I think my favorite is the Maine Roll. The Moscow mule was perfect for the warm weather, made by Nikki, a very friendly bartender/proprietor. As I wandered around the various booths I sampled many other tasty items, like fresh cookies from Blueberry Moon Patisserie, fresh olive oil, scones from Flour Girl and freeze dried candy from Cosmic Candy. Also picked up a couple gifts from Restored Boutique. Overall a very friendly event. A couple booths had some excellent looking fresh fruit. Lots of craft vendors and live music. I will definitely comeback next week.

But if you do want a fantastic Farmers Market experience, you must head down to Wilsonville on Thursdays from 4-8 and check out the Wilsonville Farmers Market. There is live music all night long, a variety of farmers offering great produce, and awesome local shops and foodcarts eager to please. Not to mention, cooking demos as well! There are some really super awesome Market Volunteers to answer your questions or help carry your new goods to your car. For their opening, they were doing a raffle for free produce for the rest of the summer! (hint: I hear that may be happening next week too). So ya, you should check it out.

This farmers market is a little less hectic I'd say, and I dig it!…read more Nestled in a square parking lot, next to a few small businesses and a New Seasons, is the Orenco Farmers Market. Many times I've seen it and many times I've avoided it. But now I regret not checking it out the first time they opened up a few years ago. Here's a few tips and details: * Parking * Most folks park in the New Seasons parking lot, or down the residential streets. The times I've been here, the lot has never been full. So I've never had any issue finding parking. * Favorite Vendors * ~ The Pie Guy - out of North Plains. If you yelp that, you'll see why he's different. Love their variety of pies. ~ Pilgrim's Roasted Nut'z - Another North Plains favorite! You can literally go nuts buying more than one bag. ~ Kookido - UGH, mochi-filled cookies! I'm a mochi lover and chewy soft cookie kind of guy. These are heaven in a container! ~ Pablo Munoz Fruits - I'm all about their peaches and berries! ~ Martinez Family Farms - Come here early for these guys. They always have a long line to pay. ~ Favorite Produce - I dig their fresh flower bouquets. ~ Helvetia Vineyards & Winery - Another local wine favorite. Try a sample! ~ Baird Family Orchards - mmm mmm, gotta love them peaches! Especially their Sweet Sue yellow peaches. ~ Our Little Farm and Nursery - Haven't bought anything from these guys, but they're the ones that freshly roast peppers. People love'em! ~ Slow Rise Bakehouse - Located out of Forest Grove. Check out my ROTD for them ;) ~ Thompson Farms - The "pear guy"! He's picking bosc pears soon. I cannot wait! ~ Papa's Sunflower Seeds - Flavored roasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds. These are the guys that do team fundraising. ~ Ochoas Catering & Events - Necessito burrito! They wrap up fat burritos (and more) and their salsas are simply el mejor! For the most part, if it's a hot summer day, the market can close a bit early due to excessive heat. I've yet to go here on a rainy day. But in closing for my next visit, I'm trying the pasta lady, the hot sauce guy, and the fresh mini donuts. Oh and the mouthful momo stand. I absolutely love visiting Orenco Station - Hillsboro market for the first time last weekend. It's a good opportunity to support local and small. Parking wasn't an issue as there is desinated parking areas in apartment lots in front of the market. My favorite part was the local food vendors! We grabbed momos (delicious), tacos (best tacos in Oregon in my opinion), and hummus. HIGHLIGHT OF MY WEEKEND! S/O to Ochoa Catering and Events and Hummus Spot for putting my partner and I in our taco and hummus era. The service from these vendors were great and it was fun chatting about how their business started. I'm so glad I did as I had a much better experience this go around! Not only did we get a TON of delicious, perfectly ripe berries, but decided to enjoy lunch on the little patio of the farm store. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with blueberry spread and it was fabulous. We also got the Dubai chocolate strawberries for dessert and WOW! Delicious. Kids - 33. Mom - 5…read more One of the nasty little surprises for parents of school aged children are these pesky little things called holidays and school closure days. The count above reflects the number of days during the school year that the primary schools in my district are closed vs. the number of days my company recognizes as holidays. Notice a little discrepancy? Well, mother's little helper isn't a glass of chardonnay. For some of those days, it is CREST to the rescue. A public school education in West Linn - Wilsonville is quite good. But, even in the best of times, exposing your kids to new concepts with a focus on nature, science, inquiry and exploration is never a bad thing. And guess what? These full day programs are scheduled to coincide with days the public schools are closed. CREST works in conjunction with the WLWV school district and they operate a research facility and farm in Wilsonville. CREST isn't open on a daily basis to the public, but you can call them to schedule a tour. They also have an open house every fall [1] and special events throughout the year. They've even partnered with Audubon in the past for wildlife releases. My children have benefited from CREST programs for years. A few of their 'Learning on the Go' programs take place at the CREST facility, but more often than not, they are field trips. Amazing trips to parks, wetlands, creeks and farms. The programs are grade level specific, so on the same day they may offer two programs. One for grades 1 - 3 and another for grades 2 - 5. This isn't a cheap option ($35 - 40/day), but I consider it money well spent. The highlight for my oldest son last year was their week long spring break trip to the Oregon Coast. My son had an absolute blast and they perfectly balanced education and fun. Another reason why this is the best of the best in my area is that the district created a Farm-to-School program, managed by CREST, so they have a 10-acre plot to raise fresh produce for our district's food program. I can't say enough good things about the staff. Both on the administrative and the educational side. A public school education can be a mixed bag, but CREST earns full marks. They are totally on the honor roll. [1] Open House is September 18, 2010 from 10am - 2 pm
