Since I was last in Portsmouth and used the outpatients department a new building has been built on the site. Recently I had cause to visit and though the appointment was almost on time and the consultant I saw was very throrough and friendly I had the usual issues for parking. All the parking at this hospital is pay and display and there is only one place in the hospital that will give you change. Don't try the outpatients reception (new or old) or even main reception. The only place you can get change is from the main restaurant which is quite a walk down many coridoors. So my tip is take plenty of change for the meters and I'd always opt for a minimum of 2 hours as you never know how long the wait to be seen will be.

Oakhaven took my father from a horribly busy and noisy Southampton General Hospital and gave him somewhere peaceful and dignified to finally drift off where he was cared for every minute of the day without having to wait 2 hours for pain relief. The lovely people here looked after the whole family; providing food, drink and somewhere to sleep when required. I can not say enough good things about Oakhaven or the people that make it so special. Angels.

IF you can make it that far you will be greeted by a lovely and welcoming member of reception. The main waiting area is well lit from a large window, there is a good range of current magazines and a nice clean selection of kids toys. My experience of my dentist is very positive, the work is explained carefully and options are always offered. If you're a nervous patient (like me) he tends to do well at putting you at ease although i dislike the circus scene painted onto the ceiling as the clowns give me the creeps!! The one thing i noticed recently was a new member of staff needed a little more training on how to treat disabled patients as she was a little condescending, but other than that i would say all the staff are pretty cool. Private rates are hourly, and from my experience never excessive.

Thank goodness it was a chest infection but was kept in overnight because my oxygen levels were low. My only complaint was the ward was dirty and looked run down and tacky. The loo was horrible, not clean and patients urine samples were left there. Even mine! I was told to give a sample leave it there and a nurse would sort it out. My sample stayed in exactly the same place where I had put and was still there when I left, the same goes for the other samples, they never moved.

For nervous patients the far end of the waiting area has a lovely fish tank, popular with children and next to a good selection of childrens toys. The surgery operates a touch screen booking in service, which means no more queues to book in with the receptionist! They also have an intercom system which saves the staff time as your name comes across a tannoy into the waiting area advising you which treatment room to go into. The staff are generally all very friendly, and although it is quite a modern surgery it has all the personal touches you would associate with a traditional one!

However, having been put off by Queen Alexandra's Hospital in Portsmouth by their lack of physical tour (you have to get by with a substandard YouTube video), and also feedback from others that it was a busy hospital and somewhat akin to a sausage machine (I had one story of someone being in and out in 12 hours - and they didn't necessarily want to be processed so quickly), I decided to opt for Chichester. It was the right choice - indeed quieter, albeit a bit older looking, but still fit for purpose. This maternity ward is very well run, the midwife was very good and I got the epidural that I wanted (needed!) for my third baby. I would definitely recommend this hospital to any nervous mums. Getting the tour and having a chance to ask questions and familiarize oneself with the layout was really helpful in orientating me to the NHS way and allaying any fears/answering questions. My only pick up point was infant security. As I left the hospital the receptionist let me swan out - no outgoing checks, no bracelet checking, no escort to the door, nothing. It made me wonder what the protocol was should there be an attempted baby theft...
