Pollo Asado al Carbón and Carne en Vara sit right next to each other inside a flea market on South Orange Blossom Trail. You don't come here for the décor. You come here for the food -- abuela style. This is the kind of cooking where nobody is counting calories, nobody cares whether the ingredients have a marketing department, and your only responsibility is to sit down, shut up, and eat. The charcoal-grilled chicken has that smoky, slightly charred flavor you simply can't fake in an oven. Then walk a few feet over to Carne en Vara for Colombian-style meat cooked over fire. Simple seasoning, smoke, heat and flavor. No culinary gymnastics necessary. Now, a public-service announcement: get the garlic sauce. Don't debate it. Don't ask what's in it. Just get it. Chicken, beef, whatever you're eating -- put the garlic sauce on it. Skipping it would be like ordering a New York slice and eating it with a knife and fork. Technically possible, but we're going to have questions. And wash everything down with a Mexican-made soda in the glass bottle. Don't show up with some diet nonsense and ruin the experience. Meat off the fire, garlic sauce and an ice-cold Mexican soda -- that's the combination. Don't eat here without it. And yes, they're inside a flea market. That's a feature, not a bug. Being from New York, I learned a long time ago that some of the best food comes from places where the décor budget appears to have been $14.75 and a trip to Home Depot. If the grill is hot, the meat is good and somebody's grandmother would approve, we're doing just fine. My recommendation: don't choose between the two places. Hit both. Get the charcoal chicken, grab some carne en vara next door, load up on garlic sauce, crack open that Mexican soda and conduct your own little United Nations peace conference on a plate. Come hungry.
