The store itself has the best selection on the island, environmentally friendly products, and great employees. There is a lot of produce here that doesn't exist anywhere else on the island. But the markup on their products makes the bulk of what they sell inaccessible to the average person. It's beyond the classic healthfood store pricing, we're talking $20 for a jar of almond butter when Vineyard Grocer (under five minutes away) sells the same thing for much less. I mean, it seems counterintuitive to be focused on eco-friendliness and then to price out the majority so only some can afford it, right? Like, if you want people buying non-organic/fair trade/etc, why make it so most of them can't do it at your store? The counter argument I usually hear is that you get a discount via the Island Club Card, but that's going away soon and it's like $90. So it's still a problem. Sometimes you'll need to go here to buy something you want and in all honesty if you're visiting the island it's worth checking out. But always look at the price tag before you buy anything, you never know when something that should be $7 is $30. read more

This is an outrageous grocery store, charging 2-3 times what I pay for things at Whole Foods! Selection is not spectacular, the fruits and vegetables look terrible. The store isn't even that well stocked or clean. I literally saw a pint of cherry tomatoes for $10. The yogurt I buy is $1.25 at Wegman's and $2.49 at Cronig's. Soda that's often 4 two liters for $5 in Boston is $3.99 each. I walked out with some drinks and snacks for the beach and it was $100. Checkout people are nice. It's sad because I would love to support local businesses and I'm not a Stop and Shop fan but it's better than this. read more

The watermelon at Cronig's compares to none other. sweet ripe not pale and fresh. The produce is superb and the quality is just as great. Much better than SNS quality. It may be a tiny bit more lately than SNS but if the quality is what you are looking for it is well worth it. I'm very tired of tossing stuff in the trash 2 days after I purchase it. The staff is friendly and always there to lend a hand in whatever you need. It is also very clean. I cannot recommend going to this store for the freshest in all with a discount even. But Local Island Fresh Eggs organic meats fresh cooked chickens, just absolutely great. read more

This market is gorgeous! Large, well-stocked and full of beautiful, fresh, local produce. They carry everything a big chain supermarket would, but with less bulk and more quality. They've also got a great variety of natural and cruelty-free brands, which I love. The parking lot can be tricky - it's a little awkward and prone to crowding, which can be a hassle. A large portion is also dedicated to electric cars, which is super cool. Another downside to this market? Everything is super expensive, even for Island standards. If you can get essentials like toilet paper and cereal off-island, I highly recommend that! read more

I love Cronig's Markets. Virtually the only grocery stores on the Island, they are really the place to go -- especially when you consider that, because of its location right across from the Vineyard Haven ferry, the Stop and Shop's parking lot is thoroughly effed. Aside from the parking situation, the difference between Stop and Shop and Cronig's is that the latter tries to source as much of its produce locally--very locally--as they can. What do they have for produce? What do you want?! Seriously, the selection is amazing. Better than most grocers off-Island. Aside from the produce, they have cards, hardware, health and beauty, home-wares, meat, fish, dairy, bulk spices, and baked goods. Prices on some items are a little out there, but as I've mentioned before, this is the Vineyard tax. Stop complaining, you're on the most beautiful spot in New England! And now, you can cook the most beautiful meals. read more

The produce is gorgeous! Not a blemish on anything. Wide variety of vegetables, especially mushrooms. Lots of healthy choices of foods organic and good choices in packaging for the planet. They have a system on there website, you can enter your grocery list and you get a list of where each food is located in the store what aisle. Haven't used it yet, will try this coming week. Prices are higher than stop & shop, but their quality and variety of healthier foods is better . Bottom line: if processed foods with lots of added salt,cheap poor quality oils, food colorings, etc. is your thing, go to stop & shop otherwise Cronigs is definitely the place for you to shop. read more

Your choices of grocers on Martha's Vineyard are fairly limited, so each has its own niche market and ability to provide goods to the general public. That said, each has its limitations as well. Cronig's has been an island staple for decades, emerging from a well established family from days gone by. This particular store is very welcoming, particularly the parking lot. The owners invest heavily in their landscape, assuring that patrons have the best visual appeal the Vineyard has to offer. To have but a single hydrangea or black eyed Suzie out of full bloom during the season is unheard of. Recently the parking lot was outfitted with electric car charging stations and a solar energy car port. The Vineyard has been a pacesetter with innovation - some that works, some that does not. Either way, I am glad to see that Cronig's rolled the dice on what will likely be a great value add. When I retire to the Vineyard in TWENTY YEARS, I know that my electric car will have a station while I'm shopping. As far as larger markets on the island, it's got the best selection of produce. Living or visiting the island engenders a greater desire to life and eat healthfully, and the fresh foods section of the store always delivers. They even have organic veggies. Now, because it's not a mega store and because it's water locked, don't go expecting some amazing deals on fennel or a bug price cut on heirloom tomatoes. No. Therefore, just buy what you need for the day, and the budget should marginalize. You'll also feel better having ingested a good array of fresh produce. read more

Like I would ask a simple question about where something was with please and thanks and all I received in return was apathy, and a tough tone of voice. Came in at 5:45 to pick up a few items for dinner and was promptly rushed out as I was told the store was closing. All the produce and butcher sections were already closed up. What grocery store.closes at 5:45? And if you have customers, in your store trying buy ypur products, why wpuld ypu close early. There were a dozen other customers in there as well. Wouldn't mind paying their obscenely high prices if the the store was clean and had decent products, displays and produce. I get they give residents (which I am not) 20% off the shelf price, but still screwing the locals severely. Owners should be ashamed of themselves. This place is deprolable !!! Not only is it disgustingly over priced, their produce is awful !!! The meat counter has e-coli written all over it. I live on the island for five months a year, I go there as it is the closest to my house. However I always put the basket down and walk out!!! It is disgusting what they charge for what they sell. I will happily pay for quality, this is the furthest thing from quality. DO NOT SHOP THERE !!!! BUT, this place is 30-40% more on most items vs the Stop and Shop in Edgartown and at least that much more than stores where we are from in FL. Shame on you owners! Cronigs main down Island is wonderful. Fresh meats, all manner of the best goods, energy conscious and local. Charging stations from solar panels for electric. Cars. Quality of meats and produce is outstanding. Pleasant staff. I do wish they would cover the floor. It's cement . Up Island Cronigs is a different story. read more

This is my favorite grocery store ever! SInce I live in Manhattan part of the year, my choices are vast. Firstly, I love the way the store looks- grocery shopping is not my fav- the aesthetic is so pleasant at Cronig's that I enjoy walking the aisles. Secondly, the product choices are exceptional. Whoever buys for the store obviously cares about the environment, health, people and animals. They have gluten-free and organic options everywhere. They even have organic and holistic dog food choices. For nonfood options, like soap, dish detergent, laundry stuff, I never even heard of some of the brands they have- local and eco-sustainable items everywhere. It is a joy to shop here - I have been doing so for 10 years and it has improved every year. For veggies and fruits, I would go to the local farms, but even those items are sold here. I wasn't surprised that is more expensive than the yucky (dirty) Stop&Shop near the ferry. Stop&Shop has no choices for eco or healthy items. It doesn't look clean or attractive at all. Vacation resort stores are typically more expensive than other places. Yet, I found out that the owner offers even part-time workers a living wage, health insurance, job security and underwrites island programs like the island-grown initiative and affordable housing projects. Knowing that, I don't mind spending a little more to support the community. read more
