That Little Tea Shop In The Lanes - Earl Grey

On this trip, in mid June 2025, we'd promised our American daughter a proper British "Cream Tea"…read more.. Somehow, we didn't expect to find it in Brighton, but this was the perfect place for it! After a long walk from Brighton Marina to the Pier, and a lot of shopping in The Lanes, we were ready for an Afternoon Tea! This Tea Shop is in the heart of "The Lanes", a picturesque location amidst brightly coloured shops, cafes and restaurants, in narrow, winding alleyways that make for a unique shopping area. It was lucky we went in at 4.30pm... They close at 5pm, but we were welcomed in as one of the last guests before they announced they were closed. It also meant we not only got a table, but the place started clearing out before we'd finished, so we ended up being the last customers, which was nice. It's a cute, cozy little tea shop, pretty on the outside and inside, with pictures of Brighton on the walls and an eclectic mixture of teapots, milk jugs and cups. It had been many years since I'd last had a "cream tea" and this didn't disappoint. We ordered some fruit scones and some plain scones (both were yummy but I recommend the fruit ones - the raisins & sultanas are really plump and juicy!). We also tried our scones both ways - cream then jam (the Devon way), and jam then cream (the Cornish way)... I'd been brought up the Devon way, but discovered the Cornish way is actually more to my liking! Both were yummy! We didn't buy any cakes, but the cakes (as well as the scones) are made fresh daily and looked delicious. And I must say, the tea itself was fresh and superior quality - loose leaf English breakfast, rather than bagged, really makes a difference. Our server was very sweet and friendly, and then, at the end, since we were the last customers, the shop owner came out to talk to us, and was super friendly and welcoming... She asked where we were from (always fun, as I'm British, but my husband and daughter are American). Despite it being the end of her day, she didn't rush us out at all, and enjoyed chatting with us. The whole thing was a delightful experience.

The place was packed on a super hot day in Brighton and the staff kept the place hopping. Enjoyed cucumber sandwiches and the most delicious scones and clotted cream. A true English tea house!

This is a humble independent cafe selling decent coffee and excellent home cooked food. The owner Elina hails from the Oseta region of south Russia and has brought some of the local cooking knowledge with her to breezy Brighton, and you can tell. The food is exquisite, cooked to perfection and the menu is packed with inventive recipes. Specials change regularly and there is plenty of choice on the regular menu. I recommend the Oseta's House, a delightful dish of scrambled egg with halloumi, tomato, and spinach... it really is to die for! Coffee is good (to this writer's taste buds anyway, but I'm no coffee aficionado) and there are plenty of other choices on the drinks menu. Honestly, if you haven't been here you need to get down immediately. Right now. Drop what you're doing this instant. You won't regret it.

I had the avocado and smoked salmon on sourdough the first time and the fennel sausage and lentil stew the second time. I also had a brilliant fresh lemon and ginger tea and the staff were brilliant - really chatty and friendly, but not invasive. It was the right balance between informal and professional and I really appreciated it. I even left with a slice of Guinness cake (which was to die for). I really love this little spot, and certainly will be back to try the meat and cheese dishes.

There's a big variety of seating options and I opted to sit in the back room where I enjoyed my drink and book in peace. The women who run the place were very kind. Unbelievably awful!…read more We had two baked potatoes tuna and cheese. The potatoes came in soaked in butter from the bottom, the cheese was frozen cold, and the tuna was as chunky as it came from the can they didn't bother to break it down! Neither did they took the effort to warm the cheese !! The salad on the side tasted like eating Mayo from the jar!! We also had a latte. And this is for real!! 2/3 the cup is foam!!! When I removed and I asked for more milk (nicely) the girl who made the coffee took it personally and started trash talking me behind the counter as if I wasn't there. I wanted to return my food after the first bite and leave the place but cause I payed for it I felt bullied to set and digest the uncomfortable situation I was in. Recommendation: stop hiring people because you want to offer jobs and take your business into consideration. You need to hire a new cook and a new barista !! I can see that you take reviews here into action, and the location of your business is on point, and that you're taking a good care of the place. Just a bit effort in hiring and recruiting process and you'll be the next great thing there, especially the competition you have inside the station, plenty of great restaurants and cafes. Good luck!

I requested coffee, and pulled out my card, in a very gracious manner, he said, "...no problem, you can pay later; please sit and enjoy first" He also came by, and voluntarily gave me the wifi pwd (never had that experience before!) Vibe - several people came in and out, and you could tell that they were locals, who enjoyed hanging out at this cafe (making it a true cafe). I would be a regular, if I lived in Brighton!
