I don't want anyone to know how good Cranky's is! I want to keep Cranky's a secret and keep Greg and his workshop all to myself! What can I say though? Along with fine amp repair Greg at Cranky's lives and breathes guitars: acoustic, electric and basses of all kinds. Greg Reynard at Cranky's has maintained, repaired and modded my amps and guitars and other gear for 8 years now. He takes expert care of both of my vintage blackface Vibrolux Reverbs. He resurrected a musty container purchase of mine: an odd little 1965 1x12'' two-channel stereo Ampeg M-12A Mercury aka 'The Deluxe Killer'. Once Greg was through with it that thing could scream and sounded better than I thought was possible! Wait until Greg mods your blackface Bassman the way he modded mine: sweet-sounding Fender cleans out of one channel and honking early Marshall out of the other! Tell him what modifications to your amp you want. He's been repairing and modding amps since 1984 chances are he not only can do the modification he may have invented it! I'm a guitar player in Framingham. I need a serious luthier and amp tech that I can trust. I can't find that in a neighborhood music store or a faceless big block chain store. Cranky's is a straight shot from Framingham down 495 to Rte.140 (Commercial St.) to West St. in Mansfield. read more

I was in the tone dumps. My Orange Rockerverb 50 MKII, which I paid an arm, a leg and sled of meat for wasn't acting up to snuff. I called on Greg, and he told me to sojourn to his place in Mansfield. I arrived at his homestead and descended the small staircase to his workshop, where he warmly greeted me and got to work. The Orange had lost it's battle-ready tones and was feeling fizzy and meager in the top end on the distortion channel. He had me plug in my string shovel and I got to work demonstrating how I used the amp in my pillaging raids. Greg tried this tube and that, in various combinations, and the instrument came alive. I felt the wind in my (little) hair and soon I was rowing not only toward the shores of Tone Village, but straight up into Tone VALHALLA. Greg, I salute you. I may not be Odin Flashingfingers, but your work has made me feel like at least Loki Limberdigits. I will henceforth bring every ailing amp I acquire straight to your homestead, and I urge others to do the same. Take heart! It may not be you, it may be your amp, and Cranky's is where you go when it's your amp. Thanks Greg! read more

I'll start by saying that the experience of the 1 star reviewer must be reviewing a similar business in another dimension. This is not the Cranky's / guitarrepair.com that I've known and done business with for the last ten years. Let's just say I suspect there's more to the story ... and leave it at that. On many occasions, I've witnessed trouble shooting of many a tube amp. And I can tell you first hand, Cranky will not only fix it, yet go above and beyond; from rewiring /re-soldering shoddy workmanship without charge, ( you'll never know this) to offering pre-emptive itemized alternative recommendations personally delivered by phone call, on the work to be done. He knows the circuitry, will spend time with you to translate what you want, whether it's a specific feel on the guitar or sound from an amp. If you want your stuff fixed the proper way, by someone who knows their shit, in this field which also has its share of hacks , bring it to Cranky's. You might even establish a friendship with one hell of an 'exemplary' human being. read more

I've been playing guitar for 35+ years and in all that time i have learned that finding a good guitar/amp repair tech is a lot like finding a good mechanic for your car. You want someone you trust, who will not try to sell you on getting work done you don't need, as well as keeping the price down and still doing top quality work. Greg at Crankys Repair is one of THE best experiences I've had in dealing w/ a guitar/amp tech. Greg was VERY knowledgeable and was super easy to talk to. My guitar had a broken jack, bad intonation and volume issues. Greg fixed it while i waited and made it sound better than new! He actually talked me OUT of getting some modifications that I really didn't need. Greg's price was more than fair and it was a great pleasure to shoot the breeze with him after the repair was done. I urge anyone who needs quality work done by really nice, knowledgeable guy to give Greg a call. From now on its the only place I will take my gear for repair. Thanks Greg ! read more

If you live in RI or Southern Mass then this is the place to go. I've used a few different amp techs in RI, and none were as knowledgeable, friendly, and thorough in their explanations as Greg - owner of Cranky's. So many other amp techs just replace parts without testing... not Greg. I can honestly say that my vintage 67 Deluxe Reverb sounds 100 percent better after bringing it in to him. He also does amazing Guitar work! His set ups, fret work, and custom guitar wiring, are just on another level. My vintage strat and warmoth custom play so much smoother and sound much better after he worked on them. The man is a genius with all things guitar and Tube amp related! What more can you ask for - technical prowess, friendly demeanor, and fair pricing! read more

I am an experienced musician who has been playing for over 50 years and needed a relatively quick turn around on a new (high end) guitar I just purchased. Greg was able to take care of my request and turn it around to fit my needs. When I went to pick it up the guitar I was blown away. The guitar played and sounded absolutely perfect. I couldn't have asked for anything better. Greg's attention to detail and workmanship is off the charts. Greg explained all the what and why's of what he did and wanted to make sure I was happy before he would let it leave his shop. I've now found the only person who I will let touch my guitars when work is needed. I couldn't be happier with the quality of workmanship and service. read more

Finding a knowledgeable repair shop is difficult. I was in a jam and a band mate referred me to Cranky's. My 1965 Fender Vibrolux Reverb was not sounding the way it should and with an upcoming gig, I needed it repaired. Greg did a fantastic job! Not only did he fix the issue, he went through the entire amp and performed a thorough analysis and tune up. I was amazed, because my amp is fixed, but has never sounded better. I make my living as a professional musician, and Greg understood my needs and moved my amp to the front of the queue. Thank you Greg! You have a customer for life and I will be recommending you to everyone. read more

Cranky's is hands down the best place to bring your tube gear to be fixed, modded, or upgraded. Greg, the owner is possibly the best amp tech, guitar luthier, etc. not just in New England, but posdibly the world! His knowledge & abilities are truly second to none! I have brought my gear on tours throughout the world & seen other techs long the way, but could not wait to get home & have Greg @ Cranky's take the time to do it right. Not to mention, if you want that something extra or special out of your amp, he will always find a way to do it. His experience & knowledge cannot be beat. - Nick P. read more

Greg is, by far, the best amp tech in Massachusetts. He will take every possible minute to address your concerns, and you will be floored by the results. I play metal through a Blackstar HT Stage 60. Greg took several hours with me to custom tailor the tubes to my exact desires. I asked him to make my amp sound like "X", and he made it sound even better. I've played the same model amp without the tubes he helped me select, and it sounds like GARBAGE. I cannot recommend Greg and Cranky's enough. He is the most honorable and highly skilled professional you will ever deal with. Period. read more

This guy truly is the real deal. I brought my amp in with what what I thought was a fairly major problem, and while it was there I was interested in improving the tone of the amp. Based what I told him about how and what I play, he took my Traynor YCW40WR and made everything I liked about it better and improved everything I didn't like about it. He literally transformed my amp! On top of that, my "fairly major" problem turned out to be an easy fix. His friendly and inviting demeanor made it all an enjoyable process as well. Highly recommended. read more

Fantastic job on my Hot rod Deluxe amp. Nothing but the sound of the guitar comes out of the speaker. Well worth the wait. Greg thoroughly went through the amp and replaced and tweaked what needed for the better of the amp. Greg's years of experience give him plenty of foresight going in. I believe this amp is a better amp now than when it was new. I recommend Cranky's. I can say Greg is very meticulous when it comes to his work. Thanks Greg Joe Lido read more

I brought my 5 watt Valve Jr. to Greg because it wasn't quite loud enough to play with drums. He left the original circuit intact and added an additional 15 watt circuit. Now I can play either circuit or both through two cabinets. His approach was unexpected and really imaginative! Greg turned my stupid little amp into a monster! I couldn't be happier! read more
