Just started with CrossFit and glad I did at CrossFit West Seattle. I began with Foundations: 3x hour-long intro sessions 1:1 with Andy. He was patient, taking me through the basics at a comfortable pace while ensuring correct form and tempo. It's a great, safe way to ease into things. CFWS will set it up on your schedule, usually over 4-5 days. The community has been very welcoming, both the coaches to the members. If you're a former athlete, or ex-armed forces or a cop or a firefighter, don't walk, run! and sign yourself up. You'll fit right in. If, on the other hand, you are a wimp and you think Pilates is hard and you faked having your period all throughout high school PE, this approach to fitness may not be for you. Yes, I too, have heard the inspirational stories of overweight housewives and 75 year old men who just had an open heart surgery, who walked into CrossFit and it changed their life. Good for them. Keep in mind that they're an exception, not a rule. CrossFit kicks serious ass. If you enjoy pain, feelings of inadequacy and can live with both, and you also thrive on personal failure, then by all means keep at it. I wouldn't discourage people who like that kind of thing. It just wasn't for me. I tried CrossFit for about three weeks. I went three or four times a week and every day told myself that it will get better and then I would tell people about the workout and they would respond with "are you crazy?" Which in general made me feel better, because I was reminded that not everyone thrives on pushing their body to absolute limits. Personally, I did not enjoy it. It made me cry. My body, I realized, prefers a nice step aerobics class, maybe a spin class, but mostly elliptical for about 30 minutes, while reading a magazine. But yeah, this place might work magic for some. The trainers here are real professionals and you'll definitely get more than enough personal attention, if, and only if, you can survive... A month. read more

I have to update the review for this gym. The reviews on Yelp right now are for when the other two coaches were the main programers for CF West Seattle. While I always enjoyed their program, they are now elsewhere and two other coaches, Rob and Eric, are the main guys now. Their programming is awesome. Class each day starts with a basic warm up followed by a more uptempo warmup designed with the following workout in mind. It's usually a mini Workout of the Day, or WOD. Sometimes afterwards we will do some kettlebell conditioning. Then the class goes over the WOD and the movements contained within. If there are any type of lifts, the movements are broken down and practiced. After that, we do the WOD, which is usually anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes. Then there is a cool down session that usually involves some type of skill work, like handstands, GHD situps, or rope climbs. All in all, if you are there for the cool down, you get in a solid hour of movement and skill work with the most intense contained in the WOD over a 20 minute-ish timespan. Everyone here now does the same workout. There are options to scale but everyone is performing the same movements. I won't lie, there is a lot of work on the bar so if you're not comfortable lifting weights, then Crossfit probably isn't your deal. Like I said, I was cool with the old coaches, but I can see how some probably felt intimidated or on the shorter WODs like they weren't in class for very long. Too long, didn't read, in short, if you've tried and didn't like, or haven't decided to try yet, come on in. It's a welcoming community and a great gym and I think you will be impressed! read more

This gym changed my life. One year ago, I was over 40 pounds heavier. In fact, I lost most of the 40 pounds in the first 6 months. When I walked in, I was scared, fat and out of shape. I had been going to to the YMCA for over a year, at least 3 times a week for typically 75 - 90 minutes. I never saw improvement. I never lost fat. I felt like I was going nowhere and spending a lot of time there. In West Seattle's CrossFit I was in and out of the gym way faster than any other the other gyms I have ever joined, which actually gave me MORE free time. I still eat and drink all my bad foods, just without the guilt now. I thought, "Let me get in a little better shape before I join a gym where the exercise looks hard." I wished they joined earlier, because the results were so fast. I thought I was going to be the only person with a BMI in the obese section of the doctor's chart. A lot of members start out really out of shape, but then you don't recognize them 6 months later. I have NEVER done any sports growing up. I have no coordination. I often don't know my lefts from my rights. I had back injuries and knee injuries. They work with each person's ability to do what they can, without making you look out of place from the rest of the group doing the work out. I was scared I wouldn't be able to keep up or people might look down on me. Nope, it turns out everyone uses different weights to suit their ability. Everyone is challenged, even the super fit people look like they are struggling because they are using heavier weights. People are really supportive and cheered me on. I started around January 28th, 2010 and without specifically training, I completed a marathon on June 25th, 2010. It is not the cheapest gym, but it is not a car payment like X-Gym. It is WAY cheaper than personal training I got at Bally's. It was more fun and I liked coming after a while. My husband says it is money well spent, because I am a happier person. I have more confidence in my life because of this gym. The staff is awesome, knowledgeable and even entertainingly funny sometimes. The unexpected bonus is the sense of community and friendships .....while doing the dreaded exercise thing. I think they have kids class when there is enough interest. read more

I started at this gym a year or so ago and really liked it. I hadn't been to other boxes before, so I didn't have much to compare it to. I've been told by both my doctor and my physical therapist that I shouldn't attend Crossfit anymore. I hurt my lower back really badly twice, which caused me to be out for about two months. My latest injury involved the trainer asking us to do cartwheels as part of our calisthenics. I came down really hard on my left knee, which caused my ACL repair to tear again. I spent three months in physical therapy, and while I'm feeling better, my knee is now back to where it was pre-surgery. Occasional buckling and pain. I'm looking at having the surgery again, which is pretty disconcerting. I think the problem with this box and others is that there are just too many people for the trainer to watch what you're doing. I hurt my lower back twice because I wasn't using proper form, and I wasn't using proper form because there were 15 or 20 people in the class. How can they possibly watch everyone? The movements are VERY difficult and the chance for injury is very high in my opinion. So right before I cartwheeled myself into misery, I paid Crossfit West Seattle 2 grand for a year worth of membership. I put the membership in hold, but eventually was told by my doctor that I shouldn't go back. I emailed Rob, the owner, asking if I could get my pro-rated money back, but he refused. I have a small business and offer my clients a discount if they for my services in advance. If they decide they don't want to use my service, I refund the portion of their money that they didn't use - and basically charge them the full amount they'd have paid without the retainer. Based on the training I received and the injuries I sustained, I would have expected Rob to be fair and return the portion of my membership I didn't use. He didn't. If you use this gym, I'd suggest being overly careful with your movements. Try not to be competitive with others and just do your workout. Work toward your own goals, not the trainer. read more

You have just stumbled upon Seattle's best gym. I am an athlete and a chiropractor who treats an injured population so I get to experience this facility from both ends of the performance spectrum: I personally train here and have reaped the rewards of what I think of as "professional athlete level" coaching. I competed in crossfit on my own before joining this facility and the difference is measurable. It's a bit of a cliche but ask anyone who trains there and regardless of their background you will undoubtedly hear: "I'm in the best shape of my life." On the other end of the spectrum are my injured and deconditioned patients who I refer to Crossfit West Seattle for training. The coaches have the ability to meet a person where they are and develop their skills at the appropriate pace. In the end we all reach the limits of our genetic potential. read more

Ok here it is.....I started running and training for marathons/half marathons a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but there was always something missing from my cross training. I was never getting stronger or faster in my running. Then my boyfriend joined CrossFit West Seattle and told me I needed to try it out.....but all I could think about was the stereotypical "crossfitters" I know...I know....don't judge a book by it's cover, but I did and I refused to try crossfit for months. So finally in March of 2014 I gave into my boyfriend's constant praise of the gym. So I signed up for the Foundations class and I have been going ever since!! I can't explain in words how much I LOVE this gym! There are a variety of coaches who give great feedback and are there to help you reach your goals no matter what level you are at. I even went through a major surgery and when I came back a month later the coaches were there to modify my workouts and make sure that I took it easy in all areas. They gave me confidence and strength and I don't know how much more I can thank them besides recommending this gym to EVERYONE! I am so thankful to find an amazing gym with an amazing community. I love coming in and seeing all ages, at all different levels. It is a great place to meet new people, learn more about fitness and health, get advice from experts, PR, have fun activities and birthday WOD's, be able to brush off bad days and smile on the good days! The absolute hardest thing to do with any CrossFit is walk in the door. It seems like it would be filled with ultra athletes who do crazy things - but that couldn't be further from the truth. I was 38. Worst shape of my life. Three kids, a bad diet, and just not doing anything took its toll. Then, I took that first step. I found a very competent and committed coaching staff, particularly the head trainer Zach Filer. I also found an extremely supportive group of people on a fitness journey. The sign at the door is both a motto and a reminder - "Leave your ego at the door". I've never once been intimidated. Never once felt inadequate. Rather, I love going to a place where everyone supports you whether you are having an awesome day or a bad one. It's a family of friends who take more pride in other's successes than their own. So, six months after walking into CF (again, in bad shape), I've completed two half marathons, a 5K with my son, and climbed to the summit of Rainier. I've lifted weights I have never been able to. I've sweated harder than I've ever sweated. I've also had "highs" like never before. None of this would have happened without the programs and the people of CrossFit West Seattle. Thanks to Crossfit West Seattle I am a stronger, healthier, and leaner person. At 43 I am in better shape and healthier then I was at 33. The flexibility of the number of workouts during the day make it easy for me to get to the gym at any part of the day and get a solid workout. Having a workout designed for all shapes and sized people make it a great atmosphere for all. The trainers do a great job with making sure you understand the movements and get them done right to be effective and benificial. I had a series of very strange experiences at CrossFit West Seattle and ultimately decided not to pursue a membership at their box (which is saying a lot since I'm committed to signing up somewhere in the next two weeks and I live just around the corner from them). I'm newish to CrossFit but had been going to NorCal CrossFit in the Bay Area for several months before moving up to Seattle -- NorCal has several (excellent!) locations and I did a lot of research on other locations before signing up, so I have a good sense of what's typical. Several things I knew I was looking for: 1) a box where I felt like I was learning and was part of the group even if I was doing things at scale rather than Rx, 2) a box that had good communications and systems (I like checking the WOD online the day before!), and 3) a box where people were friendly and upbeat (CrossFit is *hard* and feeling some camaraderie definitely helps!). I tried to visit CrossFit West Seattle back in June: I emailed and called them about visiting a class and got no response. I tried again when I moved up here in August, and same thing: email, phone call, and no response. Since I wanted to make sure the gym was still open, I ended up making up email addresses for the coaches (who were unlisted on their website) -- I felt bad about spamming everyone, but again, I'd made four attempts with their preferred methods of contact and heard absolutely zero (seems like a questionable business strategy). Ultimately, I was able to arrange to go visit a class -- I just wish I there had been a way to get the info before we got to contact attempt #5. I didn't know what the workout would be when I went -- most CrossFit gyms seem to post workouts the night before, which I really appreciate since I'm on the newer side (it's helpful to be able to watch videos to remind myself of the technique before going in). I was monitoring the CrossFit West Seattle blog for several weeks before I moved and saw that they were really inconsistent with updates (perhaps this was a sign?) so I didn't know what to expect. The class I visited was the Friday before Labor Day. It was tiny (which makes sense before a holiday weekend) -- it was just me, two others, the coach, and his brother. The warmup started with 15min of a gentle stretching circle (no joke -- I haven't experienced this in *any* other CrossFit setting). The coach spent most of that time talking to his brother and the others in the class were quiet (...so much for camaraderie?). When it was time for the WOD, the coach split us into two groups: the workout they put me in was an easy baseline (which seems fair since they didn't know anything about my skill level) but it didn't include anything technical and I got the impression that they saved most of the interesting lifts for their competition class, which is not what most people do. The coach started the clock and I finished the workout slower than I would have liked (in about eight minutes) and... that was it. I was dumbfounded. Again: 15min of gentle stretching and then an eight minute workout, and I was supposed to go home happy. Don't get me wrong: I love that CrossFit is intense and that workouts are short, but I'm used to being at the box for a full hour and getting really well warmed up with movements that prep me for the WOD, help me practice technique, etc. I usually feel like I'm working for the whole hour and that's what I pay for -- a full class with lots of coaching and good advice on how to scale things and improve, as well as that awesome, ass-kicking WOD at the end. I don't want to spend that much money just to get 23 minutes of some guy hanging out with his brother. The people were nice enough, but it just wasn't worth it. I've been working out in gyms and running off and on since I was a teenager, but always have trouble sticking with it - the gym gets boring, it's too rainy to run, etc. So I'd been looking for something that I could just goto every day or every few days, get a workout in, and leave. I was interested in trying out this Crossfit phenomenon last year, and found Crossfit West Seattle due to its proximity to my house. I called up for info about the gym, and was told "just come down any time to one of the group classes, join in and give it a shot. If you like it, sign up!" Pretty simple. My buddy and I did the first group session, and we were intrigued. It was a good 10-15min group stretch/warm-up followed by an intense workout with kettle bells and situps...unlike anything I'd done at a gym, but not like joining a sports team either. We were told that the WODs (workouts of the day) changed every day, and would always work a different setup of muscles or challenge you in a new way. And they absolutely do - the last thing I'm doing almost every night is checking the blog to see what they have in store for us the next morning...so much better than a traditional gym workout. The coaches/trainers are all friendly, helpful, and very motivational. Workouts are hard but you feel great afterward, and the entire day's WOD, including warming up, has you in and out within an hour - something that's crucial if you've got a busy schedule. I've never experienced anything quite like being a member of Crossfit West Seattle, my only regret is that I didn't sign up sooner. read more

This gym rocks! When I hit 50 last year I looked in the mirror and knew I needed to do something to get in better shape. I'd given up playing weekend football because I was getting injured too often, and without a reliable exercise routine I was starting to pack on a lot of weight. The problem was I hated gyms and the mind numbing routines. I wanted something fun and engaging otherwise I'd never stick with it. I went to the foundations classes at this crossfit gym and instantly knew I was in the right place. The classes are always different and challenging. Working out with the same group of people builds comradery. And the coaches are infinitely patient, teaching the fundamentals of proper technique while making sure I'm challenged but not so ambitious that I get into trouble. I've been going to the gym for 10 months now and I look and feel a lot better. I had knee surgery a couple years ago and I was worried all the jumping and squatting would be too hard on my joints. But after an initial adjustment period my knees feel better than ever and I feel 10 years younger! And most importantly I'm still going... which for me says a lot about this place. read more

After months of indecision, I finally signed up and went to my first foundations class, it was by far the best decision I have made in a long time! It is an amazing group of trainers and member that make this place so so so wonderful! There is always someone there to encourage and push you to get through whatever difficult WOD they throw at you. My only wish is that I hadn't waited so long to join. I've been a member of CFWS since June 2015. I walked in not knowing what to expect and being intimidated but I was immediately welcomed into the community. The coaches are extremely knowledgable and best of all, super nice, and have a great sense of humor. The atmosphere here is one that allows for all body types and ability levels. The coaches are great about providing alternate movements if you have injuries as well as providing stretches and exercises to strengthen that area. The community here is amazing and its what keeps me coming back. The men and women athletes here encourage each other to do their best. As an aside, I'm also 29 weeks pregnant and I've continued to do CF. The coaches have been extremely supportive of providing alternate movements when needed. The owner, Danielle has created a friendly and supportive environment that is also very family friendly. As a full time working parent, sometimes the only way to get in and get it done is to take my kids in with me. They love coming to the gym and they've really enjoyed the new Gen Nxt crossfit kids classes that started this summer. read more

This is an excellent program and a great gym. If you are even considering doing Crossfit, I recommend you give it a try. Crossfit West Seattle delivers where it really counts in a gym; it's clean, well-equipped, and has numerous daily classes that always start on time. Most important of all, the trainers are skilled, professional and good at working with people of all fitness levels. I played organized sports through high school, but going through my 20s, my exercise became more sporadic. I enjoyed working out, but I needed structure. This was a great program for me. The workouts vary widely but complement each other well. There are also benchmarks by which to measure your progress. Because it has a broad scope, the improvements you make can help with any sport physical activity you do. I agree with what other reviewers said about Crossfit West Seattle having a sense of community. It also has character, which is hard to explain. Some gyms make me feel like I'm walking into an office park in the exurbs. This is an enjoyable place to be, and I look forward to going there every day. read more

It finally took a couple months of my partner trying to get me to go to CrossFit before I decided to try it out. I am a marathon runner and I keep a pretty strict running program. I was hesitate to join because I didn't want to overtrain my body and lead to muscle fatigue. After a few months I soon realized that CrossFit was beneficial to my running regime. The workouts are very well programed and they focus on all aspects of the body, something that often runners neglect. I push just as much as my body can take, and the coaches here do a really good job of modifying any workouts for members depending on their level. There are days that I simply cannot do much heavy lifting, and the coaches are really helpful about what weight is appropriate for me and where I am at. The coaches take the time to know their members and they all know that running is my main focus and the respect that. Crossfit has added a different element to my running training and I am very grateful for that. There are so many crossfit boxes to choose from in the Seattle area so why CFWS. It is a top notch Crossfit box. Everyone is made to feel welcome no matter what athletic ability you have. The programming is awesome and can be scaled for everyone from beginners to games athletes. The coaches focus on proper technique and are extremely conscientious. The new owner and all the coaches want success for everyone no matter what your goals are. The best fitness decision I ever made. Very encouraging community of coaches and members for any age or ability level. Motivating but not intimidating, challenging but scalable, I get twice as much out of the workouts and myself than I could working out on my own, and it's feels like a bargain compared to training with a personal trainer. Enough variety to keep it interesting, but also consistent focus on core movements and lifts so you can focus on improving - getting better and stronger - and tracking your progress. I am a new member at CrossFit West Seattle and I could not be happier with my decision to join this gym. During the Foundation Classes (new member onboarding), my coach took her time to explain and show me correct form for lifts and was super encouraging. Now that I am starting to attend classes, the feeling of camaraderie and support is incredible. I am a former college athlete and have been out of the gym for almost 5 years. I can't tell you how awesome it feels to be a part of a team again. My favorite part about CFWS is that I am constantly challenging myself. During the workouts, the other athletes and coaches are inspiring and always positive - pushing you to keep it up! I have been doing crossfit for many years now. I tried both the West Seattle and SODO Crossfit and have been very unimpressed with the West Seattle location (I live midway between both). They are obviously uninterested in new members. I'm going to officcially make SODO my box regardless of the fact I will lose a little money on it. read more

I would give this place 4.5 stars if I could and here is why. I absolutely love it because the trainers are knowledgeable, helpful and pleasant. The gym is well equipped and centrally located. There are a million reasons to give this five stars except for the actual facility. It is too cramped for the amount of people that can be in there during a busy class, the locker rooms aren't terrible but they aren't great either, and they don't have a water fountain so you're out of luck without your own water vessel. For safety they should at least offer cups to go with their purifier. Other than those little issues, this is an extremely friendly and useful place to achieve your fitness goals regardless of ability. The reviews below saying that it was too hard for them is understandable, because there is only so far that you can scale certain exercises before you are doing a different program all together. read more
