What's been said in the other reviews is all true, of course. But what I love about this place is the incredibly relaxed atmosphere, the way they completely appreciate the post-work wind down, and lubricate it with generous glasses of wine every time you go. Don't expect to purchase anything in under an hour, but why would you want to? Try it all - there's not a bad bottle in here.

A good selection of wine on the right hand side, some nice pieces of art on the walls, a couple of fridges at the back of the shop, and the mandatory bare plaster walls of all tasteful places in Hamburg. Understated and classic. And then to the wine. All of the bottles are arranged with hand written descriptions, a good selection of most grape varieties, and pricing to suit everyone's requirements. 5EUR bottles through to 20EUR bottles. If you're in need of some sound advice then stroll over to the counter and ask the chap who runs this place. Very friendly, excellent English, and a very good English vocabulary when it comes to wine. There is no snobbery here - whatever you're willing to spend he will give excellent plain sense recommendations. They also have a few other delicacies other than wine; hare paté was one I indulged in recently. If you become a regular visitor you'll also notice there are quite often a few people standing around drinking a bottle and chatting to the chap. This shop isn't just about grabbing your booze and then slumping in front of a DVD. My more romantic side likes to think it's about harking back to the diminishing culture of enjoying the finer things in life and doing it with some style. Anyway, I noticed it yesterday, and realised that they sell all manner of drinks. I was interested in whether they might sell English real ales, so I went in to investigate. The answer, sadly, is no they don't, but they do sell Augustiner in crates! Hurrah! They also have a very extensive range of spirits and soft drinks. The best thing though is that they deliver! I've yet to test out the service, but if they're willing to carry a crate of Augustiners up the 5 floors to my apartment I'll give them 5 stars :) - Update: so when I was in the other day I quizzed them about the delivery service. 1 Augustiner costs 1.20. A crate of 20 costs 19.99 and to have the crate delivered it'll cost a further 3. A bargin if you live no-where near the shop, on the 5th floor and have no car...

I've wanted to pop in here for ages,…read moreand, with my nearest and dearest coming to Hamburg tonight I had the perfect excuse to stock up some decent wine. It turns out it's an Italian specialist shop - run by an affable chap (perhaps Herr Rossi - I didn't ask!) who is an expert on all things wine. Which is good, as this is what I came for. I thought I might pick up just a few bottles of white, but came out with a mixed case and some Italian 'Champagne' too! I'll update you all when the chilling is complete, but suffice to say this was a great wine purchasing adventure!

The concept works well. The crew all speak English and are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. So far, I've investigated some of the more esoteric of German Craft Beers and the journey has been rewarding. I'd like to see BB extend their opening hours, I often arrive after 2000 to find them closed. I believe that there are plans to do so. Beyond Beer faces a big challenge, they have a very successful, first to market, competitor down the road, and that competitor has the advantage of a huge on-site brew pub and restaurant operation that brings massive footfall. If Beyond Beer hope to survive they have to find a way of getting people through the door. I hope that they succeed!

The range is extensive & no doubt as its fame grows more brewers will be looking to have their products stocked (space could well become an issue then). The one thing that could be tightened up on is labelling of UK & Irish brands as Brew Dog and at least one other were shown as ENG when they should have been SCO & IRL.
