I for one hope Jolliffes sticks around, if only so I can sample all of the locally sourced cakes! I also recommend a mocha; although not on the board, the staff are more than happy to use their drinking chocolate drops (yes, ACTUAL chocolate) to make a creamy chocolate coffee for you. There's plenty of seating around the cafe (none out the front due to the permanently high footfall on this street) and the decor is light and airy... perfect for taking respite on a hot summer's day.

After a very satisfying lunch at Food for Friends (more on that in it's own review) and an afternoon of shopping and hunting for bargains in snoopers paradise, we fancied a coffee and a sit down. Jolliffes was near by and we thought why not. I have to say I was slightly disappointed! While the coffee was fine the cake selection was small and there was nothing original. The staff talked to each other while serving us (a pet peeve of mine) and the decor was more shabby than chic. The cafe itself had a sort of scandi feel to it, all wood and grey walls. We made our way upstairs and found a table on a very uneven floor. the table to the left of us under the window had plates of half eaten food and empty cups all over it (which is not a problem in itself as it could have easily only just been left there) but in the whole time we were say there no one came to clear it away despite the cafe not being overly busy. To top it off a huge seagull decided to jump in through the window and start pecking at the leftover food resulting in a friend having to chase it out and shut the window! Aside from that (which might have been just an unfortunate incident) the four of us settled into out coffees and cakes. The coffee was ok but certainly nothing special. The cake was just disappointing. Mine was a piece of millionaires shortbread and it just wasn't anything to write home about. The base was too soft and tasted just like the caramel filling making it kind of bland. Perhaps it was an off day, perhaps it was because they were nearly closing, I don't know but sadly I was left wishing I'd gone somewhere else!

My concern walking away from the Brighton Brunch spot was their lack of management in dealing with a full restaurant. ...or even a half full restaurant. We went in around 12:30 on a Sunday afternoon...prime Brunch/Post Night Out Hangover time. The outside seating was 75% full and the inside was 10% full...we opted for inside. The server came over and informed us that our food would take 25-30 minutes as the kitchen was overloaded. I have concerns here. We were sitting inside with one other table...not at all near capacity and the kitchen can't handle the volume of orders? When our White Americanos arrived they were 90% milk and much too weak so now we have a hot milk drink and no food for 25 minutes. I ordered the Full English Breakfast (See photo) and my man the "Big Boy Sandwich/Bacon, Sausage, Egg on a baguette". Once the food arrived and we ordered a new Americano instructing the kitchen how to make it...the meal was lovely. All in all, the breakfast was nice but as the 2 star rating says "Meh! I've experienced better"

There's a small patio and a cluster of tables outside as well as a number of cosy tables, chairs and curved plaster benches inside. Aesthetically, it looks like a cafe you might stumble across in Portugal or Greece but the feel is much more Greenwich Village with everything from The Ramones to Billy Idol on the stereo! The real reason Inside Out is a Must Visit however, is the divine and delicious food. Brunch includes full veggie and english breakfasts, eggs benedict, kedgeree, pancakes and fruit and eggs with soldiers. I ordered the latter yesterday and was delighted when they arrived in a joint eggcup with matching chicken covers!! The lunch menu is just as extensive with a wide range of freshly made bagels, panninis, dips and chips, salads and daily specials. The prices are incredibly reasonable - think £3-£8 for mains - and the drinks menu includes refreshing juices, smoothies, teas and coffees. Go by all means but come Saturday brunch, I want the table with the most sun!

When they're combined into award-winning cakes, flans or tarts however, I find them pretty hard to resist. Yesterday for example, I popped into Cocoa to grab a coffee and pain au chocolat for the train and ended up leaving with a meringue and a bag of pastel coloured macaroons. Both were so damn deeeeeelicious that I'm already planning to go back and sample some of the other deserts on offer. Next time, I might start with a Raspberry and Passion Fruit Delice or a Slow Cooked Apple Tart followed by a slice of Tiger Cake or Coffee and Walnut Cake. The thing I've been dreaming about however, is Cocoa's Vanilla and Raspberry Eclairs.

That and the fact that beyond smoothies and cakes, everything else is a little bland. In terms of the other cafes in the area, Utopia does come up a little short, with little worth having beyond the excellent smoothies and the lovely cake. And the cake is heavenly... succulent, sweet, cheap: a deliciously naughty treat! Combine it with a smoothie to feel slightly better about it, as they too are delightful. I recommend trying something you haven't had before: there are some really excellent surprises! I won't spoil them here, but get out of your comfort zone. So, another cafe in the North Laines... This gelato shop is open late. Until midnight I stumbled in at around 10:30 and found it to be quite full. I got one of two clean tables after ordering. I looked at the menu and it was overwhelming. So many choices. I got the Sweet Treat and my goodness that thing should have a disclaimer that it's approximately a foot tall. Vanilla gelato swirls like whipped cream topped with two cookies and a cookie straw. Beneath the vanilla gelato is chocolate gelato, a banana, peanut butter, whipped cream, Oreos crumbles, and who knows what else is deeper than I could possibly ever venture. I was proud of myself for eating roughly a third. Not proud because it was bad, because it was quite quite good. But proud because I made that much of a dent due to the sheer size

Slightly disappointed, but thought I should still try the so called "best coffee on Lewes Road" even if I wasn't going to stay and eat. It was, erm, not even close. I was slightly concerned as I watched it being prepared in a pretty lacklustre manner, and then I was handed my takeaway cup. Too hot to hold. Oh dear. Just tasted of Burnt™. Nevermind. At least I got to pay contactless on my phone.
