Let me first say that I would give Crossfit Perpetua 4 stars - the reason I don't is down to cost. Crossfit in general is for some reason very expensive. As a crossfit gym (and I've only been a member of one) I've heard and believe that Crossfit Perpetua is a good one. This review is just intended for people that are thinking of trying crossfit. If you are already a member of a crossfit gym probably this review is less relevant.
My crossfit journey began with a free fitness test with the head of gym. It was probably about 20 minutes or so of various exercises. Rowing, pushups, squatting etc. And a 20 minute meeting which explained crossfit and the thinking behind it and the pricing. And it's explained that one of the reasons crossfit is expensive is because they have coaches following your progress and leading every class.
To join the gym, you had to sign up for a training session with one of the coaches which would teach you crossfit fundamentals. There were 10 sessions and if you wanted to do that on your own it was 600 euro or if you did it with someone else (they could help find someone) it was 400 euro. Pretty steep it has to be said.
I can see the need for the 10 sessions however. In class, movements are explained to remind you what to do but class is not really the time or the place to explain the basics. So if you view the cost of the fundamentals class as a "gym joining fee" it's just about manageable.
Also I don't think Perpetua is alone in charging this much for fundamentals. It's possibly the most expensive but probably not by a whole lot. Crossfit is expensive.
There were 10 sessions of about 45 minutes each and were a light warmup / flexiblity and some fundamentals movements. Not really that taxing. Expensive for what it was but I can see the need.
After you complete fundamentals you can join the gym. It's 200 euro a month if you take a 3 month contract or 165 euro a month if you take a 12 month contract. That's really a lot. On the cheapest option that's 1980 euro a year. For a regular person, that is an expensive gym,
For that you can schedule yourself for as many crossfit, strength and conditioning or olympic weightlifting classes as you like. All the classes are instructor led and are usually limited to a maximum of around 16 people. The classes are around an hour each. The crossfit classes begin with some warmup exercises, then there is a strength section and there is the WOD (workout of the day). If you want to find out more about crossfit exercises you can probably find that on youtube or google. I have to say crossfit it a lot of fun - it's hard but you can always "scale" the exerices to yourself. And the coaches are very good and will generally correct you if you are doing something wrong.
You are also assigned a coach - the same person that did your fundamentals. You are told during the very first session something along the lines of the coach is kind of your personal trainer, following your progress. I think this was probably the major disappointment with Perpetua - I think I was sold the promise that yes it's expensive but you are really going to get 1 on 1 attention. To be honest I never really heard anything from my coach unless they happened to be leading a class that I took. When I asked my coach about getting a program put together for me I was told sure - 60 euro for a personal training session and we can do it. So that's probably luck of the draw - maybe you will get lucky and get an awesome coach.
So should you try crossfit? That depends. It's a lot of fun and if you commit to it and to eating properly you can get results. But back to the reason that I only give 3 stars instead of 4 is that, like all crossfit gyms, it's crazy expensive. At a minimum it's 400 + 1980 = 2380 euro for your first years membership. which is an awful lot unless you are a pretty serious athlete or have a lot of disposable income. read more
