Checking out was quick & easy.. The hotel is in Medora North Dakota in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Theodore is the restaurant on premises. The hotel & our room have a rustic charm. In the lobby is an immense hearth reaching to the tin-tiled ceiling, with walls housing a large, private & accessible library of books on, and by, Theodore. We were able to walk around the shops & restaurants in Medora & we were in the park in minutes. We were told animals run wild here. There was a 12 car parking lot & we never got a spot so we parked around the corner on the street. Sarah and the volunteers from Thailand were helpful and friendly. I was surprised that there wasn't housekeeping services, I went down to the desk for clean towels, a laundry bag & took out our garbage. Went down again, for tissues & toilet paper. There was no breakfast served here. There were soda and candy vending machines. I was surprised that there was carpeting in our room and all over the hotel. I was a little grossed out coming inside with my muddy dirty shoes. At home, I would've left them at the door; here I just don't want to touch the carpeting. The fitness room is not a priority, the elliptical worked poorly.

Unfortunately, our stay was disappointing, especially for a hotel charging over $300 per night…read more I was traveling alone with my two young children, and when we arrived, they were exhausted and falling asleep in the lobby. I asked about an early check-in, and although our room was already cleaned and ready, there was no flexibility in allowing us to check in early. I understand hotels have policies, but given the circumstances--and the fact that it was literally 100 degrees outside--a little consideration would have gone a long way. We also did not receive housekeeping during our stay, which was unexpected given the price point. My biggest frustration, though, has been with items I accidentally left behind in a drawer after checkout. I contacted the hotel hoping to have them returned, but more than a month later, they are still "looking" for them. I even had a co-worker stop by the hotel in person to pick them up, but unfortunately, the staff would not look for the items while she was there. I completely understand that leaving my belongings behind was my mistake. However, I had hoped for more effort and responsiveness in helping me recover them. Overall, it was the lack of flexibility and follow-through that made the experience so disappointing. On a positive note, everything else about our time in Medora was five stars. We loved the Library, the Musical, our trail ride, and the town itself. We had a wonderful time in Medora overall--I just wish our hotel experience had matched the rest of our trip.

Not just a clever name!…read more Listen, it is not the worst place in the world. And they gave us a coupon for a two for one drink (they probably hoped we would get wasted before seeing our room, in retro I wish I had also). And that is the friendliest thing I can say. ° The mattresses are lopsided, loud, some springs are definitely retired. ° The previous guests, the flies, were still staying in the room when we arrived. ° Desk service was apathetic and non-responsive (could stand to be replaced by one of the energetic flies). ° There is WiFi like advertised. Just don't plan on using it. It disconnected every other minute and when it stayed connected it moved at the same speed that a mannequin runs a race. Hardly hyperbole. ° Like curtains? Like peekaboo? Great. This place is a good mix for you. Plenty of moths have eaten holes through the window covers. ° Paper thin walls. I'll just give them this one. It's an old building. Who cares? But that other stuff pretty well sucks and can be fixed.

The hotel is owned and operated by the creator of the sculptures himself. We chatted with him on multiple occasions throughout our stay and he made us feel right at home. We've driven across the country multiple times per year for years and have never encountered a place with as unique a vision as his - definitely stop through if you're even remotely in the area. It's not a luxury hotel, but for being in an old converted high school it's certainly spacious and comfortable. Now on to the various unique highlights - The castle theme is really cool and the food in the tavern and Excalibur steakhouse is quite good (great steaks and soup!). There's a gas fire pit outside near the entrance that they'll turn on if you ask. On our first night we met a couple guys who were traveling the country on their motorcycles and we shared drinks and great conversation by the fire. There's a whole gymnasium available for basketball, which we availed ourselves to. It's not every day you can just run free in an abandoned high school gym! They have two hot tubs in a room through the gym that are nice - I'd recommend bringing some music and turning off the lights for an eerie and relaxing experience. Gary sets up breakfast himself in the morning, and is around to chat and help with anything you might need. Definitely try to call before you arrive - they open at 5pm and have a small staff there working throughout the day so there's not always someone by the front office to talk to. We had to call a couple times but once we talked to someone we were assured they'd have space. The rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable. Gary was working on two new sculptures right by the castle entrance throughout our stay - an enormous knight and a soon-to-be firebreathing dragon. This is a one-of-a-kind slice of Americana and a vision we felt good supporting. We wish Gary and the town of Regent all the best and will definitely return next time we're in North Dakota.

A cool nights rest on our journey through North Dakota…read more There's not a lot of staff, so no one was at the front desk to check us in. Instead, we had a phone number to call and have someone stop by the front desk to get us checked in. The room is nice. There's even a little "kitchen" area. I liked the knight accents, but felt like it needed a little more. My favorite part was the gymnasium, where you could throw some basketballs around. If you are looking for food, go down the street. They shouldn't even be serving food with the quality I received. I ordered the fish basket, and I'm not sure if it was the breading or the fish, but it tasted completely of mold and I couldn't eat it. My sister had the prime rib, which was completely raw on the inside, and a lot of it was fat. Her corn was hard and cold and just gross. I don't know why we had any hope for the dessert, but we ordered the raspberry cheesecake, and it was disgusting. First, it wasn't even cold, and second, it was hard. Do not eat here. And the service is so slow. I get it, it's a small town, but two hours for a meal is way too long. All in all, the room was nice, but save your money and eat at the other restaurant down the road.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel with our little girl dog (one dog, up to 50 lbs, is allowed to stay per room and cost $75 per stay) for two nights. We did utilize the stove and cooked most of our meals (please note that there is free breakfast provided at this hotel). There are pots and pans made available. There was only a set of 3 plates, bowls and glass cups and mugs. Inside the shower, there is shower gel, shampoo and conditioner on the wall, which I always appreciate.
