On January 14, 2018 I was forced to surrender an apartment I had taken over a lease for 4 months…read morebefore because of a complaint of a "pitt bull" residing in my apartment. The breed I own and indicated on my application is a fully grown 35lb. American Staffordshire terrier meeting the rule requirements given to me in my lease packet for dogs being less than 50 lbs. and spayed or neutered (and a horrific requirement for declawed cats. I was told that due to an insurance policy "restricted breeds" are not allowed. None of this was EVER brought up to me when I came into talk about taking over the lease and making sure the pet deposit was transferable nor when I signed my copy of the lease. When asked for a copy of the policy from the insurance company I was told that this is in fact NOT in there insurance policy however that "corporate" still chooses to follow this policy with a "restricted breeds" list. I was also told that a copy of the previous tenants lease that was not shown or signed by me from 2016 applied to my residence and stated "exotic, vicious, dangerous animals or restricted breeds are not allowed" yet no formal list could not be presented or a reasonable explanation for why this out of date policy is still being practiced. They also had the audacity to suggest I could just get rid of the dog. Breed discrimination is an ignorant, stereotype that has been proven over and over again to have nothing to do with dog aggression and a simple bit of research on a reliable site such as the American humane society or ASPCA would confirm this, yet "corporate" was too busy to get in contact with me to at least let me hear what I had to say, come meet my dog, and said nothing to other owners who's dogs had boxer, terrier, or a clearly over the weight limit bull dog in the apartment next to me so it seems it's only dogs that look like their definition of a pit bull. I have owned my dog since she was puppy. I adopted her from a shelter, and they do NOT adopt aggressive dogs. A dog, of any breed, are aggressive when they are made to be and even SC law states a dog can not be dubbed aggressive because of its breed. I have a great credit score, work history not criminal background, never late on rent, yet I essentially lost my home, had to pay to move, had to put down new deposits and was extremely inconvenienced due this ignorance and there were absolutely no complaints about her other than she exists. Please do not rent from this company, especially if you are a pet owner and if you agree that this out of date way of thinking should change please contact them and let them know this is not just the opinion of one person. I will continue to dispute this and I hope no one else ever has to go through what I have been through just because the breed of the dog they love.
