(The pier is currently closed.) The beach itself is great as well, for sunbathing, swimming, or taking a walk. There are also plenty of places nearby to grab some food. On Wednesday evenings, come by for the OB Farmers Market! At times, the area can be a little rough, but in ten years of living here, I have never had an issue. The instructor was amazing and very personable and patient. You can instantly tell he loves teaching, and that energy made the whole experience even more exciting for the kids. They had several Torqs surfboards to rent so my boyfriend and I tried 2. You can rent up to like 3 boards same day for price of $10 per person which is a steal. Last time I tried before I buyed was like a $35 rental and although I did end up getting that board and love it, $10 is so cheap in comparison. All you need is to leave a credit card or ID for your rental, and just one per party. You also sign some paperwork and you're good to go. Recommend you come at 10am when they open so you get access to all of their boards.

They answered all of our newbie questions and pointed us in the right direction to try and surf. We each rented wetsuits ($15 for half-day) and a soft top surfboard ($10/hr) and we were on our way! The rentals were great quality and we enjoyed surfing for 2 hours by the dog beach (just north of lifeguard tower 5). Will definitely be back again whenever we have visitors that want to surf!!

The staff at Ocean Experience were attentive, caring, professional, and clearly very experienced. Every day, my kids came home full of stories and beaming with pride about what they learned -- whether it was catching a wave, dropping in for the first time, or exploring marine life. They looked forward to going every morning, and it was amazing to watch how much fun they had while also progressing in their skills. The group assisted as guides and guards out in the water for Surfrider's 22nd Annual Paddle Around the Pier & did a great job! They also host the Gromfest, which is a great thing for the younger surfer crowd. Surfers 16 and under qualify to compete if they live in the 92106 or '07 zip codes. Teen surfers can register and gain valuable experience surfing in contests and showcasing their skills. A story in the Peninsula Beacon talked about Gromfest. " (It) is held in remembrance of Carl Warner, a local resident who enjoyed the ocean and surfing. After his passing, Warner's former employers and local Point Loma residents Lisa and Rick Haux -- owners of MOR Furniture For Less -- wanted to do something for area youth in honor of Warner. In coordination with the Haux's and SCSA, Gromfest became a reality. All money collected by Gromfest organizers benefits the SCSA Juniors Program. Great group of caring surfers and supporters who make up Sunset Cliffs Surfing Association.
