It was not just any Saturday; it was the weekend before Thanksgiving when most were leaving town and work early to prepare for their holiday festivities! I was not in SF for just a weekend visit, but I had just learned I was unexpectedly going to be there for the 2 weeks (to help family recover from surgery). I was a visitor in a sort of unfamiliar town, and the day and time was the worse. (My family's dentist was closed for the week; my friend's dentist won't open until Tuesday.) While I was prepared to have to wait through the weekend to find a dentist, I went to Yelp to see who if my luck could find one willing to take me in. By the time I called Bay Area Smile, it was around 6pm already. (Google.com listed them as closed, but Yelp had them posted as open until 7pm.) The lady on the other line was professional, but mentioned they had just taken in their last patient and the soonest they can book me was for Tuesday. Okay, fine, I booked it. I didn't have my dental insurance info handy with me when I booked my appointment, but realized I can get all that info using a mobile app. After calling a few more dentists around, I called Bay Area Smiles to provide my dental insurance info. A different voice answered and the man on the other lines said they can take me in as long as I get there by 6:30pm. Really???!!! Done. Despite having dental insurance and being a first-time patient, they were unable to verify my insurance due to the time & day. Totally makes sense. I was dreading to have to pay close to $1,000. I had no idea how much these stuff costs - x-ray, photos (I didn't expect that. My Beverly Hills doc didn't even do that for me!), anesthesia, overtime, being in San Francisco, and all the other things. They worked on my tooth until 8pm (again, I have to mention, this is on a Saturday night before the holidays) and my bill cost less than the cheapest iPad you can buy on a Black Friday. That was the icing on the cake. No, the real icing on the cake was how good her work was. I was not keen on the first impressions I got on the building she was in, but, boy, was I reminded that -- first impressions don't mean a thing when you're dealing with real talent. I have not been happy with my last two dentists of the past 3 decades -- one was smack in Beverly Hills's Golden Triangle because I wanted a dentist who catered to prickly people and had state-of-the-art equipment. Yeah, he catered to big celebrities too, which made my visits amusing -- but he I felt his needles and up-sell. All 3 dentists in my past have had great first impressions, wonderful locations and waiting area -- but I would not mind flying all the way to SF to see Dr.Q. Su. I later found out she had a good chunk of years prior to starting her own practice as a pediatric dentist. I love that. I think every dentist should have that same experience. No wonder I didn't feel her needle at all. She made me feel like I shouldn't mind or dread seeing a dentist. In summary, I highly, highly recommend her to anyone in the San Francisco city or Bay Area. After inspecting my tooth and taking photos of it, she showed me what's up and talked me through options and what kind of dentist I should look for in Los Angeles for a more permanent solution. She knew I was not going to be a returning patient, yet she gave me the care and service as if she's been taking care of me for decades. I repeatedly asked about my painful teeth and was eventually told that a tooth, which wasn't bothering me, needed a crown. When I requested a treatment plan, they told me the don't send these to patients and they were waiting for insurance to respond. Despite corresponding with them for over two months, I still did not receive a cost estimation for the crown. I then requested my records for a second opinion as I was being offered no solution for the pain I was experiencing from my other teeth. They refused to send them directly to me and ignored my home dental office's request until they were threatened with a board report. Their response was passive-aggressive, implying "any competent dentist would run their own tests." After that, I knew I couldn't go back, as I feel they would retaliate for me seeking a second opinion. This experience showed me that they prioritize expensive procedures over patient care. Although the practice may look professional, their treatment of patients seeking a second opinion is unprofessional and greedy. The other negative reviews about this place SAY THE EXACT SAME THING. Listen to them, and if you know how to advocate for yourself, avoid this office. They will take advantage of naive people.
