    Inner City Youth Opportunities

In 1993, the Inner City Youth Opportunities organization was founded by Jeanne and Phillip Bell…read more They saw inner city children struggling in the classroom and with family problems, and they wanted to help. Seeing the positive impact that sports has on the development of children, the Bells took to combining their love of tennis with helping local inner city kids succeed in the classroom and out in the real world. By combining tennis, academic intervention, and youth development programs the ICYO strives to teach the children important life skills to succeed (according to ICYO Newsletter and website). Through the Academic Intervention Program, the ICYO offers tutoring and homework help four days a week, assisting with anything from reading, writing, and spelling to organization skills, math, and even computer/keyboarding. During the summer months, Mrs. Bell runs a tennis program at Withrow High School, Monday through Thursday for three hours. I was a volunteer three years ago and it was such a great experience and it felt really good to help the many children with their tennis, watch them enjoy it, and just to be their friend while I was there. Transportation (and meals) to all ICYO events is free, and for those really interested in tennis, they will take them around to play in the area tournaments. Although I was too young to see it at the time, playing in these tournaments and sometimes seeing the Bells spending their Friday and Saturday nights watching their program's kids play tennis is truly remarkable. The best thing is when they issue their seasonal newsletter and you can read some of the success stories. The most important thing to the Bells and their staff and many volunteers is teaching the children life skills and leading them down the right path towards earning a high school degree. In the summer tennis program in 2005, I worked alongside a man who was ICYO's first high school graduate in 2000, an honors student and National Honors Society member, and then a 2005 graduate of Kent State University where he was on scholarship for football. Without the ICYO program, it's not likely he would have been able to achieve what he did, and he recognized that, which is why he gave back to the program in which he grew up. Inner City Youth Opportunities is an excellent program and the number of nationally and community-based partnerships they are involved in shows that too. Whether it's from tutoring, tennis, or a trip to a Xavier basketball game or Camp Ernst, for example, ICYO provides great opportunities for inner city children of Cincinnati to have fun, while also growing as both persons and students. It's truly outstanding and touching what the Bells have been doing these last 15 years with the ICYO program, and I'm glad to have been a part of it.

Also, if you come here and have extra plastic grocery bags laying around, bring them in so that the cashiers can reuse them! I will be doing this every time I return. Shout out to Larry!

Everything is organized by size and category which is helpful. The men's, kids, and household section is in the back. These areas are quite small. I'm assuming the store simply does not receive ample amount of donations in this area. I went with 50% off, and felt the discounted price I paid should be the original price. For example I bought one old cotton long sleeve. Basic and it was $5 full price. Many times thrift stores charge more than 50% of retail and this is a big issue for access. Speaking of accessibility. There is zero disability access into the store. This is a major problem. As a mom with a young child, I had to unload everything, including my child and carry everything with the stroller up the steep stairs. I try to walk to stores when able, and I couldn't simply throw the stroller in the car, or leave it outside in the rain. I'm not sure why a second hand store where many parents and disabled people shop would not have accessibility. I cannot imagine being in a wheelchair, being elderly, or having other physical ailments having this road block to a store that is supposed to be for the community.

They decided to call 5 hours into that window to tell me they weren't coming and I needed to reschedule. They refused to work within the hours I was available. no weekend appointments available. I understand that things happen and changes need to be made, I however do not feel that it is acceptable to not make concessions to my schedule by giving me a time that they will arrive for a reschedule. I am told that if I am not here, I am charged and will have to reschedule. They were the ones to cancel after 5 hours on the day of the appointment, they should be able to at the very least schedule for the first appointment of the day! Update...I was contacted a few hours later and was able to get an appointment scheduled and a convenient time. I appreciated that they took the time to contact me and assist by working within my schedule. As stated previously, I understood that there are emergency situations that can cause delays and or cancelations that are unforseen. I appreciate that they were able to work within my availability to reschedule the appointment.

At the time, we were very satisfied that they worked to make things right. We've had the current HVAC for 8 months and it has stopped working. A technician came Friday and confirmed that someone would be here Monday to fix it. No one has shown up. We called and they said we are not on the schedule and someone will get back to us. No one has returned our call. We are going on day 10 with no AC, receiving little to no communication and no sense of urgency. This is not what I expect after spending $18,000 and pay for their Maintenance Plan. We've now purchased portal AC units to get us by until this is fixed. I have little confidence in their products and services and would highly recommend you look elsewhere
