Courtyard by Marriott - hotel lobby sitting area
    Leonard E.

This Markham hotel is located on Woodbine Ave just north of Steeles Ave E.  I dub it the Owl neighbourhood because of the Firkin Pub patio a hundred metres away.  It is rated Accessible and not Pet-friendly. Front desk staff are professional; be nice at a minimum and you'll get that in return.  This is my second visit to this building which is jointly a TownePlace Suites as well. I'm only here to visit three guests staying in separate rooms with kitchenettes. I can't speak first-hand of the experience.  Just keeping my social distance with the COVID-19 situation and the safety of all. Courtyard by Marriott has parking, breakfast and WiFi for guests. Many amenities like the bar, restaurant, fitness centre, swimming pool + spa may not be fully opened due to COVID-19 restrictions so check first with front desk staff. Venture outside and you can experience the famous Metro Square a few kilometers east or the Bayview Golf and Country Club westward. Fore!

3.5 stars We come to the Toronto/GTA area pretty frequently, and being Marriott rewards card holders, we are always curious to see how different hotel locations adapt to industry trends. During our recent trip to Toronto, I became excited to see that this new Courtyard location was open. In fact, I didn't even know that there was a new opening in the works! Thumbing through the numerous photos, I thought the new branding that Marriott is implementing in their hotels (specifically Courtyard) looked great. That's the reason why we decided to book our stay here..purely on aesthetics. I want to mention that this hotel used to be a Holiday Inn, and while they did a great job on the finishings and colors of the hotel, it still screamed Holiday Inn to us. Parking was awkward, as it was next to a small business area, forcing the only solution to be 1 long row of parking spaces along the perimeter of the lot. In an attempt to add more parking spaces, they have a covered garage as well. Be prepared to pay $4 CAD for it. Not a lot of money, but for being outside of the city, not what most would expect. Oh, and if you have a high profile truck, don't bring it along with you, as the height limit is 6'. Inside, the lobby is large and spacious. Plenty of room for lounging, and for computer usage. Elevators flank the south end of the hotel, and they have implemented the usage of your room key to activate the elevator. So, make sure you keep it on yourself the entire time, or you will not be able to use the elevator. Hallways were fine, and rooms had nice heavy doors. Beds were more comfortable than other Courtyards, and the colors were warm, inviting, and relaxing. If you have a lot of luggage, there is plenty of storage inside the room with 2 closets and multiple dressers. Washroom was alright, but surprisingly, water pressure wasn't good. I did see a notice on the door that they were making arrangements to improve that, so I bet that isn't a problem anymore. I wanna say that what brought this experience up an additional half star is that the front desk staff was super friendly, hospitable, helpful, and informative. Other than that, the rooms and overall condition of the hotel were just average. We paid $94 CAD for one night, and felt that it was priced decently. I might come back, but it's definitely not my first choice.

It doesn't look like this anymore.

It's spacious and clean, 2 TVs and plenty of sofa seatings. We had a comfortable 6 nights stay while visiting from NY. Plenty of parkings on site (with fee) and very convenient location for us considered our visit mostly for Asian food/eats. We will absolutely stay here again on our next 'food trip'!

We checked out a few other venues, but non-hotels didn't provide the convenience that we wanted and some of the other hotels didn't look quite as good. Location wise, it was perfect. It sits right beside the 407, which was amazing for our out-of-town guests. It's also on Hwy 7 and Warden, which is good for local guests. The wedding probably couldn't have gone much better than it did, outside of the things that our Wedding Planner dealt with. Staff were extremely nice. One of our wedding party guests had a very restrictive diet at the time, so she couldn't have anything on the menu, but one of the staff managed to get her something. They brought out food in a very timely manner and everything we ate, and tasted the year prior, was great! We had a minor mishap where we couldn't find the rest of our wedding cake, but they found it late at night. There are also plenty of placed to take photos - the stairs in the lobby, the outdoor garden, and the rooms themselves. I know some parties like to use the area across the street too since it's mostly an open field, as long as there's no Canadian Geese. The room we had was also very nice, and they were able to set accommodations for us to stay an extra night too. All our guests that wanted to stay were able to also book rooms there at a small discount. Rooms were well kept and comfy. Parking was included with our group. Overall, a great place to go for both a room to stay, and an event for your loved ones.

They do have complimentary coffee, hot water, and tea bags near the front desk; this was a welcomed addition as a snow storm hit during my stay. The small fridge and microwave does come in handy if you are staying a few days. The room was pretty clean and spacious, but the curtains don't close all the way; I normally wouldn't care, but my room was on the second floor and people outside can easily look right into your room. Another annoyance is that it can be difficult to find parking in the evening as the lot isn't that large and spaces in the front are partially taken up by the hotel next door. I like the look of the large glass walls of the shower, but there is a huge design flaw as the swinging door collects splashes and the water starts to leak out onto the bathroom floor. They do provide a towel on the door, so I guess they are aware of this issue. Overall, I did enjoy my stay. The drawbacks weren't serious, and the friendliness of the staff were top notch. I wouldn't mind staying here again in the future.

When I pulled up the the building, I thought they rebranded it as I sworn I've stayed here under a different Marriot brand. I pulled into the back parking lot which you have to register and pay for if you're a guest. There is a parking station out back but don't use that as it's way cheaper staying as a hotel guest. At front desk, they had a pretty decent sized lineup but they got through it pretty quickly. They asked if I checked in and I let them know when they were under a different name. They told me they actually have 2 hotels here which is confusing but confirmed that I had stayed here before. Front desk staff were really nice to me. They let me know that breakfast is included. I headed to my room and got settled. The room I had was pretty bright from all the natural light. The room has a tv, desk and a fridge. The washroom looked decent but later found out that the shower/drain was a bit finicky. The bed was decent. I tried the breakfast. It's super basic and it's OK at best but I do like that they have a few fruit options as well as yogurt. There's hot items and all things you'd find at a continental breakfast. Coffee is passable. I never checked out the amenities so can't really comment on them,

The room was quite spacious for a king with sofa, but you can hear the vehicle traffic all night. The black out curtains sort of did the job, the air conditioning is loud. And you can hear the refrigerator. If you're a sensitive sleeper this may not be for you. Also throughout the night can hear someone above- but I thought I was top floor??? Level of cleanliness was moderate, you can see some visible dirty sports. For the price points at $300 and change after tax, it was a bit steep. The rate came with a free basic and ok self-serve breakfast also. The hotel was totally booked during our 3 night stay and most of the patrons were ethnically diverse as is the Markham area in general. Parking is plentiful and free. But the hotel is not perfect. Because we drove here, I was able to bring my own down pillow for a change and from what I saw of the bouncy polyester pillows, that was a personal good call and I slept well. Wife thought the pillows were adequate for her though. The heating was nice and quiet and that's a plus. On the downside, the toilet seat was quite small and squat (short height) making its use awkward. Even our cruise ship toilets never evoked such a reaction from us. It's almost a show-stopper but tolerable for a few days. Staff was friendly and courteous. On the last night, one young lady staffer in fact also did a good job for me by getting an annoying guy next door to turn his TV down at midnight. The Canadian law is almost identical to the American law in that there is no certification or documentation that is standard or required, some doctors provide it based on the type of dog you have, if it's for a severe medical condition. I tried to explain this to the man at the front desk, he then told me that I had to provide it and that because they are a private establishment, he could refuse me. I explained to him that because they are a business open to the public, what he said is not true. He then brought out a memo that said three things, either they need to have a visible disability, two, needed to provide a service dog card if they had one, or three if they had a non-visible disability, they needed to explain that the dog is task trained, and the dog needs to be under control at all times. He thought it had to be all three, not one of the three. I tried to explain that to him and he told me I was wrong. Then, when I explained my dog was trained in the US and many trainers don't provide that, not to mention some Canadian trainers don't and that owner trained service dogs (which would then not have a trainer certification) are acceptable in Canada, he said that the Canadian law didn't apply to me, because I'm not Canadian. I asked him if laws applied to people in Canada, and he said yes, but not to me because I'm American. I then asked to speak to the manager, who apologized and explained that they do ask for documentation, though it's not required. She just asked that I check in with the dog, though the manager who checked me in saw Biscuit. I literally got told today by someone who doesn't understand the law, that the law they didn't know existed couldn't apply to me, and he was exceptionally nasty about it.

Vacated mid-stay due to a plumbing emergency. Room 414 (Apr 27) -- First replacement. Significantly smaller, double queens, none of the original amenities. Room 201 (Apr 27-29) -- Second replacement. King bed but smaller, no kitchenette, no tub. Suffered a second plumbing failure on Apr 28 and sewage odor Apr 28-29. Room 204 (Apr 28) -- Temporary room provided solely so I could access a working shower. Room 212 (Apr 29) -- Staff physically unlocked this room for me to shower. When I returned, the door had been shut. Staff re-opened it -- and we discovered it was occupied. A female guest was in the process of changing. Hotel staff had twice granted me access to another paying guest's room. Room 203 (Apr 29) -- Final alternative after the Room 212 incident. Had the same sewage odor. Completely unusable. What went wrong: The lobby and pool were under active renovation my entire stay. I wasn't told until one day before arrival, despite booking months in advance. Had I known, I would have stayed elsewhere. The hotel's solution was to bus guests to a nearby Sheraton for pool access -- not acceptable. One elevator was out of service for an extended period. I have a medical condition affecting my knees. Repeatedly climbing multiple flights of stairs was a genuine physical hardship. Renovation appliances including microwaves were stored in the hallways throughout my stay -- a safety hazard and well below any brand standard. On April 27, I was forced to vacate my original suite mid-stay due to a plumbing emergency. Every replacement room offered was a downgrade. At no point was I given a room that matched what I had booked and paid for. Room 201 was placed directly above the active pool construction. On April 28 -- my birthday, the entire reason for this trip -- I was woken at 8:20 AM by loud drilling. Later that same morning, the hotel called to inform me that Room 201's shower, sink, and toilet would be out from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Nearly nine hours without basic water access. Upon returning to the room that evening, there was a sewage smell coming from the bathroom. It was still there the next morning. The Room 212 incident is the most serious failure of this entire stay. Staff directed me to and physically unlocked an occupied guest room -- not once, but twice. This is an egregious breach of guest privacy and safety that should never have been possible under any operational circumstance. When I raised the issue of my 60,000 IHG points used for my April 23-25 reservation, the property manager told me she did not have the authority to process a points refund and directed me to contact IHG corporate. I did exactly that -- and IHG corporate confirmed that she does have that authority. She had the ability to resolve this at the property level and instead chose to send me on a deliberate runaround. That is not a miscommunication. That is a manager using a false claim to avoid accountability. The hotel offered a partial refund of $147.70 against an original charge of $606.92 -- and only before the most serious incidents had even occurred. IHG denied my formal points refund request.
