His work is precise, methodical, and with a steady hand you can tell that he isn't rushing to get your teeth finished. He cares about your hygiene and your oral structure. But when I asked about scheduling a cleaning at the same time, I was told the wait for a teeth cleaning is a **minimum of 7 months**. Seven months. For a cleaning. When I pointed out that their website lists them as accepting new patients -- which is misleading if you can't actually get basic preventive care for the better part of a year -- I mentioned I'd be contacting Delta Dental to flag the discrepancy. I also asked to speak with the doctor directly. Dr. Kafayi got on the line and explained that it's a long-established practice with a significant backlog. Fair enough -- but here's the thing: if you have a 7-month backlog on cleanings, you are not meaningfully accepting new patients. You're just putting them on an indefinite waitlist. What really sealed the one-star review was how the call ended: mid-conversation, he wrapped up with a cheerful "have a great day" and hung up. No resolution, no apology, just... click. I was struggling to find a good dentist in the East Bay and ended up finding Dr. Kafayi in SF. I'm willing to make a special trek into the city for my teeth, and after my first visit, it was definitely worth it. The office is super clean, everything is sanitized, and the entire team is incredibly kind. As a plus, the office is on a pretty high floor in the building, so you can get some incredible views of the city in the waiting area or even in the dentist's seat. Dr. Kafayi checked each of my teeth individually and even took the time to do my teeth cleaning himself. For parking, I would recommend the Sutter Stockton garage -- it's cheap, big, and really close to the dentist. If you don't live in SF and are interested in coming here, you can always use appointments as an excuse to have fun in the city like I am! read more

My partial denture had a small piece broke off ten days ago. In the ensuing few days I continued to eat my meals with the partial denture, but my eating experience got progressive miserable such that I stopped using it until my teeth cleaning yesterday. After my hygienist did her part, Dr Kafayi came and heard my story. He patiently listened, looked at the broke off piece and the denture, asked me to put the denture on, examined and instructed his dental tech what to do with the denture. Ten minutes later, I had the denture to try it on and felt good. Now that I had three meals without any discomfort and slight pain with every chew, I am very grateful to everyone in the office who are friendly and worked so well. read more

My Delta HMO is a flimsy insurance. Also my mouth requires a host of pricey specialists. Because of that I have been trying to find other cheap ways to more comprehensive treatments. It simple said to leave your name & number, someone will call back. Left a few messages. One week later and no call back. If they can't return a simple call then I won't go here. This dentist is the worst. I have several crowns, and when I went to his office because of tooth pain, he asked me to remove them so he could see what was going on. I listened to him and spent 10k on new crowns, which he did. Now, my gums are inflamed, and my teeth are mobile because of how bad his work was. He also told me I had gum recession, and I did a gum transplant with another doctor he recommended, but it was just a waste of money. His work is terrible, and he will always ask you to do something else and pay him more. read more

I am very pleased with Dr. Kafayi and his team. They are all very professional, friendly and competent. His hygienist is very thorough. Dr. Kafayi always lets you know what he is about to do before doing it and makes sure you are comfortable. Surprisingly, his needles for numbing didn't hurt. Kaiser Senior Advantage plan has contracted with one of Delta Dental's plans which Dr. Kafayi accepts. If you are interested in having your teeth cleaned, the appointments are far out so schedule them as soon as possible. What a terrible dentist. They actually "canceled me" and refuse to see me because I did not do a crown in the time frame they recommended. I guess he really needs the money and tries to force people into doing expensive procedures. So the chip a tooth and started calling dentists on April 18th to see if someone could fit me in. So with wonderful lady at reception said yes we are taking new patients and can fit you right in. So he charges my insurance to do an exam and then states it will be August be for I can have the actual visit. What a scam artist. read more

I had my first appointment on Monday, Jan. 18. Waiting room was great! Clean, bright & relaxing. The entire office staff, Dr. Kafayi, Alla, and Trina were very professional. My issue is with scheduling. After initial exam, Dr. Kafayi said I'll need some serious work to treat my gum. So deep cleaning is needed. But Alla scheduled the procedure 2 months from my first appointment! To get my deep cleaning done will take until mid- April. Idk, is it just me? Am I being unreasonable to expect to get my treatment started at least the next few weeks or so. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed the incredible Dr. Kafayi and his illustrious staff in all these years. He was recommended by a new acquaintance at a Nowrūz celebration a few years ago and regardless of where I've lived, I've returned to SF at least every six months. Painless, comfortable, staff who are keenly aware of billing codes so you don't get overcharged by your insurance, and one of the most quaint and relaxing waiting areas ever (Planet Earth DVDs playing, Zen fountain, New and varied magazines, cozy upholstered wing chairs). If you can get in here, you will never find a better dentist. I have kept my same private Delta coverage for years just to stay with these guys and I hope that never changes. Also, the Sutter garage in five doors away and the parking there is $1 an hour before 9 AM. read more

Having DeltaCare USA insurance is accepted but they try to sell you on more services and everything else, they refer you to another dentist that 'specializes' in xrays for evaluation, teeth extraction, etc.. They refused to do annual cleaning unless I do deep cleaning (at extra charge of course). Also, dentist can probably do the other services but doesn't. ie simple tooth extraction (not a molar, etc). Assume it's not worth his time or reimbursement doesn't cover sufficiently. My wife's Delta Dental dentist does everything, unless it truly needs a specialist. Dr seems competent & professional, office clean, staff are friendly and efficient. Do get a receipt if paying cash for copay as was billed for copay after the appt. I could not prove payment, my fault for trusting and thought I was helping them by not having them bill me. Understand reimbursement is a top priority but unless you have the right insurance, pay for recommended services or have a history with this dentist... read more

Had my initial appointment recently. After a short wait, I had X-rays, inspection, cleaning, polishing. The entire process was very efficiently done - these guys run a tight ship, and I was in and out in under an hour. The only con was it took a long time to get that initial appointment - about 5 months for me. But well worth the wait, and probably a one-time annoyance since they scheduled my followup appointment in 6 months. read more

I decided to look for another dentist after Dr Kafayi did a filling on my tooth. Without considering the look of a grey filling (everytime i laugh my boyfriend teases me). He didnt ask or inform me beforehand. Did the filling and i asked why its grey he said thats just how it is. "Too bad" type of attitude. Surprised at the high ratings. I have nothing but good things to say about the professionalism of Kevin and everyone at his office. Efficient, up to date with the technology and I did not have to wait long (other than for my first cleaning which was well within a reasonable timeframe.) He took me in very quickly to repair a filling from another dentist that had fallen out twice and explained to me why a crown was the best alternative. Dr Kafayi, first of all, it doesn't matter how long I was a patient at your office. It was several months as I indicated. At any rate, long enough to not have my teeth cleaned or deep cleaned there. Second, be careful what you say on this forum considering doctor patient confidentiality. You were my dentist and it was your job to fix my cavities and guide my teeth to it's best condition. Insulting me on this forum is displaying your integrity and poor disregard for patients. Third, you are wrong, the insurance company refunded the amount for that problematic cavity that you did AND logged your behavior of terming a patient for what is deemed retaliation. I had 2 dental cleanings at this office and they went ok. What was shocking was that after my 2nd visit to this clinic, I was told to schedule a filling appointment and because I didn't, I was sent a letter stating that I was no longer welcome as a patient in the clinic. I then sent an email asking for my X-Rays and was given 2 screen shots essentially rather than my actual x-ray records. To get kicked out without warning, all because I didn't "follow the dentists recommendations" after only having been there twice and having overall great dental health and 1 minor cavity, is reprehensible. The fact that Dr. Kafayi berates his customers in his review responses here on Yelp is also sad to see. Better dentists out there, if you ask me. read more

The service here is quite fast. On my first visit I filled out the forms and I was seen right away. Wendy was my hygienist and she walked me through everything. I liked that the X-ray images were sent to the screen by me and I could see the images as they were taken. In the past at my other dentist, the hygienist/dentist would disappear for quite a while. I also liked that I could see everyone with their face masks off at some point. read more

The cleaning I got was good, no problem. His office assistants are nice. We also found out that I had a cavity that needed to be filled. The filling process was fine. However, after I came home, I started feeling pain everytime I eat. I came back and Dr. Kafayi thin the filling out and told me to come back if I still have any problems. The pain came back, so I went back to his office. When he looked at my teeth, he said: "I don't understand why you're still complaining about the pain. I don't see what's wrong with your filling". He gave me a numbing shot and of course, after it wore off I felt the pain again. I was tired of coming back to Dr. Kavayi and it didn't sound that he knew what's wrong with my teeth. So I changed my dentist, showed him the problem, and he was able to take care of my persistent pain for good. read more

Dr. Kafayi has not the gentlest hands, but his staff is honest, professional and I haven't walked in or out feeling like he tried to sell me something. Last year he looked at my teeth and said I would benefit from a night guard. It was the first time any dentist had said that! One year later, and my night guard has a hole in one side, and a crack in the other! Guess he was right! The receptionist told me to bring it in and I wouldn't be charged, so they could make sure it wasn't made badly, and if not they'd make sure to refer me to a specialist! These are such difficult times with the Covid pandemic -- and on top of that I somehow had to find a new dentist who has great reviews AND accepts DeltaCare -- which was a big challenge to find in the Bay Area. I was thrilled to find Dr. Kevin Kafayi (his brother is also a dentist!) who is committed to DeltaCare and other forms of insurance (which is so meaningful to me since that is what I get through my Kaiser Medicare supplemental plan). I felt quite safe with their COVID-19 protection protocols in place, even in their relatively small waiting room area. Alla the office manager has been so helpful and generous with information. Trina the assistant is also really friendly. Dr. Kafayi did my exam and cleaning in my first visit and I'm going do my next cleaning with Michelle the dental hygienist who I met and was so nice. Two cleanings, X-rays & annual exam are included with DeltaCare and I'll be paying for a third cleaning each year on my own -- because I'm one of those weird patients who loves going to the dentist and loves getting my teeth cleaned 3 times a year! So I'm willing to pay for that privately at their office. What a relief to find a wonderful dental practice which was so well rated and attentive. (I also love that Dr. Kafayi is a rare practitioner who actually responds to critical Yelp reviews in a highly professional manner. That speaks volumes in my humble opinion.) Dr. Kafayi installed a crown in such a way that I could no longer wear my invisalign retainer. Recently I called his office and left a voicemail message asking to schedule a cleaning but never received a response. After a few weeks I called back and was told that the next available appointment for a cleaning was in April (seven months from now). Dr. Kafayi is an excellent dentist. I have been going to him for 6 years now and he and his crew ( Alla at the front desk keeps everything running smoothly) all know well what they are doing. In the last month, he did a new bridge for me replacing an old one that had come out, one that was 20 years old. Today they put it in and it fit like a glove with maybe 10 minutes of minor adjustment to make it completely perfect. Oh, the color was spot on too. I was eating lunch on it this afternoon and it was like it had always been there. Entirely comfortable. Dr.Kevin Kafayi is a businessman a dental hygienist and an abuser of CAPITATION (Capitation is a payment arrangement for health care service providers. It pays a set amount for each enrolled person assigned to them, per period of time, whether or not that person seeks care) I have been a customer of Mr.Kafayi for almost 10 years. During this time he has not provided any services other than very fast (15 minutes or less) teeth cleaning and exam with an exception of 2 fillings. Beginning this year I had to have a loose tooth extracted. Mr.Kafayi said he does not do extractions and referred me to an oral surgeon. After examining my teeth the oral surgeon recommended to keep the tooth for longer and get a crown on several teeth. I was sent back to Mr.Kafayi who became very angry at the suggestion and said my case is very complicated and referred me to a Prosthodontist. A teaching professor from UCSF examined my mouth and recommended several procedures including extractions, a partial and a complete denture. When I went back to Mr.Kafayi he became furious and said "your insurance does not cover anything other than cleaning" and "there is nothing I can do for you". I had all the procedures done by another dentist in another city. A few weeks later I was in a lot of pain and needed my dentures adjusted. I could not travel due to Covid restrictions and my deteriorating health, so I called Mr.Kafayi and asked for an appointment for adjusting my temporary dentures. I was told to go back to the dentist who started this work. I was angry at the lack of compassion, responsibility and rude attitude when he told me to go to another dentist as there was nothing he could do for me other than teeth cleaning. He simply abandoned me and refused to communicate with me. Now I realize why almost every person who wrote a review about Mr.Kafayi mentions teeth cleaning. The biggest complaint is the scheduling but as greedy Mr.Kafayi is still accepting unsuspecting customers the scheduling problem will remain. If you value your health go to another dentist as Mr.Kafayi is too busy with fast teeth cleaning and has no time for costly and long dental treatments. The best he can do for you is refer you to a "specialist" unless you need treatments such as implants which most insurances do not cover. Unlike Mr.Kafayi I have no reason to lie or benefit from lying.I can repeat everything I wrote here under oath. Mr.Kafayi's practice may be legal but definitely immoral. Please google "capitation". Being a medical professional myself, I know there are individuals with an axe to grind. I discount anonymous gripes, and suspect there are explanations for most. I wish I could give six stars. My dentist of over 15 years retired, and my friend suggested I start seeing Dr. Kafayi. Well, Murphy's law, being between two dentists and my front veneer fell out right before a 2 week trip. I called the office, explained I had never been there and was there any way they could see my urgently. Alla, the very pleasant receptionist, got me in at 8AM before the weekend. I could not believe it!! I saw Dr. Kafayi this morning and his wonderful assistant, Trina. Looking back at the past several months, I want to recognize the very fine work of my dentist Dr. Kevin Kafayi. One reason for me to have had some anxiety was how close my visit was to election day, with so many political campaigns rated as toss ups that either candidate could win. A visit to a dentist was another reason for me to have some anxiety. My worries disappeared when Dr. Kafayi began working on my teeth. Dr. Kafayi has been my dentist for the past 7 years and I've always had excellent service from his team. Alla at the front desk is especially wonderful - she's kind, remembers everyone and goes out of her way to make sure you have a great experience. During my past visit, I had to bring my newborn baby, who didn't make it through without a bit of crying. Dr. Kafayi immediately stopped work several times so I could comfort him. The one star is for the convenient location and the view they have. Dr. Kafayi did a crown work on me last year. In short, I had to redo it with another dentist because I kept having food stuck in it. Didn't I check with him first? Of course I did. I went back to the office after I had really uncomfortable experience with food between my teeth. He looked at it and checked with the floss. He said the contact is good. There is NO PROBLEM. For the moment he said there is no problem, I decided to stop with him. Either he is not capable to figure out an issue that the his patience is complaining on or he simply doesn't care. Even worse, when I left the office, the front desk lady asked me to pay for office visit. It was a follow-up appointment after I paid almost $1,000 plus whatever deal they had with my insurance company. What office visit co-payment are you f... talking about!? Now I learned the issue was bad contact or they say the crown is contacted to the adjacent teeth just at a point. My new dentist did a check up and pointed out that crown right away. I have a few crowns and she pointed out THAT one right away. I promise, I didn't say anything to her also because I wanted to see how much she can tell about my conditions. I did an x-ray and she showed me the shape of the crown. It was not smooth at all. Compared to the other crowns in my mouth, I could tell there is a big space where the crown meets my gum. The x-ray also shows the bone is exposed quite a lot since the food issues. I floss everyday but still it was eating my bone!!! Still I wanted to have a second opinion. I contacted my old dentist in my home town (he is actually my family member so really he has no reason not to be honest) and he also said I should redo it. I went back to Dr. Kafayi's office. I explained the lady at the front desk about my situation and asked what options we have (of course I want my money back!). For that moment I saw Dr. Kafayi moving up and down in the office. The front desk lady was very nervous, almost shaking her hands, and said he is busy now so he cannot see me. I thought, 'well, okay. She is blocking me?' But she could be right. Even if I saw him just now, it is possible he was moving from a patient to another. She asked what was the issue. I said I kept having food stuck in it. Then she said "Ah, so it was bad contact?" And she said very CYNICALLY and SARCASTICALLY "Did your new dentist promise they will make PERFECT contact?" I had no words. Really. She said she will talk with Dr. Kafayi and contact me. I wanted a second opinion and found Dr. Kafayi. He told me there was NO problem whatsoever and he didn't see any cavities. Fast forward five years and there are STILL no problems. Though Dr. kafayi is a competent dentist, and finding a good one in the city can sometimes present a challenge, this review is for their customer service. Having been in between insurance carriers recently due to either jobs changes or other unforeseen circumstances, I have had to cancel my scheduled appointments because i am not über wealthy and cannot afford to pay out of pocket for dental care. I recently had to reschedule a routine cleaning and that was done via the reception with no issues. Then i received a letter saying that Dr, Kafayi wants to drop me as a patient because i have cancelled frequently (again due to lack of insurance and saying I did not give enough notice.) i have always given at at least 24 hours notice.They have an email confirmation system which i responded to and explained the situation. apparently this email correspondence does not work. So after reading the letter Dr. Kafayi said he would prefer I find another dentist. And i received this letter once i had my insurance renewed. So needless to say this left a a bad vibe with me and i will be pursuing another dental office who is not so quick to drop a patient just because they have to fight the red tape and bureaucracy of dental insurance. I thought Dr. Kafayi was different but alas it seems this office cares more about making sure they are paid (and there is nothing wrong with that but once one's insurance plan is reactivated why be so quick to drop a long term patient) I suppose money trumps than patient care sadly these days. read more

It's absence that makes the teeth grow fungus, and the heart fonder indeed. I haven't had health insurance since September and now I actually miss my dentist. I think everyone that's ever known me has just put their hand to my head to feel for a fever. FACT: I hate the dentist. BUT I actually really really like Dr. Kafayi and the lovely woman who runs the front desk who *has the memory of 3 elephants* seriously I don't know what kind of vitamins she is smoking but she seems to remember every patient, every time, even though we only come twice a year!??!! freaky amazing. I can't even remember her name. There's only one of her. That I know of. Dr. Kafayi is very gentle, soft spoken, and mild mannered, which are SUPER bad qualities in a date but exactly what I like for someone applying electrical devices to my delicate teeth and gums, which happen to be attached to my hyper nervous panic-ey dentist brain. Yes, I get "dentist brain". It's similar to pregnancy brain but more fear based, or sex brain but again, more fear based. Anyhoo, if I can like a dentist, you'll probably love them. Go here and never look back. Unless you can afford that super expensive new age dentist in the east bay I hear tales of, where they massage your feet and use lots of happy drugs.
