Searching for gems! A wide variety in each bucket. The kids were very impressed and the guys working helped us ID gems.

Excellent family place! Took our 6 and three year olds and they had a blast. Staff is very helpful and patient. Plenty of help to give everyone the attention they need. The shop is cool and well organized. The mini-museum/ old mining equipment you walk through it interesting. Will go again and suggest to others!

The store at this place was similar to the other gold mining place in the area. Filled with gold, gems, trinkets, etc. They also offer to cut your gems for you, if you'd like... I'm not too sure of Consolidated does, but don't quote me on that. The tour here is self-guided and outside. They have a hydraulic pump, two stamp mills that still work today. You can take your time here, as you dont have to follow a group. We did the gold panning and the gem mining... my wife and I would both agree that the gem mining was more fun. We actually got a bunch of cool and interesting gems here. They offer small buckets to wheel barrow-sized fun so you can get more gems or gold. Since we hadn't mined for gems before, the guy there was very helpful in showing us how to do it. You definitely keep everything you find... gold and gems. Fun times for the entire family.

We had an absolutely great time at Crisson Gold Mine! Jim at Bavarian Mountain Mini Golf in Helen told us to come here. He said it was his families favorite place to mine for gold and we can see why. Around since 1847, they were the first gold mine in Dahlonega to open their doors to the public. One of the employees (owner maybe) said she had been doing this for over 30 years. All of the staff was so nice. They allowed us to mine inside because it was around 45 degrees and windy that day. We bought the $45.00 deal for gold mining, which had plenty of dirt for three of us to mine multiple times. They would periodically come around and ask if we needed help. I think we accepted every single time because they obviously know how to do it better than us. All three of us found several flakes of gold. They give you a little vile of water to bring them home in. We had such a good time that we decided to do the gem mining too. For $30.00 we got a bucket full of dirt and found so many gems. And these aren't small little pieces, they are huge chunks. It was a lot of fun finding out which ones you were going to get and identifying them on the chart after. If you find one you really like they will cut it down and make it into a piece of jewelry for you. The gift shop had a huge variety of gold and gem related merchandise. I picked up an amethyst necklace that I love for under $15.00. If you're looking for a place to do a little gold digging (or gem) definitely go to Crisson Gold Mine.

Ask the Community - Crisson Gold Mine

If you find something when you are panning, can you keep it? Is there any chance to actually find something?

Yes to both questions. I have several lockets filled with the gold I've found there on a necklace.

Visited here recently for my niece's birthday, and it was quite an adventure to say the least! Took…read moreus about an hour and half from the Cumming area to get there. We bought tickets online and they had our name and feed purchases ready when we pulled up. Greeter gave us our buckets and explained the rules. We were probably one of the first cars through, so the animals were sort of hanging out far from the road. First animal we see is an emu in the distance on my niece's side. We are so focused on looking at that one and trying to get her excited, that I didn't even notice one had sneaked up on my side of the car and literally stuck his head in the window and grabbed feed from the bucket on my lap which startled me a bit which then proceeded to startle my niece...and that essentially set the tone for the rest of our time there. Next we came to the zebras. We were warned that they were a little pushy and had teeth like donkeys. You're taught to hold the bucket outside the car, but they pushed themselves inside the window (on my niece's side of course) and kept trying to grab the bucket, which just ended up dumping half of it into the car. We also saw some quiet, polite deer in the woods as well as some antelope in the distance. Next, we saw some llamas (or maybe alpacas). They too are a little pushy, but not as bad as the zebras. I think one even stopped at my window and smiled to pose for me to take his picture before he helped himself to another half a bucket of feed. Then we get to the camel. All prior animals were able to literally get in our car. The camel is inside a pen thankfully....He comes to the edge of his fence and we pulled close enough to where I could hold the bucket out my niece's side. He immediately grabbed the bucket from my hand, held it over his head to eat it, then dropped the bucket on the ground. I'm thinking I have to get the bucket back because I don't want to get in trouble. Problem #1 is, the first rule is to stay in your car at all times. Problem #2, some of the emus have now followed us and are quickly approaching from the rear. I climb into the front passenger seat, open the door, grab the bucket and quickly get back into the car. Meanwhile, the camel has moved on. He got what he wanted and had lost interest, figuring he would just wait on the next unsuspecting victim in the next car. We pass some water buffalo and the longhorns and a couple of highland cows. An ostrich quickly runs up the road in front of us so we can't get away. He helps himself and seemed a little more polite and pretty than the emus, so I let him snack. Eventually, we found the parking area and petting zoo. Mind you, there are signs telling you not to pet them or feed from your hand...but still call it a "petting zoo." Fed the goats and a huge pig. Made our way to the giraffes and someone shared some lettuce with my niece so she could feed them. She didn't love it, but didn't freak as much. Then we go to the aviary. We had bought three sticks with sticky seed on it, all of which I was carrying when we entered. I think we walked into a Hitchcock movie.... Parakeets swarm us the second we enter. Land on the sticks, our arms and my niece's head. That went over well.... Tried to direct her attention to the pretty birds and bright colors. Figured we should just exit quickly so we did. Went to gift shop where she bought a stuffed highland cow and all was well again!

When I first walked through, my initial thoughts were that I wasn't that impressed. Everything seems haphazardly laid out and just didn't seem that visitor friendly. They do have some unique animals that you wouldn't normally see. Animals seem well cared for. And well, I could pet and feed horses for hours! Then at the end, we started talking with them as they were getting ready to close up, and come to find out they never intended this to be a public attraction. They really just started out housing a few animals that Fish & Game and trapped and/or confiscated from folks that didn't have the proper permits. After our conversation I gained a little more appreciation for what they do. It is ALOT of work to care for something like this, not to mention expense. If you are in the area, stop by and support them, feed a horse or a camel and take some neat selfies with some unique animals.

The zoo is on the smaller side but has a laid-back, welcoming vibe. There was a great variety of animals that all looked well cared for--wolves, grizzly and black bears, kangaroos, a tiger, sloth, horses, zebras, white bison, and more. We arrived right at opening, and most of the animals were active. There was plenty of parking, and the prices were fair--$15 per adult and $5 for a bag of treats to feed some of the animals. Even the porta potty bathroom was clean, which was a nice surprise!
