatini was super flavorful, chicken wasn't dry, and buffalo sauce wasn't salty. It was a bit messy to eat, but it was great and I definitely would order again. Santa Fe Salad (3/5): romaine, spring mix, red onions, corn, apples, gouda, cornbread croutons, and some ranch. I usually order the caesar salad, but I wanted to try something new. This salad was pretty decent but there was just too much cheese (I know, WHAT!) for me. It was pretty decent, but I'm not sure if I would order it again. My meal was definitely worth it and really hit the spot. I really liked that I could call in and pick it up because it saves me a lot of time. Aside from that, the food is alright. It's good, but it's not the best. The price range is typical... It's cheap, but it's expensive for what it is. I can't believe it took me almost 3 years to try this place! I love soup and salads but I just never took the time out to eat here. Anyway, this Croutons is relatively small and when it's busy, the line will go out the door. I ended up getting the combo meal which allows you to order specific salads and any small-sized soup for a low price. I got the Granny Smith Chicken Salad and the Tomato Basil Soup. The salad was topped with apples, chicken, cranberries, and croutons and was so tasty! There was a perfect amount of vinaigrette dressing on there and it just complemented the salad so well. Located on the campus of UCSD, this particular location can get really busy during the lunch hour. A lot of staff members go here for lunch and not too many students. I think it's because it's a little too pricey for what it is. The staff is efficient and friendly. The menu has a lot of salad options, panini options but not too many soup options. I just feel like it's just okay here. Anyhow, I ordered the pear and blue cheese salad with chicken. I ordered the larger size since I was going to share with the sister. In any case, chicken is an extra $2, so my lunch ended up costing me $9.99. It really is a large bowl of salad aka there's a lot of greenery for what it is. There was a little bit of blue cheese and a sprinkling of chicken. The dressing was very light, almost non-existent. I wish there was just a tad more than what they gave. While I enjoy Croutons there are some things I would change. One thing I would change is how quickly the food comes. Sometimes when you order in person it'll be quick but a couple of times when I have ordered in person it'll take 30 minutes for the food to be ready. When I went in today I ordered my food online in advance. It said online that my food would be ready at 11:20 but I actually didn't receive my food until 11:40, this is unfortunately not the first time this has happened to me even when ordering ahead online. If you're in a rush to get food then I wouldn't come here because the wait time is never really known. My favorite sandwich to get here is the Chicken Pesto Sandwich, the only thing I would change is the amount of pesto they give you. The famous chicken pesto panini was a huge disappointment. The pesto had very little pesto flavor and, despite looking very creamy (more like pale green Alfredo sauce than pesto) did little to alleviate the extreme dryness of the slices of chicken breast. The bread was poorly sliced and grilled - one slice was super thick and looked like they'd fried the outside of it to a hard crust, while the other slice was much thinner and wasn't grilled at all. I had to force myself to finish it because I hate wasting food, but there is no way I'm getting that again. There's a variety of other sandwiches and salads there, but none of them are worth it - like most of the on-campus, non-UCSD-affiliated restaurants, actually. I loveee this location! The staff is always smiling and courteous, and not to mention quick. When I'm in a rush, I call in ahead of time and they make your order within 10 minutes for pickup. One of the better campus food options at UCSD especially if you want something healthy. I love coming here for the salads. They have a wide variety of salads. I always get the half and half combo when I come here. The salad is definitely a decent size portion as a small, so I don't know how big it would be as a large. The half and half I think is a tad pricy, but the best deal if you want variety. It's a bummer that they upcharge $1.25 if you want any of the sandwiches or salads that they deem "special." My favorite salads are the mixed berry salad and the pear salad. The pear salad comes with blue cheese but I always sub it for feta and they have no problem doing that for me. The salads usually come with a variety of other toppings like nuts and stuff. I recently had the sundance salad. It was pretty good, but my least favorite so far. I don't think the dressing was as flavorful as in the other two. I liked how it came with mandarin and avocado though. The soups are pretty good here, but not "out of this world" special. I like the tomato basil soup and the chicken and wild rice soup. The sandwiches are what bring down Croutons to a 3 for me. They serve mostly pretty much only paninis and flatinis here. The flatini bread is almost pita like bread. I've had the pesto panini and both the barbecue and buffalo chicken flatinis. They were all pretty lackluster to me. The chicken on the pesto panini is pretty dry. The flatinis are reminiscent of something you'd get at Subway, Quiznos, or the freezer section of a grocery store. There just isn't a lot going on besides meat, cheese, and sauce. I'd rather have a sandwich packed with more fresh veggies, but the panini style here kind of limits the execution of that type of sandwich here. I ordered their Chicken Tortilla Soup. Actually, I sent someone to pick up a bowl for me. The price listed online for a bowl was $5.00, so I sent the person with $5.50, to cover tax. My runner came back with a cup, and told me that they had increased their price to $5.50 for a bowl, but have neglected to update their website to reflect the price hike! Second complaint... The soup was TERRIBLE. They use a diced chicken which has obviously been heavily washed with bleach (to kill food-borne viruses). Although I applaud the fact that they are aware of the risk of food-borne viruses, they should buy chicken that has not been "soaked" in bleach. The bleach taste leeches into the soup. While the Price center has a wide variety of options, they are almost all fast food. Croutons will cost you $10 for a giant sandwich (it's two entire paninis) or a single panini with your choice of salad or soup. The salads are packed with delicious ingredients (candied pecans, bleu cheese, pear slices, avocado, etc). The only option I think is poor value is the full-sized salad. It's not much larger than the small salad and you end up paying almost double compared to the price if you get the panini/salad deal. It's more expensive, but you get what you pay for. As for the sandwiches, the $6.95 chicken pesto panini is pretty bomb, with chicken, mozzarella, basil, and pesto mayonnaise. But I'm not a huge fan of chicken, so I'll always order the $7.95 Italian panini, with ham, salami, tomato, pepperoncini, provolone cheese, and garlic mayonnaise... YUM! I'm not a regular of Croutons. I've been here only a couple of times, but I must say that each visit has been pleasing. Apparently Croutons sells salads and soups with various types of (you guessed it) croutons. Cornbread croutons? Sure, why not. Additionally, they've got some good sandwiches. I recently enjoyed a barbecue chicken "flatini," which is a flatbread (you guessed again) panini. Score. The UCSD location is very convenient for me, since it's incredibly close to where I work, and the indoor seating is pretty cool with windows to look down upon all the buses passing by. There's also outdoor seating, which, while it is very cool, was almost done as a necessity because this place gets rather crowded during lunch time. The food? Pretty good lunch option. The prices? Even though this place has been open on campus for awhile, I've never visited until recently. Something about the name of this place made me steer away. Croutons usually imply that they would only sell salads... maybe soup as well. But I recently found out they also served sandwiches. Cool. So I ordered the Californian, a sandwich containing turkey, tomato, avocado, bacon, mayo, and swiss cheese. It was 6.95, plus 1.50 ish for a drink. EXPENSIVE. But when I got my sandwich, I could see why it was so expensive.... it was HUGE. I usually eat sandwiches that are half the size of their full sandwich, so I was pleasantly surprised that I got my money's worth :) Anyway, the sandwich was delicious. It was a panini style sandwich, so it was nice and warm, with yummy melted cheese, and fresh veggies and turkey. It was a really great sandwich. It even tastes great the next day for leftovers :) The seating area was clean, but a little small. Luckily there is lots of outdoor seating. It's also a nice quiet area away from all the students eating over in Price Center. It's a little too pricey for me to eat often, but I'd definitely love to try their other sandwiches as I had such a great experience with the Californian. The bread is also buttered, I believe, making it a bit oily (but not too much).The portions are also bigger than what I expected it to be when I first bought food here. I thought it was going to be the size of a regular sandwich, like those from the dining halls. I usually eat one half then save the other half for later. First time going today was not a bad experience. I chose the combo lunch deal. Since I was new I asked what they suggested. I went here during lunchtime between classes with my two friends, and luckily we came right before the lunch rush at 12 o clock. Since I was sort of put on the spot by the cashier and the line of people behind me, I defaulted instantly to the Sundance Salad, a salad that I was familiar with. I missed the huge sign that advertised their special deal and was sad because of that. Thankfully, my friends got the Marinara Chicken sandwich and the Italian Panini. The salad, while nice, could be easily reproduced anywhere: most likely canned tangerine oranges, sprinkles of feta, almonds, cranberries, and of course, spring mix. The salad to raspberry vinaigrette ratio did give the Sundance a bit of justice though- if dressing a salad is considered an art, I guess Crouton nailed it. I liked this vinaigrette as well since it didn't have a gummy texture nor was it overbearingly, coyly sweet- WHICH IS A PLUS! Oooooh my goodness, I totally regret not getting something with BREAD. Firstly, I nibbled a bit on friend A's Marinara Chicken, a supposed best seller. I suppose its best selling if one likes the really subtle and mild flavor. Like super mild. Border grandpa grandma food mild. But thats just my opinion. At least the bread had a bit of crunch to it. Then- oh~ - then I had the beautiful Italian Panini from friend B. UCSD peeps are always looking for something new since there aren't that many options on campus. I'm glad Karyn M and I arrived before noon, because there was seriously a line out the door. I couldn't tell if it seemed to be moving quickly or not. The staff is all super friendly, probably because they just opened and don't hate their lives yet. Very competent though. Menu is basically sandwiches and salads, but there is a good variety of salads. They offer the basics, cobb, caeser, etc and then have more novel salads with a heavy emphasis on fruit. It is a bit pricey, but you are getting fresh salads, not some flash fried, mystery meat burger. The regular sized salad is quite large, whereas the small is itty bitty, imo. Not a big deal on my part, but the thing that annoys me is that they forget the croutons for my soup!
