Most people, including myself, dread going to the dentist, let alone an oral surgeon. I was super nervous when I showed up for my initial consultation. Doctor McDow put me at ease right away. He spent the first 15 minutes just chatting with me about what field of work I am in, and we learned we both had a passion for running. I have never had a medical professional spend so much time just getting to know me on a personal level. He then explained the entire treatment process in detail and really put me at ease. I never felt rushed that day or any other day I have come into that office. About two weeks later, I came back for my tooth extraction and bone graft. Again - I was super nervous. Doctor McDow and Betty were great! The procedure went flawlessly. Afterward, they let me take as much time as I needed to fully wake up and recover. They even left one of their personal cell phones next to me playing music as I was waking up! I went home, and the first few days I had questions about my recovery. Dr. McDow was really nice and did a great job, however, because of the admin staff, I won't be back. They charged me for services in full, even though I have insurance and then never filed a claim for me. When I called they said, of course, we'll file a claim for you, but three months later and still nothing. To make matters worse, they made me complete an online survey before the visit that required about 30 minutes of my time AND the survey asked all kinds of questions about my insurance. So sad, because I really liked Dr. McDow. UPDATE: After sending a fax that hinted that I was a Yelp! user, my husband received a call asking for his credit card number so he could be reimbursed for all charges. We also received a voicemail indicating that they had sent the paperwork to the insurance, but that the insurance had lost or messed-up the paper work. I have no way of knowing if what she said was true, but I do know that in the eight years that I have gone to my dentist, I have never had any trouble with insurance payments. I believe that the insurance company messes up (a lot), but I think other offices may follow-up when they notice something is amiss (because they rely on the insurance for their money and don't charge the patient up front). I came here because I had to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted. From start to finish, this office exceeded my expectations. Everyone I dealt with --- receptionists, nurses, and the doctor --- was professional yet personable and friendly, and gave me all of the information I needed. Dr. McDow is exactly the type of personality that I like to deal with in the health care domain. He's smart and well-spoken, and doesn't talk down or make you feel like you're being rushed out. 6 stars for bedside manner. During the consultation, everything went quickly, and I was given a very detailed look at what I was about to get into, all of the potential risks, and how likely those risks were for me. After the consultation, Pat at the front desk contacted my insurance company and straightened out all of the details about my coverage, what I had available, what I needed to pay, etc. Given the huge number of complaints on other doctor/dentists comment rolls about misquoting insurance coverage, this was a HUGE win for this office. The procedure itself was way easier than I expected. I guess it helped that I had IV sedation. Getting the IV inserted was the worst part: I've never had an IV, and the thought of it kind creeped me out. The nurses were oh-so-supportive, and not condescending at all. They made me feel very relaxed, and got me through it quickly. The last thing I remember is Dr. McDow telling me I had good blood pressure. The next thing I knew, I felt *very* good, and couldn't feel my mouth. They were done. The healing procedure has been a piece of cake. I've hardly needed pain-killers (only when I get crazy and try to eat something that's too hard to chew). After hearing way too many horror stories about the tribulations of the days after extraction, I am counting myself quite fortunate to have been in such good hands. If you live in or near SF, and you need wisdom tooth extraction, run, don't walk, to Dr. McDow's office and get 'er done! read more

Need your wisdom teeth out? I got a guy. Dr. McDow & his staff were great. My tooth was below the gumline & possibly encased in bone, so they recommended sedation for the procedure. They managed to cut that sucker out & get me into recovery in about 30 minutes, then they let me rest up for awhile before sending me on my way with meds. I even got a follow-up phonecall later on in the evening from the good Doctor himself checking in to see how I was feeling. When one anticipates the extraction of wisdom teeth, a new expectation should be synonymous with nervousness: poorly executed Dentist jokes. As was the case when I recently visited Dr. McDow's office for the removal of my one wisdom tooth (I'm very evolved). In consideration of how many people come into a dentist's office that are beside themselves with anxiety, it will come as no surprise that the staff will try to 'lighten the mood' with a few corny jokes. Personally, I love a good joke here and there-but when I was in for my consult the one-liners being slung around the dentist's chair were coming much too frequently, in my humble opinion. What made matters worse was the fact that the dental assistant was just guffawing at every little un-humorous and probably repetitive joke that was uttered. I felt like I was on a hidden camera show. The extraction date itself went much smoother. Being a habitual Law and Order SVU viewer, I did not want to be put under for my procedure and settled with local anesthesia. I have to hand it to Dr. McDow, for all of his corny jokes and little annecdotes, he was in and out of my mouth in approximately five minutes. It felt just like High School. They even let me wear headphones during the procedure, so instead of listening to the cracking of my tooth and scraping open of my gums I was listening to the heavenly intonations of the Ronettes. At one point, the three heads of the dental assistant, the woman shadowing her (which does not usually happen, they were just training her), and the Dentist were all within my line of vision, hovering close enough to my ear buds to hear the music and were all bobbing their heads in tune. I wish I could have taken a video. I highly recommend this office for their friendly, caring and 'humorous' staff, and am glad that I was referred here for my extraction. If I was born with more than one wisdom tooth, I would not want it to be removed by anyone else but Dr. McDow. read more

OK so... I am also one of those people who waited until my early 30s to have my wisdom teeth extracted, partly out of financial hardship, but mostly because I'm totally chicken-shit. Alas, the time came when the back of my mouth started feeling like a junk yard and I had to face the facts. I was referred to Dr McDow by my dentist Dr Felton, whom I trust wholeheartedly. I want to make it point to mention that before my consultation appointment, I started to experience some serious discomfort on one side of my mouth. Dr McDow was great in expediting the whole process. The front office and support staff are compassionate and empathetic. In particular, the doctor's right-hand woman (whose name escapes me at the moment, dang it) was AWESOME. She was thorough in explaining the procedure and very accommodating in addressing all my irrational phobias. They even furnished me with some Valium to calm my nerves prior to the procedure. Recovery time was almost non-existent. Very minimal bleeding and pain. I felt completely stupid for acting like such a ninny. Truly an extraordinarily easy experience. I was more afraid of being put under than of the operation itself. That being said, I had originally opted for local anesthesia but was coaxed into general (IV) anesthesia at the last minute, which is a decision I don't necessarily regret. However, it turns out general anesthesia was not covered by my insurance, which resulted in a very hefty bill. If I were to make one suggestion, it would be to mention this detail (or the possibility) at the time of consultation (or at least prior to being put in the chair). Came in for a consult about an implant and the extraction of my long overdue wisdom teeth. Dr. is extremely personable and thus far I have had no billing problems with the office - They billed my insurance (MetLife), 18 and change went unpaid (after consult appt), I sent them the balance in the mail. So far, no kickback. Their billing honored MetLife's fee schedule and was seemingly in line with market-price. I found them to be the most honest seeming office on the business end. That said, the Dr advocated the longest implant treatment plan timeline of all three surgeons I consulted. I don't know what that was about. But, as everyone has different clinical judgement (based on a combine of their own experience and let's hope empirical data) and assesses situations differently, I will presume he had his reasons. He also comped the x-ray as the one from the previous surgeon was supposedly not of diagnostic quality as per notes from another dentist I saw in-between. I ultimately went with a different surgeon who was comfortable with a shorter timeline. But, I'd be comfortable with this surgeon as a person otherwise. read more

So like everyone else I waited months to get a molar with a cracked root extracted. Made an appointment with Dr. McDow (as refered by my excellent dentist Dr. Sonny Joseph) for the extraction. Prepped and sedated by Dr. McDow and his top notch team, the procedure began. Even though I was sedated I was conscious and kept waiting for the tooth to come out. Next thing I know I'm done and ready to go home. The procedure took about 15 painless minutes total including bone graft and sutures. Hard to be happy with a day of dental drama like the one I just had, but I am happy. And, I am happy because of the 3 lovely doctors, and their staffs, who were a part of making my day endurable. These three Drs. are: Dr. Felton, Dr. Machule, and Dr. McDow. I'll mention each Doctor on his own page, but wanted to list all three together on every page. So, tooth extraction was the order from Dr. Machule, and David from Dr. Felton called Dr. McDow, who graciously agreed to fit me into his day. Despite his having gone to Michigan (Go IRISH), I liked him right away. His staff was superb. From the nice women who handled my paper work at various points, to the staffers who helped in my extraction - everyone gave lots of info, covered every question, and made sure I knew everything that went and would go on. And the woman who gave my post-op instructions was really clear and gave me info in a way I could remember - so I am especially grateful to her. And, Dr. McDow himself - rockstar. He explained everything really well, actually read my paperwork (so nice when you fill out all those forms and they read them), and was great about making sure I was well taken care of. This was a nasty extraction of a back upper molar. But he was great. He talked about things I cared about to me, to distract from injection and extraction pressure and pain. I laughed a lot (I do when I am nervous), and he just rolled with it. We talked about wills and inheritance law, which I love, and I cannot imagine he does, because he could tell it put me (a recent law school grad nerd) at ease. I am only 4 hours into the post extraction day. So, I cannot yet vouch that all was a success, but Dr. McDow was so great, that I have to imagine it was smooth and successful. All in all, for having a molar yanked out by its roots, this was a glorious experience. read more

The original oral surgeon recommend by my periodontist does not accept my insurance so I searched my insurance website & checked Dr. McDow's other yelp reviews. (He did not perform any procedures.) Having implants can be real daunting, but you can be rest assured, you are in good hands with Dr. McDow and his team. His many years of invaluable expertise, gentle manner, detailed explanations (with much patience as I would ask repeatedly to understand the process), and his witty sense of humor will put you at immediate ease. My procedure was complicated but it was with very little pain (for a big procedure), however a complication arose due to a manufacturer's faulty implant, but it was rectified during the surgery - luckily for his precise and ortho expertise. The post surgery team was especially attentive, made sure I was warm and comfortable, in their spa lounge chairs/blankets and gave me as much time needed for recovery prior to leaving. Overall a smooth process with the administration/insurance, coordination with appointments, surgery dates, prescription of medication, etc. If you require any regular simple ortho surgery to complicated ortho work - Dr. McDow is the one to go to! I'd avoid this office if you do not want to share my experience of exchanging more than 23 emails with the staff and still waiting for a refund of $900 that they overcharged me in March of 2016. To be clear, 5 months ago. I am sad to say I usually trust my medical professionals to bill me appropriately (and I have good big-company insurance coverage). The only reason I paid attention to this procedure's bills is because during my wisdom teeth surgery, Dr. McDow decided that he could only take one (not two) of the wisdom teeth out. I had prepaid for both so I was making sure I followed up for the refund. I did eventually get the refund for the one tooth but then discovered on my insurance statement that I was not responsible for almost $900 of the charges I had prepaid. I sent everything to the office and they (after speaking to the insurance carrier) confirmed I was not responsible and they would get me a refund. I have all of the emails and correspondence, and am an attorney so plan to continue to follow up - even if solely on principle. I am writing this because I am 100% correct and they have not disputed it - but the fact that I have had to follow up with them multiple times each month to try to get them to issue the refund is why I write this - no one has time for this. So sad to have this experience when medical procedures and insurance is already so complex and hard to understand. read more

The worst experience I've every had with any medical professional. 3 months later I am still in shock in how I was treated, during and after my oral surgery. There was a medical plan that was made. This plan was not carried out by Dr McDow. I was given a medication I specifically asked to be not to given. Not only was Dr McDow unapologetic, he was rude condicending and unprofessional. I will never ever step foot in that office again; nor would I recommend anyone to seek treatment from Dr McDow. He should have his license and practice reviewed. Dr. McDow is absolutely awesome. His office was able to squeeze me in with very little notice and restrictive insurance timing (I had surgery 6/7 and my insurance expired 6/11). I had to get two teeth ("12 year molars") extracted. The surgery itself was painless (I was so drugged, I couldn't care less what was happening around me) and he made a somewhat complicated procedure seem simple and straightforward. He explained the surgery and aftercare concisely, cohesively, and efficiently. His staff were fabulous as well. I have been a patient of Dr McDow and under his good care for nearly three years. I first came to him when I had a dreadful abscess under one of my molars. I did not want to lose this precious "chewing" tooth. Via Dr. McDow's skillful interdiction, the affected tooth did not fall prey to the infectious process but was restored to good health via Dr. McDow's swift surgical intervention. To continue, I have had and continue to have my fair share of dental treatment. Over the years, I've experienced copious bone loss in my maxillary ridge in addition to the loss of three teeth compliments of a motor vehicle accident. When my bone loss reached a point of adversely affected my speech and dentition,I returned to Dr. McDow for a consultation. In addition to the bone and gum defects, I asked Dr. McDow to replace my aging fix bridge with dental implants. I knew Dr. McDow had his work cut out for him because of the enormity of both the bone and gum loss, not to mention the missing teeth that I had hoped could be replaced with implants. Dr. McDow did an in depth oral exam along and ordered a series of x-rays. I braced myself for the worse when Dr. McDow presented me with a very comprehensive and yet simple plan that had a strong potential to resolving the bone erosion, gum loss and missing teeth. And I found his fee to be very reasonable. I have now completed two of the three surgical interventions required for my treatment. And I can say without any reservation that Dr. McDow was unequivocally the right choice for my dental needs. Let me explain. The moment you enter Dr. McDow's office, any "white lab coat" apprehension you may be harboring dissipates quickly. The office is bright, airy and comfortable. The patient consultation rooms and treatment rooms offer privacy so that you are comfortable exchanging information with Dr. McDow. The staff welcome you in a sincere and warm manner. To be frank, from the moment you sign in at the front desk, you feel like everyone in the office treats you in such a manner that you feel they always have your best interest at heart. And they do. No sugar-coating, just the nuts and bolts of what it will take to treat your disorder or restore your dentition. In each of my surgeries, I gained some insight on how very competent a surgeon Dr. McDow is. It was quite apparent how meticulous Dr McDow is with all his instruments and dental supplies perfectly arranged on a large tray before me. I am a nurse who has worked around surgeons, and I can tell you good surgeons are persnickety about their instruments, equipment and the flow of things before, during and after the surgical procedure. Dr. McDow could easily take an award in this category. My surgeries always began with intravenous sedation. This procedure was painless. I often call Dr. McDow the Zen archer because he never misses the vein. Soon after starting the IV, I would hear Dr. McDow giving his assistants specific instructions when I simply went to sleep not really remembering anything else. I guess that's the hallmark of good sedation, not remembering much. Dr. McDow was just as meticulous about my post-surgical care, and he always called me on the evening of the day of surgery to check on my welfare. My procedures involved a good measure of pain, but I was well informed of that and well medicated for it so no surprises there. My bone restoration and dental implants are healing so very well that I am very encouraged by the good results. I am sure Dr. McDow made many sacrifices to become the fine surgeon he is. And I feel like I am one of the lucky ones to be the beneficiary of those sacrifices. If you are considering dental surgery, I believe Dr. McDow would be your best choice of surgeons. He is really focused on you and your dental needs. When you come to him, you have his complete and sincere attention to your problem. I don't live in SF so my dentist referred me to another Oral Surgeon but upon my mom's push I went and saw Dr. McDow for a consult 3 weeks ago and I had my wisdom teeth out by Dr McDow two weeks ago. After two other oral surgeons not wanting to touch my lower wisdoms because of the "proximity to the nerves" the brilliant Dr. McDow took those out with NO DAMAGE to my nerves. This review is for Dr. McDow in particular. Can't comment on insurance and billing just yet. I've put off my wisdom teeth extraction for years for one reason or another, despite every professional recommending I get them out. When one tooth decided to break through my gums and become a pain in the ass to clean, I finally decided to just get them all out. My dentist referred me to Dr. McDow. Dr. McDow is a super jolly, hilarious guy. He's like your favorite grandpa (if you're reading this Dr., I mean no offense by that!). I asked other professionals about him before my appointment and everyone spoke very highly of him. He's been around for a while and you can tell that he's still doing this because he loves his job. At the consultation, he instantly put me at ease, answered all my questions with a ton of scientific detail - which I want but rarely get from doctors - and the appointment didn't feel as though I waited an hour for five minutes worth of facetime, which is rare in the fee-for-service medical world. Dr. McDow even texts!! Thank god for someone who's reachable beyond the weekday 9-5 bullshit. The actual surgery went seamlessly as well. I didn't take any pain meds throughout the course of my recovery - and I'm willing to bet that it's because Dr. McDow is that skilled.
