The B&B consists of two suites. I'm in the Federal Suite which includes a bedroom/bath, parlour, dining room, and a kitchen. It's almost bigger than my apartment! In addition to all the comforts of home (plus a homemade breakfast made to order), the B&B comes with Jeanette, a self-described "Innkeeper/Grandma." Jeanette is an incredibly sweet woman who loves her B&B and makes her customers feel very much at home. She even called me after the first day of the bar exam to see how I was doing! This place is great! I don't know if I'll ever come back to Jeff City, but if I do, I'll stay here.

Is it a down-market hotel that doesn't provide competitive amenities like a complementary breakfast and in-room microwave? Or, is it a full service hotel providing good value and downtown convenience? Or, something else? The normal rate for our room was around $125/night. That's Hampton and Fairfield Inn territory but considerably less than a downtown convention hotel. Capitol Plaza shows some age. Our room lacked convenient electrical outlets to accommodate multiple device chargers. Lamps appeared decades old. Our toilet on the 9th floor eventually emptied but was slow. Counter colors didn't quite match popular contemporary hues, and chips and cigarette burns marred counter edges. However, staff were accommodating and helpful., Furniture wasn't worn. Paint, wallpaper, carpeting, and tile grout had been replaced, evidencing some renovations. We received vouchers for a free breakfast. I was told the breakfast was usually $12.87-expensive for the few buffet items offered. There was no menu table service. Hot breakfast items included scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits with gravy, and potatoes, plus fresh fruit and drinks. All that is included, plus more, in the Hampton or Fairfield Inn room price.

Closed in the 80's it was brought back to life by the State and now serves as meeting facilities and office space. My parents both served in WWII in the South Pacific. My mom was an Army Nurse and Dad a Sargent. They knew each other as kids in St. Louis and met again in the Philippines. After returning from the war, they married in South City and drove on honeymoon to the Elms outside of Kansas City. Due to old 2 lane roads, they only made it to Jefferson City the first night and stayed at the Governor. Today when I attend meetings at the Governor, I think back to what it was like in the 1940s. The art deco lobby, staircase handrails and 2nd floor ballroom provide just enough insight that this place was lots of fun. Filled with lots of history, the State did a great job keeping this place alive and repurposing it to a new use.

This was a very unplanned stay after Amtrak completely laid an egg during our bikepacking trip and we were unable to keep our original destination, we pivoted our way into Jeff City. Location wise, this was an easy ride from the train station, and near their downtown that has some good restaurants. You have to cross a highway which by bike isn't ideal, but just use the crosswalk and you're good to go. The beds were surprisingly comfortable, and worn out from a seven hour train delay, I was out like a light. Only issue was the bath worked, but the switch to push the water into the shower head was out. Diamond got us into the room next door so we could get showers, and then a tech was out early the next morning to fix it. Together, they were friendly and helpful. Would I stay here again? I don't know. We sorta just had to make a cheap reservation to save our trip, and didn't do any research, just moved on it. But it certainly was A-OK and I'd consider it if and when Amtrak holds us in a corn field for another seven hours and we end up here!

I asked the hotel manager for a refund the next day since I had been kicked out even though I prepaid. He wouldn't refund my money. I got the feeling this was not the first time he had pulled this. I believe this was a scam. *Note: I do not know exactly when the payment went through. I took his word for it when he said Booking.com had not processed it, but payment was complete when I checked after I was kicked out and found a different hotel. I called him again the following day, and he said it was Booking.com's problem, not his. I would avoid this place if possible.
