One rotten apple left on the tree
    Allison P.

I went on Oct. 3 which should be solidly in Apple season, right? Well, there were really no pickable apples, and I left with nothing. The only apples that were left were either way at the top of the tree (which they don't allow you to use apple pole pickers to get) or very tiny and sickly-looking. Many had a white color on them or were rotten. I saw one man literally climbing to get the apples (which they expressly say you can't do but I don't blame him). Parking situation was crazy. They don't have any kind of ticket/time-slot situation like many of the other orchards and farms are doing at this time, so maybe that's why they were mobbed and I had to park (at one of the worker's suggestion) in the woods on the side of their road. Ground apples were going for 50 cents a pound and tree apples for 1.00 a pound. It would have been great if I got some.

This past weekend we met up with some great friends and our group of 4 adults and 4 kids hit the orchards buckets in hand. There were plenty of other families enjoying the same activity and the weather was just perfect! The goal, apples - for pies, applesauce, apple jelly and whatever else we could think of doing with them over the upcoming week. We wandered through all sorts of apple selections, yellow delicious, red delicious, Rome and Braeburn....we loaded up two buckets of Rome and Braeburn and stopped to admire the herbs and pepper plants still bearing. Bonus, as we picked some of the last available chili and ancho peppers on the vine. The check out area boasts crates of pumpkins, gourds and a wide variety of squash you can add to your bags of goodies. We didn't see any of the cider, but hopefully we'll get some before the season is over.

Picked roughly 15 pounds of apples--took them home to wash off the clay!

I visited this farm with a few friends as a "COVID-Safe" autumn outing. We wore masks, and some of the other guests did too (it was a pretty mixed bag). We parked along the road, made a quick pitstop to the Harris Teeter across the street for cash (since this farm is cash-only) and restrooms, and then grabbed buckets from the staff who were seated underneath the tent at the beginning of the farm. The trees had quite a lot of apples, and we had such a fun time crunching through the tall grass to pick the most beautiful apples we could find. They had three or four varieties of apples (some red and some green). We weren't sure why the apples were dusty and white, but the staff members at the tent assured us that it was just clay--a trick to keep the bugs away. For nearly 15 pounds of apples, I paid just $14. I guess I got a little carried away! These apples cleaned up so beautifully, and I'm thrilled to start baking with them.

The entire farm is neglected and overrun with weeds. There are two blackberry patches, the further one (a 10-minute walk from the check-in spot) is very large. However, the few blackberries we found (and we really had to search) had very little flavor. The apples are all marred in some way and again, the hunt was on to find any that didn't have huge flaws. They were sprayed with something that also left a thick white coating on them (the owner said it was organic). I had sprayed with bug spray and still have huge bites on my legs. Who knows what go to me while standing in at least 12" tall weeds to get any fruit? We were all very hot and frustrated by the time we got back to pay. My husband went to pay and I went to turn on the A/C in the car. Instead of taking my husband's money, the owner came running to my car to tell me to turn it off, as she does not allow idling on her property. Huh? If she would have just took his money instead of taking the time to yell at me, we would have been gone by then. She was extremely rude. The peach side of the orchard (you have to drive to it) was absolutely no better. There were rotten peaches all over the ground and the peaches in the trees were also rotting in place (see pictures). The only peaches that were not full of bugs or obviously rotten were not ripe. So, we ended up with unripened peaches. I might as well have just gone to the store. I would certainly advise to avoid this place, save yourself a trip and a lot of bug bites, and find another orchard or just go to the grocery store. We paid a similar price as we would at the store and got a lower quality product after a LOT of work.

A hidden gem! No need to drive through miles of dirt rock roads to get here, it's right off the highway. Once you get here they provide you with buckets or other containers depending on what you're picking, no need to worry about bringing your own. Follow the signs to the fruit of your choice and walk through what seems like your own secret garden! This is a wonderful family owned farm with no admission fee and great prices!

We LOVE this farm. Not overly commercialized, just a simple working farm with variety of fruit and berries to pick throughout summer.

The little ones had a wonderful time running up and down the rows and picking and (scarily) carrying the cartons of blackberries.

He then proceeded to yell at some employees and tell them to call the cops so I drove my tank into the dense thickets of strawberries. I started firing at the Wegmeyer employees and they fired back. I got strawberry splatter all over me and it looked like blood so I played dead. The workers came over to haul my body into the dumpster bc a death would be "bad for business" but then I ninja moved them and Mr Wegmeyer was so happy at my moves he gave me free produce. 11/10 highly recommend

The 40/bucket and reservation red tape is fairly annoying but maybe Nova just has too many rich people into expensive strawberry picking that y'all need to line them up. Strawberry hill was the best picking for me. 10 minutes to fill two buckets with big ripe berries that you need to eat within a few days or they are gone. Sweet, no funny taste. About an hour drive for me, but going back this weekend. It's worth the drive to me.
