The Midleton Distillery Experience is home to seven iconic Irish whiskey brands: Jameson, Redbreast, Powers, Midleton Very Rare, The Spot Whiskeys, Method and Madness, and Knappogue Castle. The site itself is the original Old Midleton Distillery, and walking through it means moving through restored 19th-century warehouse buildings where whiskey has been aged in oak casks for generations. The history is embedded in the walls, and the experience is designed to make sure you actually feel it rather than just walk past it. We booked the private premium tasting tour, and the decision to go private changed the entire dynamic of the visit. Our tour guide -- French by birth, now based in Ireland having moved to learn English -- was exceptional. His enthusiasm for Irish whiskey was completely genuine, his knowledge was deep, and his ability to translate that knowledge into something both accessible and fascinating made the experience far better than any standard group tour could have. The kind of guide who makes you leave knowing things you did not expect to know when you arrived. The premium tasting takes you through four prestige whiskeys from the distillery's range, each contextualised properly rather than just poured and moved on from. The difference between what's available here and what you find on a standard shelf is immediately apparent. The highlight, and the moment that made the visit stick: I purchased a cask strength expression at 61% and bottled it myself directly from the cask. That is a singular experience -- standing in a working distillery, filling your own bottle from a numbered cask, corking it by hand. It is not a gimmick. It is exactly what it sounds like, and it earns every penny. If you are in the Cork area, include this in your itinerary without hesitation. The experience here is more thorough and personal than anything the Dublin distillery offers. Go private if you can, and stay long enough to bottle something. The small company is found in Strawhall, Fermoy and makes Raw Cows Milk Specialty Cheese. Frank and Gudrun Shinnick are members of Good Food Ireland and CAIS (Irish Farmhouse Cheesemakers Association). They make five different cheeses: Cais Dubh, Cais Rua, Saint Brigid, Saint Gall and Hibernian. Hibernian is not easy to find but the others can be bought at the farmers markets (at Mark Hosford's stalls) and at the Pig's Back in the English Market. Nash 19 also use them in their restaurant. And indeed it was Mairéad from Nash 19 that directed me over to the Pig's Back where I bought a wedge of St Gall. This is a hard Swiss type cheese and was certainly a hit in our house and I immediately added it to my short list of favourites. St Brigid didn't go down as well - let's say we had a disagreement. It is a semi-hard smeared ripened cheese and, though described as mild, is somewhat more pungent than St Gall. I certainly didn't find it overpowering, or anywhere near it, and would love to have it on my plate at anytime. Still, if forced to make a choice I would go for the five and a half star St Gall. The Gudruns are an award winning couple as they picked up a Gold Medal double in the 2008 World Cheese Awards. The cheese is made from the milk of their pedigree Friesians who graze in the fertile valley of the Blackwater. Now for the Cais Dubh and the Cais Rua!

I have been here before once for a family dinner and I was delighted as the food was great (even though I am usually in love with Italian grub anyway) and the place was booming with guests. This time I went with a few friends for lunch and it was only alright to be honest. As it was a Monday lunch, the restaurant had space for walk-ins. The atmosphere is quite nice with wooden furniture, big bowls, candlelight and when you check-in with Yelp, you get 2 free glasses of wine (woohoo!). I ordered Tagliatelle al Salmone served with basil cream and garlic bread and people around me choose many different options: beef sandwiches with side of chips, penne with chorizo, an open ciabatta with chicken/salad and farfalle with spicy sauce. My pasta was not fabulous but only alright and the side of fries was unfortunately made of thin strings. Everyone ate and it went well but it was not as good as when I was here last time in terms of taste and smell. The average lunch price for a plate of pasta or a sandwich as a main is 15€; they serve jars of water and as vegetarian options they have nut burger, stir-fry and curry. For starters, it varies from salad to corn and soup costing around 5€. Desserts are also around that price and you can expect ice-cream, brownies, banoffee pie and apple crumble. Prices rise by nearly a fiver in dinner time and from what I saw on the menu, the amount of choice is greater later on, hence its popularity then! Also, having a bread basket as antipasti and Parmesan on the table would add a lot to this place. Anyway, I would recommend going at night for sure!
