If I could give HackPittsburgh negative stars, I would…read more I was a member of Hack Pittsburgh for three years and was at the shop nearly every day. I contributed thousands of dollars worth of equipment and spent more time there working on improving the shop than working on my own projects. I truly enjoyed my time there until a new board was elected. When this new group took over, they made a series of decisions that benefited them and exercised their power over other members, not for the benefit of the shop as a whole. Two board members, a couple, ran their Internet Service Provider business out of the shop and received a $100,000 grant, even though running a business out of the shop violates their constitution. Another board member was particularly cruel to older men. She even posted an apology on her Facebook page, blaming her behavior on not having good health insurance and being off her medication. Even after she got health insurance, her behavior didn't improve. Her boyfriend, also on the board, always voted with her. The fifth member of the board, the President, was ineffectual and unable to resolve conflicts between members. The situation was completely out of his control. The shop took on a park beautification project for the City of Pittsburgh, with an agreement to maintain the park for five years. Months later, most of their work was destroyed, and they had already spent the entire project budget. They made no effort to fulfill the terms of their agreement. Funds that were supposed to be used for maintaining shop equipment were spent on one large and expensive tool for the benefit of one former board member. Because of the placement of this tool in the shop, there was not adequate walking space around it, against the manufacturer's recommendations. This tool's placement also jammed the other tools in the shop together in a way that made them unsafe to use. When I called for a vote about this tool's location, my membership was anonymously revoked with no opportunity for discussion. Three other older men were also driven out about the same time I was. We contacted an attorney to take legal action against Hack Pittsburgh for lack of ADA compliance and ageism. The arrangement of the shop required that heavy tools be moved, and in one case climbed on, for use. We were told that as a private club, they are allowed to be prejudiced and that even if we won a lawsuit, the shop's total assets wouldn't cover the legal fees. If you are going there to use the tools, don't bother. Due to bad maintenance, any given tool may not be working when you get there, and if you're not part of the in-group, you may be treated badly. Also, don't donate anything to Hack Pittsburgh. During the time I was there, I saw valuable tools and materials carelessly thrown away during shop cleans. Sincerely, don't waste your time at Hack Pittsburgh. I know five other former members of Hack Pittsburgh who will tell you the same thing: avoid this place. The shop is so badly run it can only exist because its landlord gives them cheap rent and doesn't know what's going on in his building.

There are sewing machines a computer driven embroidery machine and other equipment which were being used by a group who were designing cosplay outfits. There are computers with licenced copies of Adobe Suites and other graphics programs. There is sautering equipment. One of the best features of the place is the people. Interesting friendly nerds in the best sense. If you want to learn to use the equipment, there are times for lessons or you can contact a member and ask him or her to teach you. This space is well known in the community and beyond. It has been visited by some famous people. It costs $50 per month to join but there are significant discounts for students, military, people over 62 and others. If you join you get a key fob which gives you 24 hour access. There are usually open houses for non members Saturday and Monday evenings.

My insurance confirmed that consultations are covered at 100% BTW. Then, months later I receive a bill saying my insurance paid the previous amount, but now it doubled and I still owe the same amount. I then called 6 times over the next month and a half and was told each time that their system was down and they could not view my bill. Finally received a voicemail (a drop in voicemail mind you - you know the ones where their system drops you a voicemail without even calling you so that you then have to call them back again!!!!!!!). I call back again today and was informed they are unsure why I am showing a double charge and it now needs escalated. I would love to have this taken care of before 2027. The amount of time I have spent dealing with this is absurd.

He got back to us the night of, great. Well, they were 100/hr with a 100 dollar truck free, 50 dollars for a third. First day they show up around noon- okay great. They start loading the things and we had to provide our own materials. So if we didn't have tape/syran/blankets then it wasn't provided. We lost most of the hardware because of this, none was given to us nor was it explained. Given when we were putting our furniture back together they had hardware pieces in them- so I guess they loosened them then just left them hanging in the headboards/etc. Six PM hits and they have only done the upstairs. This doesn't include packing, everything was packed already. Our 4 dogs were also penned up and the door left wide open the whole time. So after they get all the boxes out of the house they work on my dad's shed downstairs. We hired them mostly to move our furniture because my father cannot lift a certain amount due to his heart attack and my mom and sister are disabled. Well, they only got half the garage done. Mind you we have 3D printers, 2 CNC machines and lots of hardware tools. If you are unfamiliar with prices my printer was 1k,CNC for 1k and 200. So they are putting the printers in the truck and the guy drops the 1k one. One person told him to be careful with a customers stuff not to break it. I turned and said 'Yes, please don't the thing you dropped is like 1k bro.' So he turns to me and tells me that 'I better not tell him how to do his job' and that 'he's tired of my shit'. Another one of the movers moved between us because he took a step at me. He started pointing at me that he is 'going to kick my fucking ass'. So him and the other mover began to fight. While they are fighting they begin to knock over the expensive machines while they are beating the literal crap out of each other. The one who threatened me was removed from the job. Now- it's close to 8pm. We are down to 2 guys, we still have my parents room, garage, basement, living room, dining room and kitchen to put in the truck. WELP their truck is full now. So, we had our own and they began to fill it. Mom said she wanted certain stuff put in the truck because dad/i cannot lift it alone. While putting our hottub in the truck the guy kept using the tiedowns for the hottub to push it into the truck. These tie-downs were only used to keep a cover on the hottub. Given the pressure, it snapped in half tearing out a piece of the side of the hottub. Great. So, they begin to move my mother's china cabinet using my dolly. Cool. Well, it wasn't moving fast enough so he put his foot on the edge and I heard the wood cracking. I told him to stop doing it that he was breaking it. What do I know tho? 10pm and both trucks are filled now. Still the same amount of stuff. So we are at 1k and only half our house is packed. We did have some setbacks- because they didn't have another truck and our house wasn't cleaned out.. We had to postpone our move. This was thursday. They held our stuff until Tuesday. We had another set of movers come in and finish packing the rest of the house. Took another truck. They removed everything out of the 2nd truck we rented that they had packed and repacked it fitting all our stuff in 1 15' and a 20'. Tuesday comes and he texts the guy to be here at around 4pm. We get to Erie and the second moving company is almost done unpacking. 7pm hits. He brought 2 guys with him, mind youthe owner sat in his truck the whole time.. But we didn't pay for him techincally to move anything. BUT. they start unloading. Only one guy is taking stuff into the house. They brought 3 dollies, used ours as well to get the furniture they did have into the house. The other guy just 'moved all the stuff in the truck to the end of the truck' for the first guy. When he had too many boxes at the end of the truck he sat on his phone and played games until he was needed again. As I mentioned the curio was broken. As well as my curio cabinet, the glass completely shattered. We had a list of who took what. I went to talk to Eddie and told him our items were broken. He turned to his guys and asked why it was never mentioned to him and he said sorry. I just looked at him, and he asks 'well what do you want me to do'... I just stare, 'well dont you have buyers insurance?' as most moving companys provide. He sighs and says 'how much do you want'. I don't know the price so I bring my mother out. She explains to him and they go to look at the items. Their response was 'oh we didn't break those things.. that other movers must of did it.' hey took OUR brand new dolly and left one of their own rusted flat tire one. Well, my dad called and asked for his back. Guy said he didn't have it. When he explained he's like 'oh yeah i have that'. We never got it back.
