In my case, even though UMN grad medical insurance covered root canals, TDS initially did not bill my medical insurance, leaving me with a nearly $1,200 bill. The TDS office was extremely difficult to reach and largely dismissive of my concerns. I only got this resolved months later -- after repeated calls and emails with Boynton, TDS, and Blue Cross Blue Shield, and after filing complaints with the UMN Office of Student Health Benefits and the Minnesota Attorney General. The Office of Student Health Benefits and Boynton ultimately stepped in, but TDS did not assist in resolving the issue. My bill is now resolved, but the process was exhausting and entirely preventable.

Pre-authorization was not obtained. Alina demanded payment with no explanation on how to alleviate issue on approval and proper documentation for the 2nd crown. The first crown was presented as medically necessary, with the explanation that failure to proceed could result in a root canal which is why we proceeded. Given the importance of this treatment, the lack of clear communication, documentation and transparency around insurance appeals was particularly concerning. Overall, the process reflected poor communication, insufficient documentation and inadequate explanation regarding insurance handling and patient financial responsibility. I was very impressed. Dr. Ballin was matter of fact but kind, however, during my procedure I became a bit scared due to medical PTSD from an extended hospital stay because of being caught in a house fire. Something triggered that, and I began to mildly hyperventilate. Rather than speak kindly and softly to me to try to calm me down, Dr. Ballin became irritated and snapped at me to calm down and not hyperventilate. This did not help. When I went to see him for the wisdom tooth removal consult, totally unprompted, he told me, "Because of how your throat is built, you would still have sleep apnea even if you weren't so heavy." Thanks for the comment on my weight, sir, but pretty sure I did not ask for your opinion either on that or on sleep apnea. He lost my business after this. I now use OMS. If you're thin, he's a great oral surgeon, but if you're "heavy" I'd suggest avoiding his practice since he seems to be unable to keep his thoughts on appearance to himself.
