Carols Alterations

I guess I didn't realize just how much there is within walking distance of where we live! Mr…read more Snarky showed me a pair of his trousers and at the bottom he had ripped the hem. Since I don't have the equipment to fix the hem, I figured I would try to find a tailor that could fix it. Besides, you never know when you might need a tailor. I found Carols Express Alterations on Yelp, but it didn't have any reviews. I figured since it was about a 15 minute walk on a lovely, sunny day, to give it a go. I nearly walked right by the place and had no clue there was a tailor there! When I walked in it was quite busy with a small queue. There are a couple of sewing machines in the window, with the counter and till to the left. On the day that I dropped the trousers off, there was only one person at the counter. Along with tailoring, they also offer ironing and laundry services. I was asked when I wanted to pick up the trousers and it turns out with easy repairs they can do them same day, but I was in no hurry so I just asked for a few days later. They give you a ticket (don't lose it because they don't put names on them) and you pay when you pick up. I had thought about picking up the trousers on my way to pick up Mr. Snarky at the train station, however, there isn't much for parking. There is a pay-and-display across the street, but I find it is usually full during the day. So I just walked back up and when I walked in, there were two staff, this time no queue. One of the staff was working at one of the sewing machines, while the other took my ticket and went in search of the trousers. Alterations for trousers was £3, which is less than what I would have spent getting the supplies to repair the hem myself, not to mention they probably did a better job than I could have done. The hem was repaired quite nicely and it looks like they used a sturdier thread than what was previously used (I compared it with the hem on the other leg). Overall, really happy with the job they did, it was very fast, convenient, and affordable! I am considering taking my wedding dress from earlier this year and having some alterations made for the wedding and reception in the U.S. next year.

If you need…read moreanything altering please take my advice and take it to the electricians next door, they would do a much better job and I'm sure you will receive a much warmer welcome and far friendlier service! I Asked these amateurs to sew a badge on a blazer for me, simple right? That's what I thought. They quoted me £30 which I thought was expensive but was prepared to pay for a good job as it was an expensive jacket and a very rare badge. When I went to collect the blazer, the badge was absolutely ruined!! They had damaged the gold braiding around the perimeter of the badge. Obviously done by the machine they had chucked it through! At the price they was charging sewn on by hand didn't seem to much to ask. This was not just any old badge it was a vintage Cunard crest badge which had never been taken out of the packaging and that had taken me two years to track down. When I challenged them about the damage they denied they had caused it, even though I produced a picture I had taken the morning I'd taken the jacket to them to see what it looked like. I asked to see the manager and I was absolutely gob smacked to say the least to find that the person who was dealing with me so poorly was the owner..... she had the attitude of a sixteen year old school leaver on work experience, the only thing missing was the chewing gum. Her customer service was absolutely disgusting at best. I'm sure the owner will come back to this review with some sort of smarmy reply judging by the other bad reviews she's responded to but I'm not prepared getting into tit for tat I just wanted to warn others from experiencing the same as me. There are far better shops you can choose and much more reasonably priced as I found out to my cost. I'm amazed shops like this even exist. I wouldn't ask them to repair a hole in my tea towel.

The men's clothing store had been in the village for a good long while and it should jolly well stay, especially as all these bally WAGS keep being bought boutiques here to run into the ground. Obviously the people making these sorts of remarks didn't really concern themselves with actually shopping at Byrne & Sons, and why would they? It was very expensive for what it was. "£55 for an argyle cardigan? I could get one half that price at the Edinburgh Wool Mill!" Still they were adamant that it shouldn't leave Formby, it was an institution. Imagine their joy then when it moved to new, even bigger (and cheaper) digs opposite the Grapes pub. Hooray. It still didn't mean that anyone really went. "£20 for a tie? Good heavens no, I could get three for that price at Tie Rack!"
