David at the Post Office organised all our groceries before we arrived and since then has provided us with a beautiful whisky. The islanders are all so friendly, and although it was November and the weather wasn't brilliant we had such a warm welcome, that it is going to be hard not to return. You must however, love isolation. But what a place to get in some walking, cycling and watching the world go by on the loch and plenty of photo opportunites.

The West Nile Street post office is a medium sized, quite busy branch but I think they manage it…read moreok. There are three sets of service desks: Self-service, business, travel and everything else. I forget how they labelled this one but it seemed to be for just regular non-business customers. There was a long queue when I arrived but they cleared it pretty quickly, I don't think I waited as much as five minutes to post my parcel. The staff member helping me was friendly and helpful enough although not very on the ball. He did try to sell me a credit card which I've not seen before but maybe this is a new thing to try to get the Post Office to make more money. They also have some stationary and bits and pieces on sale, things like jiffy bags and bubble wrap and they're advertising a deak at the moment where you can get cheap travel insurance when you get your travel money with them. It's handy enough if you're in the city centre but it's a little but chaotic and I suspect at peak times those queues get really long.

There are lots of cheap toys, cheap jewellery and greetings cards. Plenty of inexpensive Scottish souvenirs including mugs and clocks too. The couple who run it are exceptionally polite ,the chap is an absolute gentleman,its also not a gossip shop,no crowds of locals lingering at the counter blething,service is polite,super efficient,fast,considering the size of it,there tskpbles outside looking out to the water,an atm,great coffee,this place was a lifeline for me during severe weather,being able to buy a sausage roll,a proper one,some bacon,eggs etc,was brilliant as I was very ill,indeed I ended up hospitalised with sepsis . I must finally mention surely the cheeriest ,most lovely assistant in the land,Andrea,she always looks son happy and genuinly pleased to see you whether your buying a paper,or spending a tenner,again,they don't want to know your life story,your gossip,sometimes it's the case that the places who appear friendly are actually anythun but,youl never get anything but polite ,efficient, old fashioned service Non I islanders,please note its half day here on Wednesday,close at 1pm. Now though, the post office is franchised to the Spar that it co-locates with. Result being, it's the Spar staff who now man the post office counter. Which is great. They know what they're doing and they're just plain nice whilst they're doing it! Not much else to say really, it sells stamps, takes in packages and does most of the range of post office services. No bureau de change though.

An Crubh was a great introduction to the Isle of Skye, just a few miles north after we arrived on…read morethe ferry from Mallaig. It is a real anchor for the local community- good for travelers but not a tourist trap. We purchased maps and got great local information. The staff throughout the center were attentive and very helpful. The cafe offered a good selection of coffee/cappuccino, soups and sandwiches, and dessert/snacks. Specials and other lunch fare was available. Seating was bright and airy, with great views out the large picture windows. The general store has staples, fresh breads, fruits, vegetables, and local specialty products. The Post Office was a surprising plus- a great help for travelers. The meeting space is open and inviting- a great addition to the local community.

Got all we needed for fair prices…read more We've been staying at the Loch Awe at a pretty remote Hotel. We came to Inveraray for a quick visit a needed some groceries for dinner. So we went into Londis here to have a look. It was quite a (positive) surprise to find everything we needed. Veggies, milk, cream, pasta, chicken breast and more. Not just that. You might expect it to have a bit higher prices than your average chain. But no, prices were really fair and not far away from the big chains. Quality of the products are good too. So, it is a good place to stock up your fridge if you're in town (or around).

It's…read moresurprisingly large inside and the shelves are fully stacked with just about all the groceries you'd need, fresh, tinned, frozen, chilled - and there are lots of snacks (pies, sandwiches, cakes) to take away too. You can also buy various drinks, newspapers, magazines, maps, even coal for your open fire! There's a useful petrol filling station immediately outside too. The lady who served me was very pleasant and friendly so I'll be back for more supplies next time I'm in that area!
